the mind becomes shadowed with despair and filled with
the melanchollf 'Aiken= it Umnlappiness of another
becomes blighted with our own.
When the misguided and imprudent votary of pleasure

Sheriff Thoinpson's COMMiIIIIOII Read in Court
He Claims Possession of the Office
EWING RESISTS.
A Duel Arrugement for a Time
[Prom the Philadelphia Bulletin, Oa. 22.]
"It was pretty generally understood in town,
this morning, that Sheriff John Thompson had
receieed his commission'from Governor Curtin,
last night, and that formal possession would
be taken of the office, by the rightful locum
brent this morning. It was also generally be
lieved that this action would not be resisted
but that Mn Ewing would back out gracefully
without force being need tp,ieject• him. How
these reasonable expectations were realized re
mains to be seen from the sequel.
Dno commeitrom riN tome,.
Sheriff Thompson. having gone through thi
essential prelinkinary,of being sworn into of
fire by the Recorder of the city, proceeded, (at
tended by his counsel, Mean. Gilpin, Brewstei•
and Conarroe, and by ex-Sheriff Kern,) to the
Cpnrts of Common_.Pleas and Quarter StilSiOnei
where the commission was read and ordered
recorded, and where the certificate of the oath
of office was filed
Earrut rtiow,eioN
After these forMalities had . been gone through

Sheriff, and passing through the crowd of dial
comfitted deputies in the outside office directly;
to the inner Office, or Sancfum arincionsm, wherei
Mr. Ewing was found busily engaged in writing)
Mr. E. sat with his back to the door, and whe •
he looked around, not only the rightful She'
and his friends and legal advisers stood &bon
him, but the room wits also crowded with a:
multitude of Epoch:dole, who- had followed in;
from the street,' just to see how things were go-
ing to turn out, 1
Mr. Ewing looked over his shoulder, an4:t,
when Mr. Charles Gilpin iutroduced Sheriff
Thompson to Mr. Ewing, the latter took the'
proffered hand of the former, looking about as
well pleased as though he bad been suddenly'
summoned to then and, there swallow the larg
est kind of a dose of castor oil. Mr. Gilpin
then proceeded to business ;he told-Mr. Ewing
with that air of 'inviter in mods fortiter in re for
which he is peculiar, that his client had come
to assume the duties of the office, and that from
that time all 'necessary writs, Ste., must pass
through hie (Sheriff Thompson's) hands.
Mr. Ewing (excitedly)--"Then, sir, you must
go somewhere else to do it; you cannot stay
here !"
' Mr. Gilpin then proceeded to assert the legal
righti of his client, declaring thatwbile willing
to accord any reasonable courtesy to Mr. Ewing
and his assistants, in closing their connection
with the office, Sheriff Thompson intended to
remain in possession of the office; and that all
writs from that moment must go through his
bands.
Pdr.. Ewing still resisted, and refused to re
cognize any right in Mr. Thompson to occupy
the office until hill had consulted his counsel.
Mr, Gilpinsaid this time had gone by; that
Sheriff Thompson was now in legal possession
and he intended to retain it.
CM
Mr. Brewster now mildly interfered, and in a
low tone which could not be heard by the by
standers, he talked Mr. Ewing into some show
of reason. Mi. Ewing became mollified, and
as an evidence of it, he handed the Sheriff a
chair and asked him to be seated.
The next step was to get the crowd out of the
office, and this was accomplished quietly.—
Sheri Thompson and his counsel and friends
remaining in possession ; while Mr: Ewing, also
stood his ground and refused to give up the
ship. In the meantime Mr. George M. Whar
ton was sent for by Mr. Ewing, and one o'clock
P. BL, was , fixed for a meeting of all the coun
sel at the office, and an amicable adjustment of
'the difficulty, if possible. In the outer office
the old deputies remained at their posts ; but
Messrs. Edwin T. Chase and James Freeborn,
were authorized to receive writs, &c., on behalf
of Sheriff Thompson.
While these scenes were being enacted in
doors, a crowd gathered on the outside and
anxiously button-holed every one who came out
of the office, in order to learn how matters
were progressing. All tants. of stories were
afloat, but enough was , understood to elicit the
frequent remark that' Ewing dies hard."
At one o'clock ) the time fixed for the meeting
of the counsel, the representatives of Mr.
Thompson were present. The counsel for Mr.
Ewing had not arrived up to two o'clock. Mr.
Hirst, who was absent from the city, did not
reach here until late; and the consultation with
his colleague 3 had not concluded up to the time
of going to press. .
Mr. Thompson is virtually in possession of,
the office, however. lbe writs have been re,
ceived and executed to-day by Messrs. Chasi
and Freeborn, who represent the new sheriff as
ibove stated. • , _

Canto, Oct. 20.
The Memphis Bulktin, of the 17th inst., sap:
"About tea o'clock yesterday morning, as the
steamer Continental„ loadkd with passengers
and freight from above, was passing Island 21,
this side of Point Pleasant, a blank shot was
fired aortas her bow, frow the Arkansas side,
to bring her into shore. No heed was paid to
the summons, and she passed tel. Presently
about fifty men were seen in sight, all beckon
ing for her to laud; but Capt. O'Neal didn't
heed the summons, when a twelve pound shot
was fired at har t striking the water about ten
feet this side the boat, glancing upward, and
penetrating the "hold," about a foot above the
water mark, lodging in a bale of hay. Of course
the Continental "pat out" from that place,
but not before another shot, striking near her
stern, had been fired at her. The damage to
the ontinental was fortunately trivial.
"The steamer John H. Dickey was about
eight or ten miles behind the Continental, and
there are some apprehensions felt for her safe
ty. Passengers on the Continental think she
might have been captured ; but others, know
ing that she had Government stores and it
number of troops on board, rather indulge the
ppinion that, if fired upon, she may have stop
ed while the soldiers on her "cleaned out,"
the guerillas and captured their'gun:
"The Forest Queen, bound up with troops,
may also have taken a turn at them.
"We shall probably get fut ther pattictdara
from Island 21 to day.
