Although notr - disposed to favor or recommend 'Patent
Mehicines in general, through distrust of their ingredients
and effects, I yet Imovi of no sufficient reasons uty
man marnot testify to the benefits ho believes himself to
have received from any simple preparation, in the , hope
that ho may thus contribute to the benefit of others.
I do this the more readily in regard to Hoollmars Ger
man Bitters, prepared by Dr. C. M. Jackson, of this city
because I was prejudiced against them for many
under the impression that they- were chiefly an. alcoholic
Mixture. I araj, ndebted to my : frieind._ Robert Shoema

tests, and for encouragement to try them when suffering
from great and long continued debility. Tho use. of
three bottles of these Bitters at the beginning of the.

not for, ilx. months before, and had almbst despaired of
regaining. I therefore shank.God'araliay friend for di

Dr. C. M. Jackson:—Dear &ITT—Personal experience
enables me to say that I regard the German Bitters, pre

severe cold and general debility I have been greatly bene

produce similar effects on others.

EVENING EDITION.
Messrs. - Edifors:--Fermit me through the
columns of your paper to say a few words in
behalf of a paltry few, who have long been
striving between hope and despair, in the
hands. of a wiley enemy. Your readers no
doubt remember how promptlfGovenior Cur
tin'Eecall for volunteers at the time Gen. Lee
- made the raids into this State, . was responded
to by the citizen soldiery o the State; and
with what eagerness the young meti of Harris=
burg catching up the suggestion of the -Gov
ernor, a's-promptly for Med themselves into the
"First City Troop" of mounted men. This
company, composed entirely of the young men
of Harrisburg, was immediately hurried off to
the front, ncrthwithstanding we received the
assurance of the Governor, that as soon as the -
invader, had left the State, we would be re
called. This was done with all the six month
troops called out except the twentieth regi-
miint of cavalry, to which the First City Troop
was. attached, being a company. We hurried
on after the enemy, depending . upon the citi
zens along the road for provision, until we
got to Clearspring, Md. Well, we soon crossed
over into Virginia, and about twenty of us
soon got ourselves into the hands of the
rebels, as several fathers and mothers have
been mounAll y attesting for six months.
Why we wereinade such easy prey of by the
enemy, I will not attempt to say, suffice it we
were very easy captured inside of about half
ari l hour. We have now returned, what is left
of us, after suffering unheard of cruelties for
six months. We return again, to our homes,
not as comes the conquering hero,- preceded
by flying streamers and loud sounding trum
pets. We come not flushed with victory and
trophies of our success, but as the 'poor war
worn veteran we return, conscious of having
acted no ignoble part in the experience , of the
past six months. True we have not slain our
enemies by the hundreds or thousands on the
field of battle, but failing in the effort we have
patiently endured the heartless cruelties of
our captors. Several poor fellows finally stir
. dermg up their lives under the cruel treat
merid the few remnining of us, scarce
wortha name, our constitutions shattered or
.conipletely destroyed, and all energy and-per
severance fled from us. But eight of us have
been enabled to return, as follow: D. Guist
wite, Kirk, Isaac Miller, G. Heller, Neil
Drinkers, Blain, Fetroe and Wilson, leaving
more than half the original number taken,
either dead or in the hospitals at Richmond,
they being unable to - withstand the rigors of

The Times special dispatch frinn the Army
of the Potomac says that thciescitament about
a threatened raid by Stuart has subsided. A
detachment of the rebel army crossed - the Rap
pahannock at Fr4ericksburg, on Wednesday
night, anti the following day, Col. Bryan of
the 18th Pennsylvania cavalry captured twenty
of the party.
On Thursday morning - a detachment of the
enemy crossed at Morton's Ford and drove in
the 7th Michigan pickets, but were subse
quently repulsed and forced to re-cross the
river. The Second Corps were discharging
their pieces all s.tgrlay forenoon which may,
perhapa, account for the firing heard in the
direction. of Dumfries. There are other in
dications of rebel demonstrations which are
not proper to be published.
General Stuart is massing his cavalry at
Charlottsville, where he has three brigades,
and at Fredericksburg, where he has two
brigades.
The reported attempt of the enemy to cross
at Raccoon ford was not correct. The Ist
Michigan - cavalry, 1200 strong, went to the
front on Saturday.
Twelve deserters from the 10th Loniq - ana
rebel regiment, arrived in our lines within
three days. They are the first deserters that
have come in from that regiment. They got
hold of the President's proclamation, which
which was distributed by Kilpatrick's raiders.
Later from New Orleans..
NEW Yoax, March 20.
A New Orleans letter of the 12th says that
CoL Tevisc with the Third Maryland cavalry,
arrived yeaterday from Madisonville. They
had scouted from that place nearly all the
country between Tanjipoo and Pearl rivers.
The 9th and 10th battalion of Louisiana rebel
cavalry 'ere driven from Chappapela river,
and a number of them, while they had. been
hunting conscripts, (thirty negroes captured
by the rebels from a plantation near Fort
Pike,) have been retaken. - • -
On the 9th there was not an armed rebel
within sixty miles of Madisoville. •

A West Virginia dispatch says that on the
19th all was quiet in'the Shenandoah Valley.
There is no movement of the enemy, of a Se
rious character. The latest information from
the Kanawha Valley does not confirm the -ru
mor that the enemy's force whs moving on
Barboursville. There are no positive indica
tions that thb enemy contemplates an .exten
sive raid in the Kanawha region.
