May 19,1880,—Ellen S., est. 28, single, never was very
strong. Two years ago she had an attack of acute rheuma
tism,trom which she was weaned to her bed for two weeks
and satisegentiy from a relapse for four more. She has been
well sines then till last SAW day, while engaged in house
cleaning, she took cold, bad pain In her back, felt mild,
hot had at decided chill. Two days later her ankles be
gan so swell, which was followed by swelling of the
knee joints and of the bands. She has now dull
pain in bee shoulders, and her banana are very tender,
red and painful; both bands are effected, but the tight
is meet so. This, then, is a case of acute rheumatism, or,
as it is new fashionably called, rheumatic fever. itis
well remarked typical case We will carefully watch the
case, and from time to time call your attention to the
ws symptoms which present themselves. My chief object
in bri ing her before you now, Is to call attention to a
remedy which has recently been recommended in the
treatment of rheumatism. I mean propyiamine. Dr
Awenarius, of St. Petersburg, recommends it in the
highest terms, having derived great oenefit from its use
in 260 cases which Game under his care. Various com
mendatory testimonials respecting it have appeared in
our journals, and I propose therefore to give it another
triaL I must mass lam always =redolene as to the
worth of new remedies, which are vaunted as opacities ,
but this comes to us recommended so highly, that we
are bound W give it a trial.

steadily taken it in dates of three grains every two hours

He is a seaman, set. in who was admitted a few days
ago. Has has omissions! rheumatic pains, but nut so as
to keep his bed, until eight days ago. The pains began
in his right knee, subsequently affected the left knee, and
later, the mints of the upper extremities. These joints
are all swollen, tense and tender. His tongue Is furred ;
his akin, at present dry, though there has been much
sweating. His pulse is hill and strong, and about 90.
He has now used propylamine for twenty-four hours.
This gsfhticman is what may be called a sides & typical
ease of acute rheumatism. There was exposure to cold
and wet, and this exposure is folios/ea by a Pulling of

does, In the lower pinta. There , fever and the Waage
sweating, so generally attendant on acute rheumatism.

new remedy we are testing, and to exhibit to you this

ifot be a fairer opportunity for testing the medicine in
question. We are, therefore, avoiding the use of all
other medicines, even anodynes, that there may be no
misgivings as to which was the cab:Sent remedy. YOU
shall see the case oh a future clbitc.

ease of acute rheumatism before you at our clinic of kl:thy
280, which I thee called a typical ease, and which If
was remarked was a far opportunity for testing the
worth of our new remedy, It was therefore steadily
given in throe grain doses every two brows for four days.
The patient has got along very nicely, and is now able to
walk about, as you see. Ido net hesitate to s,y that
pave nevea seen as severe a case of acute automatism
so soon restored to health se this man has been, and
without bang prepared to decide positive by as to the val
ue of the remedy we have used, I feel bound to state
that in the cases in which we have triad the Chloride o
eropylaroine, the patients have regained their health
much earlier than under the inanition ordinarily pur
