Notwithstand ing the excessive heat, the ball was tilled in every portion by an overflowed audience, and the different performers were right heartily re ceived. The troupe performs again this even ing, and a capital bill is presented. i THE LAPT NIGHT —Panorama of the Great Re bellion.—The special exhibition of the great pan orama of the rebellion, intended as a compli mentary benefit to the artist, Harry Davis, will come off at Brant's Hall this evening, and will positively be the last exhibition of the painting in this city. The above description was furnished by Imlay Bicknell. Look out for them, as they are well calculat ed to deceive those who are not well acquainted with the notes of that bank. EVICHT WOMAN'S Durr.—lt is the duty of every woman, whether she has Mends in the army or not, to aid in every way she can to aid the cause. Who would not save a sol dier's life that could ? Many poor fellows die for the necessary food, care and clothing in hos pitals. Now is the time to prepare. While fruits are plenty, let them be canned and dried in abundance. Let the work of sewing and knitting be commenced and followed up in dustriously by all. Let your friends, soon to leave for different battle fields, see in your present activity an earnest of future care and support. It will serve to strengthen their hands and encourage their hearts, and inspire them with increased seal in the service upon which tjley have entered. 1=1:3=1 UM NEW POSTAI. CURRENCY. Some of the new issues of postal currency have made their ap pearance in our city. The twenty-five cent issue is printed on bank note paper, and is about one third as large as a dollar bill. The centre is composed of five five cent stamps, with the head of Jefferson upon them. The figures '26' are upon each upper corner. At the top are the wor d s , restage currency. Furnished only by the Assistant Treasurers and designated deposi tories of the U. 5? and at the bottom, 'Receiv able for postage stamps at any post ace.' On the reverse side are the figures '2s' in the cen tre, and the words Exchaugable for United States Notes by any Assistant Treasurer or des knitted U. 8. Depository, in sums not less than five dollars. Act approved July 17, 1862.' The fifty cent notes are of the same description, except that the stamp b, are the bead of Wash ington, and are printed on white paper, while the twenty-five cent ones are upon light straw colored paper. APPOINTS]) AUDITOIL—Hr. Stephen Little, re cently of the Pennsylvania Railroad, has been appointed Auditor of the Northern Central Railway Company. His office is with Joh❑ S. Lieb, Esq., Treasurer, at Calvert street station. Mr. Little, until occupying railroad positions, was connected with the Presbyterian Banner as its business editor. A COMMODOBS Comiaodoie Foote and Col. Small, from Nixon's Cremorne Gar dens, N. Y., will commence holding their levee at Brant's Hall, this city, next Wednesday evening. These two individuals are said to be the two smallest and most perfectly formed men ever exhibited in this country. The Commo dore is twenty-one years of age, twenty-eight inches high, and weighs only 221. pounds.— Col. Small is sixteen years of age, twenty-eight and a half inches high, and weighs only twenty two pounds. They will no doubt create a sen sation here. Vommuts. ort BE DRAFTED. —But a short time is left, befare the order for drafting will be enforced. Already have the proper officers for the execution of this duty been appointed in almost every county, and the enrollments are now being made. In our county the work will soon be completed, and all who wish to avoid being drafted should therefore at once volunteer to fill up the ranks of the New Regiments, or if they prefer it, enlist in the Old Regiments, whose officers are now recruit ing. Remember, that if you wait to he drafted you receive no bounty, whereas, if you volun teer you receive full bounty, and in the old regiments you receive it as soon as you are sworn in. The importance of filling up the new regiments must be apparent to every one. RELIC OF OLDEN Tiara.—Our up river exchanges notice a discovery that has quite recently been made in the bed of a cove putting up the Sue quebaona river on the farm of George C. Gore, of Sheshfluin, Pe., of what promises to be quite an interesting relic. It is a boat of large and ancient conatruAion, built entirely of oak, and put together with wrought iron nails. It is from two and a half to three feet in depth of hold, and from present indications, from thirty to forty feet long. The aides are curved and terminate at the ends in a cut water. The ac tion of the water has uncovered a small portion of it.; the remainder is under quite a high bank of earth which has been formed over it, and on which trees of considerable size have grown.— The exposed end hasbeen broken up by some of the pilfering propensities of antiquarians and by the destructive propensities of boys. Could I it have been exhumed entire it would have been a curiosity worth preserving. There is much speculation of course as to its origin, use, and even present contents. Our opinion is that it was a transport boat used by Gen. Sullivan's army in its some what celebrated expedition up the Susquehanna soon after the battle of Wy oming. Represent contents consist, we think, of about a peck of green corn, a saddle of ven ison and some twenty or thirty tons of sand.— The park of artillery and other arms, which fancy has located in its conspicuous hold, will hardly pay the labor of digging it out. A. SLENTz, Sec'', Tam Daarr.—The great topic of discussion on the streets, and in all business places, is the order to draft, and we have yet to see or hear the man who does not give the measure his most earnest and hearty approval. Not know ing on whom the lot may fall, and knowing that they are as liable to be called to go as their neighbor, men nevertheless welcome the order, and rejoice in the encouragement it affords that the government begins to comprehend the mag nitude of the work before it, and is determined to finish it up. That is what the people want. They want the rebellion crushed, annihilated, blotted out, and its traitorous leaders consigned to speedy and condign punishment. Whatever means the government needs to accomplish this end, will be furnished, and furnished cheer fully, if they can be assured that the work shall be done, and done speedily and effectually. Draft 1 Draft 1 Draft ! Precious the time we are losing. Draft ! Draft ! Draft 1 War will not wait on youth's choosing Women will harrow the plain, Children will garner the grain, Age wield the mattock again. Is not the prize worth the pain ? Draft 1 Draft 1 Draft 1 Tax NEW Clomax.—The comet which is now attracting some attention among astronomers, was discovered as early as June 18th, and when ' first seen, the eccentric motion was quite slow, it being a greater distance than the sun, and moving in an orbit, making a very large angle' with the elliptic. At that time it appeared to astronomers as a nebniee, considerably condensed at the centre, the light being intense enough to be easily seen when the wires of the telescope micrometer were illuminated by artificial light. From this fact astronomers conclude that the amount of matter composing this body is con siderable, exceeding the one discovered on the 8d of July in a very large ratio, for , they esti mate the intensity of the light of the second equal to that of the first on the Bd, when it was distant only nine millions of miles. On the evening of the 31st of July the embryo of a tail was distinctly seen by the aid - of the tel escope ; and as early us the 28th the light was more conceetrated on the side, in the direction of its motion, showing that the tail was already in the process of formation. On the 7th of Au gust the tail had increased in length and bril liancy. As it is now approaching both the earth and the sun, and being so favorably situated for ob servation, it will, without doubt, attain great brilliancy. Judging from the records of past comets and the position of the present, it is thought it will reach its maximum brilliancy about the 26th of August, when it will be only one-fourth the distance it was on the 18th of July. It is now moving toward the north pole of the heavens, and on the 16th inst, was only eight degrees from the pole, being the nearest approach, and it is now moving again towards the equator. Owing to its close prox imity to the pole, during the next two weeks it will be visible during the whole night. fitunoglnania IDailg &graph, Saturbap afternoon, 'august 23, 1862 _.,___. lIECCEMI I=l ~ ,,. ..41.0....... A MODEL Eirranusnitarr.—Among the many improvements lately made in our city, to which we can point with pride as an evidence of pros perity and as a determination on the part of our business men, no longer to remain behind the ‘' light house," is the completion of Eby & Kunkle's large brick building at the corner of Market and Fifth streets, which is alike creditable to the owners and ornamental to that part of our city.
