DESTRUCTION or BAGGAGE.—It is annoying
to persons traveling by railroad to witness the
rough handling of trunks, etc., received by
baggage masters and other 'ernployees' , nbout,
the depots. We have seen new and - epensive
ranks "pitched in," thrown‘beinaind piled

dollars. If you object to your baggage being
thus roughly handled, you will be very likely
to have to take the impudence of such fellows
also. If there was a way to reach such scamps,
it would •be well for the traveling— publielto

GLoruous NEWS ! —Rain commenced falling
this forenoon and continued several hours.--
From present indications we nye led to believe
that ther'e is . "more of the same sort" to come.
It is badly needed--let it come !
OUR farmers have had splendid weather the
past week for making hay. The grass was
'very heavy and the hay is of a particularly
excellent quality. We have not heard , much
complaint of want of hands, although help is
scarce. The many improvements in farm ma
chinery, the past few years, enable farmers
to get through with their work with much
fewer hands than formerly.
The wheat is ripening very fast, and will be
fit to cut in a few days. The heads are well
filled, and the yield in this region we
think, be above the average of other years.

A 'RICH: SCENZ'Aer iCSOIT.OOL EXAMINATION.
A correspondent writing to us from Mechan
icsburg, gives a long description of the gradu-'
atop ceremonies in the young ladies' Semi- ,
nary; in. that village. • 'We are sorry that - we;
cannot publish the entire letter, but we have
only room fora reference to a rich scene which:
occurred during the proceedings. It appears
that among the scholars there, was a young
lady who is perfectly irrepressible in seces-'
sion tendencies and aiowals. This "fair dam- .
- ser hafkoonceived a terrible loathing for that
abolition rag, the Stars and Stripes, declaring
that if it were brought to her while she was on
the platform delivering her composition she,
would trample it beneath her dainty feet. As'
she finished her reading, an individual in the au
dience presented her with a beautiful boghet,.
in which was planted a miniature specituen l
of our sacred national emblem. The young
ladies presentAtuderstoed Why this was. pre-,
sented, and breathlessly awaited the result.,
But the blooraing,, saucy, little tory, filled as
she was With Verdigris and secession impu
rity, blushed with conscious guilt as she
gazed on the of her bleeding country, and
hesitated even• to frown omits brilliant folds
and gorgeous colors. May she repent of her,
foolish declaration to trample on a flag which
is the security of all she can hold dear as
an American maiden, and live to become the
mother Of-a; iquad' of patriots and sturdy de
fenders of that flag and this country!
