HourrAi. woos j MAY 211, 1860,—Ellen net. 28, single, never was very wrong. Two years ago she had an attack of acute enema tism, trom which she was Confined to her bed for two weeks mod eubsegently from &relapse for four more. Sheba s been well since then till last Saturday, while engaged In hours cleaning, she took cold, had pain in her back, felt cold, trot had ao decided ch ill. Two days later her ankles be gan so swell, which was followed by swelling of the knee joints and of the hands. She has now dull l ain in her shoulders, anti her knueklee are very *under, red and painful ; both hands are affected, but the right is most ao. This, then, is a case of acute rheumatism, or, as it is now fashionably called, rheumatic feVer. RIB a Well remarked typical case. We will carefully watch the cane, two irom time to time eall your attention to the virt ue, symptoms which present themselves. My chief object in bringing her before you now, is to call attentiou to a remedy which has recently been recommended In the treatment of rheumatism. I mean propylamine. Dr. Awenarius, of St. Petersburg, recommends it in the highest terms, having derived great benefit from Its use in 260 cases which came under his care. Various com mendatory testimonials respecting II have appeared In our Journals, and I propose therefore to give it another trial. I meet confess lam always incredulous as to the worth of new remedies, which are vaunted as specifies ; but this comes to us recommended so highly, that we are bound to give it a trial. SAME CASE FDIIR DAYS LATER I MAY 230.880,-1 will now exhibit to you the . patient for whom I priacribed Propylamine, and was than labor ing under au attack of acute rheumatism. She has steadily taken it in doses of three grains every two hours (intermitting it at night.) The day after you saw her, I bound her much more comfortable, better than she ex pected to be for a week or more, judging from her other ettace. Otte patient now walked into the room.) the mprovemeut has steadily progressed, and you cannot 111 to notice a marked change in the appearance at her note, which APO new nearly all of their natural Mae.— mu far our experiment would have seemed very sue mint ; but, gentlemen, we must wait a little while be . re we can give a decided opinion as to what is to be lie result. Here is another patient who was placed on the use at ...4; same medicine ou Sunday last ; she has long been suffering from c broMc rheumatism, and 1 found her at that time with an acute attack supervening upon her chronic affection. The wrists and knuckles were much swollen and tease. She took the chloride of Propyla mine in three grain doses every two hours, and. you tail perceive that the swelling of the Joints has much dlmin sited. THREE DAYS LATER KO 26, 1860.—This is the case of acute rheumatism treated with propylamine, the drat of those to which I called your attention at our last clinic, blue is still very comfortable, and is now taking three grains thrice daily. In this case it has seemed to be followed by very' eat talactory resells. The second cide to which your atten tion was called at our last lecture, has also continued to do wet r I will now bring before you a very character istic case of acute rheumatism, and if the result be eat. factory, I think, as good jurymen, we shall justly render oar verdict in favor of propylamth !, , He is a seaman, at. 26 who was admitted a few days . ago. Has ba'l occasional rheumatic pains, bin not awed to keep his bed, until eight days Igo. Thu 'pains began hie right knee, subsequently affected thd lett knen, and later, toe joints of the upper extremities. . L_ These Minus are all swollen, tease and tender. tongue Is furred ; his skin, at present dry, though there has been much sweating. His pulse is fall and strong, and about He has now used propylamine Rir twenty-four hours. This gentleman is *hat may be called a strictly typical case of acute rheumatism. There wasexposure to cold and wet, and this exposure is followed , by a feelfdig of coldness, severe articular pain, beginning, as it usually does, in the lower joints. There is fever and the pecanse sweating, so generally 'attendant onacute • rheumatism.' 1 did not bring this patient before you. With the inten tion of giving you a lecture on all the points connected with rheumatism, but to again give a trial to the new remedy we are testing, gal to exhibit to you thin typical case, as I have called it, than.which there co old not be a fairer opportunity fot'f,tieUng the medicine in question. We are, therbfbils, tikoldisfg the use of all ether medicines, even anodynes, that there may be no misgivings as to which wad the efficient remedy. Yoo shall see the ease el a future clinic. Tilt; RESULT. A FAVOIIABLE VEMDIOT. ,;,June 9, 1860.—The next of our convalescents is the case of acute rheumatism before you at our clinic of May 96th, which 1 then called a typical came, and which It Was remarked was a fair opportunity for testing the worth of our new remedy, It was therefore steadily given in three grain dame every two hours for four days. The patient has got along very nicely, and is now able to %elk about, us you me. Ido not hesitate to sty have uevea seen an severe a case of acute rhettuoatis*, - so epos restored to health as this man has been, and without being prepared to deoidepoeitive by as to the val.. se of the remedy we have used, I feel 'bound to slate that in the canes in which we have tried the Chloride o rropylataine, the patients have regained )lAedr health touch earlier than under the treatment ordinarily pun_ sued.
