VIM 0171CILL HOUTTAL RIPUBTeI
May 19, 11360,—Ellen S., sit. 28, single, never wee very
wrong. Two years ago she had an attack of acute rheum.
tismtrom which she was confined to tier bed for two weeks
and subsequity from a relapse for four more. She bee been
well since then till last Saturday, while engaged in how
cleaning, she took cold, bad pain In her back, felt cold.
hot had no decided chill. Two days later her ankles be
gan so swell, which was followed by swelling of the
knee joints and of the hands. She has now dull
pain in her shoulders, and her knuckles are very tender,
red and painful ; both bands are affected, but the right
is moat so. This, then, is a case of acute rheumatism, or,
as it Is now fashionably called 4 rheumatic fever. It il3 a
well remarked typical ease . We will careflilly watch the
case, and from time to time call your attention to the vari
ous symptoms which present themselves. My chief object
in bringing her before you now, is to call attention to a
remedy which has recently been recommended in the
treatment of rheumatism. I mean propylostine. Dr
dwenarins, of St. Petersburg, recommends it in the
highest terms, having derived great benefit from its use
,u 260 oases which came under his care. Various coin
mandatory testimonials respecting it have appeared In
our journals, and I propose therefore to give It another
trial. I must confess lam always incredulous as to the
Worth of new remedies, which are vaunted as speckles
but this comes to us recommended so highly, that we
are.bound to give it a trial.
SAME CASE FOUR DAYS LATER 1
Mar 211,1880.—1 will now exhibit to you the patient ter
whom I prescribed Propylamine, and was then labor
tug under an attack of acute rheumatism. the hat
steadily taken it in dame of three grains every two hour,
(intermitting it at night.) The day after you saw her,
found her much more comfortable, better than she ex
pentad to be for a week or more, Judging from her other
attack. (The patient now walked into the room.) Th.,
mprovement has steadily progressed, and you cant
dl.in notice a marked change in the appearance of her
iiints, which are new nearly all of their mural sue .
nor far our experiment would have seemed very at.
Raoul but, gentlemen, we must wall a little while it
fme we can give a decided opinion as to what is to o,
the result.
Hue to another patient who was placed on the nee si
name medicine on Sunday last ; she has long beer,
suffering from c made rheumatism, and / Read her AI
that dues with an acute attack supervening upon her
chronic affection. The wrists and knuckles were' much
swollen and tense. She took the chloride or Propyla
mine in three grain doses every two hours sad you. will
perceive that the swelling of the joints has much dimin
ished.
THREE DAYS LATER I I
May 98, 1860.—This is, the cue of acute rheumatism
eated with propylamine, the brat of those to which I
ailed your attention at our last Mimic. him Is still very
comfortable, and is now taking three grains thrice Mier.
In this case it has seemed to be followed by very att
istactory results. The second c.se to which your avec-
LIOU was called at our last lecture, has also continued to
derwelr twOrnow bring odor° you a very criaracter•
labs case of acute rheumatism, and if the result be sat
factory , I think, as good jurymen, we snail justly render
our verdict in favor of propy .amen
He b & seaman, en. 20, who was admitted a few days
Igo. 'Bea ocatialonal rheumatic pains, but cot so as
to keep his bed, until eight days - ago. The pains began
in hie rightknee, subsequently named the left knee, Wad
later; the Mints of the upper extremities. these joints
are allswellen, tense and tender. His tongue is furre..l
the skin, at present dry thougo there ha. Noe muoli
sweating. His pulse lalntl and strong, and shorn 90.
He has now used propylamine fief twenty-four beers.
This gattleman Is what may be called a strictly wiles/
case of acute rheumatism. There was exposure to cold
and wet, and this exposure Is followed by a feeding of
coldness, severe articular pain, beginning, as it usually
dorm, in the bower Jonas. There is fever and the profuse
sweating, so generally attlendant on acute rheumatism.
I did net bring this patient before you with the inten
tion of giving you a leisure en all the points conasoted
with rheumatism, bet to again give a trial to tire
new remedy we are thither, and to exhibit Mr you this
typical case, as I have cagiest it, than wince there co aid
ant be a fairer opporbinity (or "creme the medicine in
questiOn. We are, therefore, avoiding the use - of all
other medicines, even anodynes, that ther, may be no
meg/vines ae to which was the efficient remedy. You
shall ace the Mae 0; a future clinic.
THE RESULT.

I=l
.iulo2l,lBBo.—The next of our -convalescents le the
cue of aenterhearnatism before you at our ohnic ot May
28th, which I then called a typical cane, and which it
wee remarked was a fair opportunity for testing the
'worth 01 oar new reated.Y, It wee therefore steadily
given In three grain Often every two hours fbr four days.
The patient has got along very Mealy, and is now able to
walk about, se you see. Ido not hantate to 84 that I
have neve& seen as 'ovate a case of scats rheumatism
to soon restored to health as this man has hem, and
without being prepared to &Ode positive fry ma to the vat
lie of the remedy we have used, I feel behu4 to state
that in the eases in which we here tried the Chloride o
eropylandne, the patients have regained their health
much earlier Ulan under the treatment ortlinerily per
med. I wish gentlemen, you would yourselves try d.
and repast the results.
