GEN. WOQI. TAKES COMMAND.
The People Up in. Arms.
As we write this, at twelve o'clock last
night, we have the gratifying intelligence that
the people are turning, out et mane to defend
the free eon of Pennsylvania. Dispatches from
all the adjoining counties were received last
night at headquarters, offering any number of
troops for the defence of the capital of the State.
They will arrive here within the next twenty
four hours.
Gen. Wool takes.corninand today. A num
ber of competent engineers are here to complete
the fortifications ; and if ever Stonewall Jack
son attempts to make an attack here, he will
most certainly never retort alive. •
Our friends and enemies at a distance may
rest assured that somebody will be hurt in this
region, if any attack is made upon us.

Williamsport to cut off Gen. White and the Har
