War 10, 1660,—M1m S., tut. 28, single, never was very
strong. Two years ago she had exalts& Weenie rheum
ttsui, trom which she was confined to her bed for two weeks
and subseqentty from a relapse (sr four more. She hm been
well sins then till last gator thiy, while engaged in house
gleaning, she took cold, bad pain in her, back, felt cold,
hot had so decided chill.. Two days Wm her ankles be
kn so swell, which was followed by swelling o f the
nee joints and of the hands. 'Me has. now dull
pain In her shoulders, and her knuckles are very tender,
red and pale ful ; bath, hands are affected, but the right
is most so. This, then ; is a case of acute riuMmatiem, or,
as It M now hufidonably called, rheumatio fever. It is a
well remarked typical ease We will carefully watch the
ease, and from time to lime call your attention to the va l.
omiquiptonis which present themselves. mg chief object
in bringing her before you now, is to call attention to a
remedy which hew recently been reoommended , ihe
treatment of rheumatism. I mean propyismene. Dr.
Awenarius, of St. Petersburg, recommends it in the
highest terms, havidg derived' great benefit frbm its use
in 260 cases which came under his care. Various com
mendatory testimonials respecting it have appeared in
our journals, and I propose therefore to give*, another
trial. 'I must mama lam sdwayn nicreduMus PS to the
worth of new remedies, will* are vaunted as specifies ;
but this comes to us recommended so highly, that we
are bound to give it a trial.
SAME CASE FOUR DAYS LATER I
May 43,1890.—1 will now exhibit to you the patiantfer
whew I prescribed Propylamlne, and wee then labor
ing under an attack of acute rheumatism. She has
steadily taken it In doses of three grains every two hours
(intermitting it at night.) The day after you saw her, I
!wind her much more Comfortable, better than she ex.
peeled to be for a week or more, judging from her other
attack. (The patient now walked into the room.) he

ILle„sigligka marked change in the appearance of her
lute, whist are new nearly alt of their natural size
naitkr our experiment would have seemed very aye
'seal ; but, gentlemen, we must wait a little while ho
me we can give a decided opinion as to what Is to be
,he result.
Here is 'mother patient who was placed on the use of
...te same medloine on Sunday last ; she has long been
suffering from a bronie rheumatism, and I found her at
that time with an acute attack supervening upon her
chronic affection. The wrists and knuckles were much
swollen and tease. She took the chloride of Propyla
mine In three grain doses every two hours, and you will
perceive that the swelling of thejoints has much dish'.
shed.
THREE DAYS LATER I I
Was 98, 1880.—This is the case of acute rheumatism

Wed your attention at our hat clinic. She Is still very
comfortable, and is now taking three grains thrice daily.
In this case It has seemed to be foUo*ed by very sat
isfactory resells. The second case to which your atten
tion was called at our bat lecture, tan *also continued to

our verdict In favor of propylin

later, the loints of the upper extremities. These joint'

his skin, at present dry, though there has bean mach
sweating. 'Hie pulse is Mil and -strong, and about 90.*
Re has now used propyiamine Par twenty-four hours.
This gentleman Is what may be called a strictly typical
Mae of acute rheumatism. There was exposure tamild.
and wet, and this exposure is followed by a feeling of.
coldness, severe articular pain, beginning,as it . usually
does, in the lower joints. There is fever and the profuse,
