DELEGATE Rtverrox IN THE THIRD WARD.- The election in the Third ward will be held at the public house of Jacob D. Hoffman, in Wal nut street, on Saturday evening next. RArs.—Within the past twenty-four hours we have had several showers of rain, which, no doubt, were gratefully received by the farmers, as vegetation will now shoot forth with renewed vigor. I=l=l A RARE CHANCE. —The well selected stock of J. Kahnweiler's dry goods store, corner o Sbconcl and Walnut streets, is now offered for sale to any person Wishing the entire stock.— It will be sold on the most reasonable terms. my 11-2t* I=l=l SICK. AND WOUNDED PENNSYLVANIA VOLTlN TErits.—lnformation respecting Pennsylvania soldiers in the hospitals of Philadelphia, may always be had by application to Jos. Parker, Chief of the Hospital Commission, at the rooms of the Young Men's Christian Associa tion, No. 1011 Chestnut street. MEC= THE Harrisburg branch of the Christian Commission urgently call for contributions, in view of the fearful destruction of the past few days, in the Army of the Potomac.' Let not our wounded heroes be forgotten. Contributions may be sent to R. A. Lam berton, treasurer. DIEM; is a fine programme for to-night's entertainment at Hitchcock's National Hall. The new company attracts large audiences, and the 'plays, songs,_dances, &c., are pre sented in fine style. Mr. Hall, the stage man ager, has an eye to pleasing the public, and thus far has succeeded admirably. Go to the National, and drive the blues away. LET THERE BE LIGHT. —A. number of persons who are compelled to go home Fria Third street, late at night, have requested us to call the attention of the city authorities to the fact that there a no lamps along the above street, between Walnut and North. Measures should be taken at once to accommodate those of our citizens who frequent that portion of the town. I=l= DISTRESSMG ACCEDET.—On Monday hist, as a boy; aged nine years, sou of Henry Shettrer, of Orrstown, was returning from mill with a. two-horse wagon, the horses became fright ened, and the boy was thrown in front of the wagon, the wheels of which passed over him, breaking both arms, and injuring him inter nally to such a degree that he died on Monday. lel=l THERE, is scarcely anything occurring here worthy of note, the war news absorbing the attention of our citizens generally. Conse quently it is exceedingly difficult to present, in this department of our paper, the usual variety of local news, and we give up as much space as possible to the reports from the seat of war. SINFORD ' S TROIIPE.-If good singing is at tractive then you can find it at Sanford's Op era House. The first part of the performance introduces fen male and female performers, giving the best vocal music that has ever been presented by any minstrel troupe that has visited this city—after which an olio of songs, dances, &c.; also the EXEMPTS, by three ladies and three gentlemen—concluding with San ford's Bone Squash. As M.r. S. is proprietciri of this opera and the only man who performs it, you can have no better opportunity than to see him to-night. I==l A Box of such articles as wounded soldiers require, is about to be made np here by the Ladies' Union Relief Association. Presum ing that all members will desire to contribute, they can do so by sending such 'articles as will carry safely, to the house of John H. Briggs, 'Esq., so that they may be packed to morrow. At this season it is well known that nobody has a large supply on hand, but one cup of jelly or one can of tomatoes or pickles from each person, or some dried rusk, sugar, lemons, tamarinds, Vic., will soon fill a box. Let us do what we can. M. S. BEATTY, - Pres't 11. R. A. Harrisburg, May 12th, 1864. MOH AVPHECIATION OF A. WOIRiDED SOLD= BY THE COUANDANT AT THIS POST.—We: were called on this morning by a highly in telligent young man, who had lost an arm in the struggle to crush the slaveholders' rebel lion. It seems that he had been induced. to leave a temporary situation in Mile delphi a?and was encouraged to come to Harrisburg, with the intimation that he could get employment in the office of Colonel Bamford. He ac cordingly made application to that officer for a clerkship, his papers recommending him being of the best ever put on file for a similar purpose; but his application was rejected, and a civilian appointed in his stead, who had never seen a day's service in the army. We make this statement entirely on the represent ation of the soldier thus shabbily treated. The whole transaction is very Itomfordieh, and is another fact added to the already accu mulated evidence in favor of a change of com manders at this post. The wounded menof the army are entitled to all places in the mili tary service; of a clerical character. 'T. fey, should be preferred, at least, when making application for such places, to civilian appli cants. Tux, Lanams OF HAHRISBURG would do well . - • to call and etintim the fresh iapply •of Mil linery and Straw goods just received by Mrs. J. Hibbs', No. 8 Market Square, next door to Felix's confectionery. They are of the latest styles and best quality ; and will be sold at low prices. d3t I=3=ll THE only topic of conversation in our city is the great struggle now progressing in Vir ginia. Our office is continually besieged by crowds of individuals in search of news. The extras issued are greedily '=gobbled" up, and hurriedly perused. Even the midnight hour witnesses the inquiry, "What is the latest ?" 'Riose who have friends in the gallant army of the Union are doubly anxious to hear the news, and sleepless nights are passed in anx iety in regard to those brave men who are facing the death-dealing missiles of the ene my. When the list of the slain is made pub lic, thousands of wives and children, who are now in suspense, will mourn the loss of hus bands and fathers, - who have fallen in the field of battle. The instigator's of this wicked re bellion will have to atone for the murder of the loyal hosts whose lives have been and will be lost, and the wails of countless _widows and orphans will_ cry for vengeance! There is a terrible end in store for the rebels in the North as well as the South. A FIGHTING REPORTER.—The Philadelphia North American, of yesterday, contained the following concerning one of its reporters : A former attache of the North American, Mr. John E. Norcross, was drafted in the first Congressional district. He jammed the points of his steel pen into his table, threw his ink stand at a cat upon the shed, and instantly reported himself for duty. He was the first white conscript in the district to do so. Asa Utember of Col. Thomas' regiment, he had twice gone to the frontier. He read of the lasi invasion while in Parii. He packed up his 'wardrobe, consisting of a pair of drawers and three dickeys, and returned by the fast steamer to Philadelphia. He joined his regi ment at Carlisle. He did his duty as adju tant's clerk in the camp for drafted men, and is now appointed a lieutenant in the 25th S. colored troops. • He will leave to-morrow for New Orleans. , Bolorrirs.—The May magazines give the following descriptions of Spring bonnets.— Upon reading them we suppose the ladies un derstand what they . mean—we don't. We can answer for it that they are all beautifub-when filled out with a pretty face: 1. Bonnet of drawn-cuir-colored crepe, trimmed in front with a fanchon of white lace, loops of green ribbon, and Scotch feathers. The inside trimming , is of bright flowers, of Scotch colors. The cape is covered with a fall of white blond. . . 2. Spring hat of white straw, trimmed with green and blue velvet, and one green and blue plume. The brim . is lined with green velvet. 3. Violet crepe bonnet, trimmed on the front with a black lace insertion. The cape is covered by a rich white blonde, headed by a black lace. On the top-of.the bonnet is a light violet feather, and a pompon of spun glees. The inside trimming is of black and white lace, mixed with searlet berries 'lliad fancy grasses. A black lace barb is tied in with the violet strings. 4. This bonnet has a front of drawn green silk. The graceful soft crown is of white silk. The trimming consists of a tuft of meadow grass and field flowers; also loops of white silk placed directly over-the; crown. The in side trimming is of white and black lace and field flowers. 5. Spring bonnet of white crepe, trimmed with tench= of bright plaid velvet and chenille teasels. The cape is of velvet, orna mented by chenille cord and tassels.
