PENNSYLVANIA HOSPITAL
(nom 011PICIAL Hamel Rims's.)
Mar 19, 1860,—g1.'ea S. - , sm. 28, 'Ogle, never wait very
4ircrng. Two years ago she had an attack of scats rheum's
tisni, trom which she was confined to her bed for two weeks
sad subseciontiy from &relapse far tour more. She has been
wen since then ell last Saw day, while engaged In house
cleaning, she took cold, bad pain in her back, felt cold,
hot had so decided chill. Two days later her ankles be
gan so swell, which was followed by swelling of the
knee Joints and of the hands. She has now dell
pain in her shoulders, and her knuckles are very tender,
rod and painful ; both hands are affected, but the right
is most so. This, then, is a case of acute rheumatism, or,
as It Is now fashionably called., rheumatic fever. It is a
well remitted typical case We will carefully watch the
ease, and from time to time call your attention to the vari
ous symptoms which present themselves. My chief MOM
in bringing her before you now, Is to call attention to a
remedy which has recentlrbeen recommended In the
treatment of rheumatism. I muse prquyientins. Dr
awenerius, of St. Petersburg, recommends it in the
highest terms, having derived great benefit from Its use
260 cases which came under his care. Various com
mendatory testimonials respecting it have appeared in
Our Journals, and I propose therefore to give it another
trial. I must confess lam always incredulous as to the
worth of new remedies, which are vaunted as specifies
but this comes to us recommended en highly, that we
are bound 10 give it a trial.
SAME CASE FOU! DAYS LATER
MAY 1860.—1 will now exhibit to you the patient far
whom I prescribed Propylamine, and we a thee labor
ing under an attack of acute rheumatism. She has
steadily taken 3t In doses of three grains every two boon
(interndttleg it at night.) The day after you saw her, I
iound ho much more comfortable, better than she ex
pected to be for a week or more, judging from her Other
It tiara. (The patient now walked into the room.) the
mprovement has steadily progressed, and you °mate
ditto. notke a marked change in the appearance of her
ants, which are new nearly all of their natural edge.—
nor far our experiment would have seemed very cue
etaful ; but, gentlemen, we must wait a little while be
im% we can give a decided opinion as to what ie to be
he result.
Sere is another patient who was plated on the use or
_is same medicine on Sunday last ; she has long been
suffering from t bronlo rheumatbim, and I Mad her at
that time with an acute attack supervening upon her
chronic infection. The wrists and knuckle! were nook
swollen and tense. She took the chloride of reopyla
mthe to three grain doses every two boars, and you will
pensive that the menthe of the Ants has mach dimin
ished.
THREE DAYS LATER 1 1

ailed your attention at our last chola. nhe is still very
comfortable, and Is now taking three grains thrice daily.
In ibis case it baa seemed to be followed by very sat -
Infactory results. The amond cme to which year atten

I did not bring this patient bstbre you with the I Men
we of igteimg you a lecture on all the points connected
with rheumatism, but to again give a trial to the
new remedy we are testing, and to exhibit to you thin
typical ease, as Ilan called it, than which there co old

question. We arc, therefore, avoiding the use of all
ether medicines, even anodynes, that there may beit:
misgivings as to which was the ediolent remedy. Yen
