The Latest from Virginia.
The Situation-4u Army in Virginia Up to
Monday Morning at Ten O'Cloek.
In the absence of all (.fficial information
from the field of conflict, since. General Pope's
desp.tch of last Saturday 'morning, we take it,
the situation of affairs will be found to be sortie.
what' like this, from information which has
reached ua froin the most reliable, though un
official sources :
That Fits John Porter reached the battle
field of uroveton about 9 o'clock on Saturday
morning, when Geneial Pope renewed the at•
tack on the enemy's position in four columns,
with increased fury,, and that he drove him at
all points towards Gaineavile up to half past
two in the afternoon.
That there was then a partial cessation in the
battle at that hour, arising from the fact that
other reinforcements had not reached General
Pope, and did not reach Centreville until the
close of the day, and that the arrival at that
point of Franklin's troops was mistaken for a
rearttard movement of the main army, which
gave rise to that rumor.
That Sumner reached the field of operations
early on Sunday morning, when the attack
was renewed upon the new reinforced columns
of the enemy, massed near Gainesville, with
such fury as to drive him still further back,
as was indicated by the receding reports of the
cannonade on Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock.
That the favorable result of Saturday's bat
tle up to half•past two in theafternoon, released
Sedgwick's division from his position seven
miles out from the Chain Bridge, and enabled
him to march to the scene of action, which be
must have reached by Sunday, some time in
the day, to take part in the fight.
That Burneide was making his way, when
last heard from, with a heavy column, from
the direction of the railroad crossing on the
Rappahannock, having in his march destroyed
all the bridges behind him towards Manassas
and Gainesville.
II
That oar main army had cut oil the retreat
of the enemy towards Thoroughfare Giap, thus
wedging him in between advancing Federal
columns on every side.
That the railroad was in working order, Sun
day evening, out as far as Warrenton Junction,
thus demonstrating that the enemy had been
forced entirely to the westward of our line of
communication from Alexandria.
That the slaughter on our side, since the bat
tle of Friday, has not been ,anything like as
great as on that day; but that on the
enemy's side it has been greater, terrible as it
was on that day.
That the surgeons sent forward hence on Sat
urday morning, did not leave Alexandria by
rail till late Sunday evening, in consequence of
the condition of the road, which was not deem
ed safe till then.
That the prisoners of war captured by Gen.
Pope io Friday's battle had reached Alexandria
Sunday, and were being shipped cff down the
Potomac by steam to Fort Delaware:
That the prospect on Sunday was of the cap
ture or dispersion of the whole army of the in
surgents, was highly probable, nay, certain, if
our reinforcements were pushed forward with
rapidity, though the hitherto superior celerity
of the enemy in his movements may probably
baffle his pursuers.
Such seems to be the actual position of things
i np to Sunday evening - , judging from the beet
!unofficial lights at our command. The story
afloat yesterday of the capture of Stonewall
',Jackson and his army seems to have been a na
tural inference from the beleagured condition
Of the enemy at that time.

City Point Destroyed by Federal Gunboats.
The Rebels at Harrison's Landing.
They are . Shelled by the Monitor and
The steamship Baltic arrived here this morn
ing, and awaits ordtrs. Reinforcements are or
dered to day to Jamestown Island.
City Point has been entirely demolished by
the federal gunboats. For some time past the
rebels have been firing into our transports pas
sing up and down the James river, and Commo
dore Wilkes sent the rebels word if it was not
discontinued he should destroy their buildings
at City Point.
On Thursday last the rebels brought down to
City Point eight cannon and about two hundred
riflemen, and opened tire on the Federal flotil
la, which at the time was near and abreast of
that point, whereupon our gunboats opened fire
upon the Point and demolished every building
in the place, and dispersed the rebel force.
Foaraass Mosnos, Aug. 31.--The Ironsldes
left Fortress Monroe to-day at noon for Phila
delphia. Her trip has been succesaful.
A 11 , g of truce was sent up the Janiesliver
to Adren's Landing to-day with Col. Forney, of
Alabama, who was wounded and taken prisoner
and paroled some time ago. They also took up
some women and children.
The steamship Baltic is being loaded' with
troops to-day.
Sammons, September 1 —We have received
a private letter from Newport News, dated Aug.
30, which gives the followihg information:
Nearly all the troops have left this place for
parts unknown. Among those that remain are
the 86th N. Y. Volunteers and the 11th Penn
sylvania. The .
. weather is extremely pleasant
here now, and we expect to have a fine time for
a while.
The Monitor, Galena and all the gunboats
have arrived here from the James giver. I
learned from some of the sailors that the rebels
have come down and occupied Harrison's
Landing. The gunboats opened on them with
their thunder and gave them fits for a short
time. This was the parting work in this , lo
cality for some time, as the whole of the fleet
have arrived here. Where they are bound I
of course am not able to say, but you willkiici*
very soon. The Monitor is indeed a queer
looking craft—she has an awning on her now,
fore and aft her turrets, but when no duty she
looks as clean as a lumber raft.
