To Mum GINISAI Hamm, Genera in Chief :
Ai_epon as Illiscovered,that a large force of
the enemy was turning our right towards Ma
nassas, and that the division I had ordered to
take part theta: two diya before.hadmot yet wr
rived there from Alexandria, I immediately
broke up my camp at Warrenton Junction and
Warrenton, and marched , rapidly back in three
oolumns.- ' 1
I directed MoDawell with his own and Sigel's
corps and Renos division to march upon Gaines
ville by the Warrenton and Alexandria pike.
Reno and one diviaionof Heintzelman to march
oti to Greenwich, and with Porter's corps and
'Hoialitir's division I marched back to filename
jactiolt. McDowell was ordered. toenterpose
between the forces of the enemy which , had
passed down to Manassas through Galesville
and his main body, which was moving dottn
from White Plains through thoroughfare Gap:
' This was completely accomplished. 7 ,
.-ifqogotieek who bad Pawed through tbetkoP
being driven back to the west side. The forced
sent to Greenville were' designed to support
McDowell, in case he met too large a force of
the enemy.
The division of Hooker marching towards
Manassas came upon the enemy near Kettle
Run, on the afternoon of the 27th, and after a
sharp action. routed 'them couipletely, killing
and wounding 800, and capturing their camps
l and baggage and many stands of arms.
I This morning the command pushed rapidly
to Manassas. Junction, which Jackson bad
evacuated three hours in advance. He retreat
ed by way of Centreville, and 'took the turn
pike towards Warrenton.
He was met when nix miles west of Centre
vine by McDoWell and Sigel. •
late this afternoon a severe fight took place,
which has been terminated by the darkness.
The enemy was driven back at all pobats, and
thus the affair rests. Heintrelman's corps will
move cc him at daylight from Centreville and
I do not see how he is to escape without heavy
loss.
We have captured a thousand prisoners,.
many arms and one piece of -artillery.

HIS TROOPS RAPIDLY PUSHED FORWARD
The Rebels are Driven from Manes-
sae and Centreville.
Rumored Capture of Ewell's Whole
Rebel Division
Desperation of the Rebel Army.
BAXTEKORB, Aug. 2`9
We learn from a gentleman who left Alexan
&la last night that General• McClellan .had
snocEeded in restoring order, and gettingi his ,
troops forward in such force that the excite
ment which had prevailed during the two pre
ceeding dais was in ameasure abated.
There was still a great. variety of ntiniors
afloat, but it was ascertained that the rebels
bad beea driven from Manassas and Centreville
aid that the parties of reboil cavalry that opera
ted so dimatrously on the railroad and at Fair
fax Court House had retired towards Gaines
villa and Thoroughfare Gap.
No fair was' enterfaiied for 'Washington or
Alexandria, though it was though that Jack
son was advancing towards the Potomac at
Leesburg, along the base of the Shenandoah
Mountain. If so, be is making a . most desper
ate venture, and ought to be trapped to his
destruction.
A rumor prevailed in Washington at an early
hour this morning that 'information had been received of the capture of '6,000 rebels, stip
posed to be the divielon of General Zwelldblit
it conld-not be traced to any reliable sou'yce:
If,correct, we cannot think that it be withheld
from the public.
Our informant says that though no official
order had yet been made public to that effect,
it was generally understood at Alexandria
that the supreme command of the Army of
Virginia had been tendered to Gen. McClellan,
and that he bad accepted and entered upon hie
duties.
The fact that Generals. Porter, Reintselaistu
and Burnside were operating with General Pope,
holding Fredericksburg as their base of opera
tions, where there is au abundance of supplles,
,w,a4 regarded at Alexandria, that all would let
he worked out to our advantage.. If the Bebe'
division of General Ewell is between :beat and
Alexandria, they ought to capture or destroy
it.
There were still crowds of fugitives coming
into Alexandria, and it was reported at Wash
ington that they were also crossing the line
from the neighborhood of Leesburg: The ne
groes were in great numbers.
Y. S.—Since the above was in type we leitrn
that quite a gunober of passengers from Wash
ington repeat the rumor of the , capture of Isis
thousand rebels. We hope it may prove true,
as such a result would give assurance of the
safety, without disaster, of the great body: of
the army beyond Manassas.
The' movement' of the enemy is regarde4 in
Washlugton-us one of desperation, and that
failure will be deetroctlon to hint. Some ariny
officers dechtrathat Jackson is now just wiiere
they wanted to have him, and that ,he Will
never get back to Richmond.

away whato:ter they - meet. :
The correspondent says, the troops cim hold
the Galtagainst any force, and that the Rebels
do not mean to attack, but think they 'hi'
starve the United States troops ont. The num
