HAND, of the Lochlel Cavahy, is at present in the city. We understand that he has resigned. ANEW Yoax REGIMENT passed through to-day It was a fine body of men under the command of Col. Gurnsey. Raw seemed to be struggling to descend all day, hut beyond an occaaorial drizzle, the, earth was uureplenished. We patiently await the caphius showers which the earth so appa rently needs. SWORD PRFSENTATIOR.- An elegant sword, handsomely mounted and properly inscribed, was presented to Major J. A. Mathews, of the 46th Penn. regiment, on behalf of the citizens of Lewistown. on Monday evening last. WANTED, A DOMESTIC to do the general bojase work of a small family. Apply at this office from 8 o'clock in the morning to 12 o'clock, noon. None but those who can come well re• commended need apply. si.plo-3t. CnerLaru Gazoo, of the Dauphin County Re giment, (Col. Jennings' 127th,) arrived in this city to-day, and reports that the health of the regiment le excellent, the men being also activ ly engaged in the various camp duties of drill and preparation. THE On/01/1L REPOILT.-4.s a matter of his tory we publish to-day, the official report of Gen. Pope, relative to the late battles in front of Washington, we have no time nor inclination to read over the reverses again, but refer our readers to the document itself. It will form a part of the history of the present war. Tux Max from Chambeisburg brought a considerable number of passengers from local ities beyond that town, from whom we learn that the excitement and panic in that direction are intense and fearkul. We also noticed with the same train, the influx of a large number of contrabands. Is TRESE PERILOUS TIMES, when everybody is wondering what he shall do with his money, we feel like giving our advice on the subject, which is to look out for the sale of good Real Estate and invest money in that. It is an ar ticle which the rebels cannot destroy or take away, and is always worth the money. SAZITORD'S °PM& Hamm—This institution flourishes like a Bay Tree, the management loses no light to offer attraction, notwithstand ing Uncle Tom is the after piece. The Drawing Roon Concert offers a new selection of songs, among which will be found a new song dedi oated to the Burktail brigade. Harrah for the brave sons of Crawford, May they to the colors prove true ; Hurrah for the sons of old Abraham, And three cheers for the red, white and blue. This will be sung for the first time this even ing by Mr. Batchelor. The programme this evening excels in novelty. On Saturday af ternoon at 2} o'clock a grand afternoon perfor mance for the accommodation of ladies and children, and those unable to attend during the evening. A reduction for schools and large parties will be made by applying to Mr. San ford. I=l THB SWIM which are daily witnessed in our streets, of the devotion of the brave and loyal, should be sufficient to arouse the sympathies, awaken the enthusiasm and open the trea sures of every citizen. "All that a man bath will he give for his life." These men have given that, and who can withhold the sympa thetic purse string. The Bounty Fund needs it; the Bereaved and Deserted it; the county needs it, and our duty to r and love for our selves and our reputation deserve it. If the volunteer deserts the standard on the field we are taught to despise him for hie cowardice. How humiliated would we be could he turn upon us and say, "you deserted me and mine who was appointed to bear the standard and brave the death." 0 ! let those who have fal tered until now Gres with the picture of that departure in their eye, inquiring not of the policy of the ruler or the cause of the war, and the God of battles will bless the heart and magnify the hand. Tim Oxum Arm mils DR/tn.—The Lewistown Gentle says that during the week between the publication of that paper of the 27th and 3d September, it received information that cer tain looofoco demagog% were industriously at work among the Omish and other denomina tions holding religious scruples, telling them that their voting for Lincoln had - brought on the draft, and that now they would have to go to war contrary to their creed, and hundreds of other misrepresentations to be found in the mouths of those who supported Buchanan and his Cab net of traitors long after the Southern con spirators bad commenced the war. We will add here that.the position of the Omish is much misunderstood. Their creed, is, that bearing arms is unrighteous ; but recognizing the au thority of our government, they are willing, first, to bear their full share of taxation and contribute liberally towards putting down the rebellion, or cheerfully to submit to any fines that might be imposed ; and secondly, that as they deem it as wrong to furnish a substitute as to go themselves, they would take the latter alternative, if - compelled to do so. Such was the language used to the editor of the Gazette by numbers of that denomination ; and it al t pears to us that in claiming a privilege given them by the Constitution of Pennsylvania, no reflecting man will cast censure on them any more than be will on the able bodied minor who claims exemption under mere legislative en actment for being under age, or the able•bodied man who claims it on the ground of being over forty-five. APPOINTED.—In consequence of the excite ment .we neglected to notice the appointment, of Israel Gntellus, Esq., from Snyder county as commissioner to superintend the drafting. Mr. G. will make an excellent officer and dis charge his duty faithfully. Mamma Rumoas —The town was again filled last night with all sorts of rumors. The telegraph wires on the Northern Central Rail road were for awhile out of order, one of the telegragh poles being injured below Paikton, but at eleven o'clock all was reported to be right and the cars were running as usual. =I Arreenox.—The citizens of the Fourth Ward of forty-five years and upwards, not already members of any military company, are earn estly requested to call at Alderman Maglauch lin's office and enter their names, to form a company for home defence or any other duty they may be able to perform. Tna Leann CAVALRY.—Forty-eight men be longing to the Lochiel Cavalry reached this city last night, being a party of paroled prisoners, who had been captured between Lexington and Frankford, by the rebel Gen. Kirby Smith.— These men are on their way to Annapolis, where they will await ao exchange, end after which they will again report to the reament. They all look as if they had seen hard service and needed rest. I== Arrsarrox.—Persons not attached to regular ward organizations, and wishing to muster un der experienced officers—men who have been teaching military tactics ever since the war broke ont, in this city and Philadelphia— will find a muster roll at this office, where names will be received during to-day, and will meet for drill this afternoon. The company will be supplied with arms and accoutrements immediately. Immediate action is necessary, and this is a good opportunity for patriotic per sons to obtain rapid knowledge in military tactics. MUTING OF THE STATE MEDICAL BOARD. —The I State Medical Board for the examination of can didates for the post of assistant surgeon in Penn sylvania regiments, assembled this morning in the Hall of the House of Representatives at 9 a. a. The Board consists of Drs. Jas. Stewart, of Indiana, Zino. Lyon, of Williamsport, Truill Green, of Easton, and Surgeon-General Henry H. Smith. The candidates numbered two hun dred and ninty-eight, and after registering their names were placed at the desks, both of House of Representatatives and Senate Cham ber, filling both halls to their utmost capacity. The candidates are an intellectual class of men, embracing many of our well known physicians throughout the State, some of whom have been in practice over fifteen years. They all seem zealous to contribute their services to our troops and aid in the defeat of the rebels now threating our firesides. The demand for State medical officers has lately been very marked, one hundred and sixty having been assigned to duty within the last six weeks. The rapid for mation of regiments has left some of those who recently were sent forward supplied with only one medical officer for a few days, but as the troops were all located in the neighborhood of large hospitals near Baltimore and Washing ton, no inconvenience has ensued. After to-day the hospital department of the State bids fair to have a supply, fhlly equal to any number of regiments that our patriotic volunteers can form, and of an usual high grade of profession al talent. It is understood that assistant sur geons, who have been months on the field and prove themselves worthy, are to be promoted by the Governor, and their places supplied by these fresh assistants, a most excellent move ment and one that is in accordsoce with the course pursued by the Executive in the other departments. New regiments will thus at once obtain'experienced surgeons familiar with the regulations of the service and the routine of the War Department, whilst the new assistants, by being associated with those who have been is service, will have their usefulness much aug mented. I=l Tribute of Respect. crimp of 55TEI REGIMENT, Pa. Ver., Beaufort, S. C., Sept. 1. At a meeting of company (1, 55th Regiment, P. V., (Roberta' Guard, Harrisburg,) the fol lowing preamble and resolutions were adopt ed : Wirt:rums, It has pleased Divine Providence to take from among us to take from among us two of our most esteemed comrades—John Mack and George Sanno while--in the full - vigor of manhood, and after a few days illness ; .ettral whereas, at the time they were called hence by the Great Ruler of the Universe, to give an ac count of their actions while on this earth, they were periling their lives in defence of the Union; Therefore, Resolved, That in the death of John Mack and Geo. Sanno, this company has lost two of its best and most upright members, whose un timely end we mourn and whose memory we cherish. Rewind, That we tender our sincere sympa thy to the relatives and friends of the deceas ed comrades, but we must bow to the will of Providence, who doeth all things for the best, and to whom we must look for consolation in the sad hour of affiction. I?esokal, That a copy of these resolutions be sent to the families of the deceased, and that they be published in the "Patriot and Union" and "Txtionamr," Harrisburg. COB. T. WON, President. JAL G. Rim, Secretary. Wm. B. Booms, BAtmotr. Moasms, Mttzuouss, JAM MAMIE, Seam= CANE, Commiaee -.-- PENNSILVSNIA's PROUCTION.—The citizens and government of the United States is men daily different from any other people or gov ernment onthe face of the globe, even the boasted freedom of England is protected by a standing army. Here in the United States every citizen is a soldier within himself, from the love he has for his country and in the de termination to protect his rights. It is not strange then to see the outpouring of the citi zens from every city, town and village through out the the State, and our word for it, the Home Guards will form no man protection. It is important, however, to be provided with flannel for shirts and material for coats and pantaloons, all of which can be bad at the cheap dry goods house of tram & Bowman, who-have made a large abatement In the price kir thin purpose. 2t flennopluanta Wally telegraph, thurodav 'Afternoon, .6.eptentbcr 11, 1962. A MODEL ESTABLIRILKINT.—Among the many improvements lately made in our city, to which we can point with pride as an evidence of pros perity and as a determination on the part of our business men, no longer to remain behind the " light house," is the completion of Eby & Kunkle's large brick building at the corner of Market and Fifth streets, which is alike creditable to the owners and ornamental to that part of our city. The building is not only one of the largest, devoted to the grocery business, outside of New York, but the stock ch illenges competion.— Without going into detail, we may safely say that the firm keep on hand everything usually kept in a grocery store, (liquors excepted,) and that they sell at very email profits. Their clerks are civil and accommodating, and have strict instructions under no circumstances what ever to misrepresent or take advantage of any customer. A general invitation is extended to the public to visit the new building and exam ine the extensive stock, whether they purchase or not. TO THE YOUNG OR OLD.
