Our military friends in went of anything in this line should give our friend Glover a call, as we are satisfied, he will dress them up handsomely. It Tits CROPB.-A season, if made to order, could not have been more propitious to agriculture than the present. Every crop cultivated thus far has yielded handsomely. There has been no drought, and no untimely or unseasonable rains. In the churches no necessity has existed to read the collects for raift, nor for the return of pleasant weather. There was, a little chill upon the growing corn, but it was of short du ration, and the fall crops promise fairly as those of summer. We hear agriculturists say that within ten days their corn has risen an inch a day. In the fields along the railroads the ears may be seen sticking out like those on the heads of a string of burden car mules. * ARRIVAL or VOLUNTEKRB.—The following companies additirnal to those published in Thursday's Tstroaarri,•arrived here and went into quarters at Camp Curtin, from 12 55. on Thursday up to the same hour yesterday : Capt Wm. Tun DEATH or JAs. &mot; a brief ac- count of which we gave in yesterday after noon's edition, occurred at the first bridge below Monkton, Md., station, and not at Marys ville, as we were informed. The deceased came to his death in the following manner, as we learn from one of the hands on the train of which Mr. B. was conduct& : A new, or what is termed a " green "hand was at his pest as breakman, and in passing over the top of the train to give bim some instructions or other, while approaching the bridge, Mr. S. unfortu nately forgot to keep a lookout before , he came in contact with the top of the bridge, and was hurled betvveen the bumpers of the cars, strike ing the ground outside the track. He was picked up immediately after, but life was ex tinct, He had a frightful gash under the chin, extending along the throat to the. right hand corner of the month, a hole in his temple, and both hands smashed by the train running over them (as is supposed) after he fell to the ground. The accident waned about two o'clock a. m. The body of the unfortunate man was con veved to Bolton station by th: train ootar.. akar& °owner ~.i.ineentree. was summoned to held au inquest. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death. Deceased was the son-in-law of Mrs. Knight, of this city. He resided in Bridge port, opposite Harrisburg, and leaves a wile and several children to mourn his loss. His remains were brought this place on the 8 o'clock train last evening, and conveyed to the resident* or his father-in-law. The Baltimore 1 dallies erroneously state that Mr. S. was an en gineer df the train. He was conductor of a freight train. I=l WAII. MUTING IN fainstzTows.—Two mon strous war meetings were held in Middletown ihis week. The first met at Union gall on Tuesday evening and was presided over by J. W. Stofer. The Chairman stated the object of the meeting briefly, and then h.troduced the Rev. 0.0. M'Clain, who addressed the audience at length, making some excellent remarks, af ter which Rev. D. A. L. Laverty, made a neat and very appropriate speech—confining him self entirely to the object of the meeting: A roll was then opened by Dr. J. B. Rnisley, who headed the list, when ten other young men im mediately stepped up and signed it. A com mittee of five persons was appointed to draft resolutions and make arrangements for arther meeting. A committee ma appointed to solicit sub scriptions. The Second meeting was held at the railroad on Wednesday evening, and organized by choos ing Mr. M. Johnson as President, Messrs. Lawr ence 'Marty, Fred'k Cassel and John Carmany as Tice Presidents; E. S. Yentzer and J. W. St°. for, as Saoretaries.—The most able, patriotic, stirring and appropriate addresses were made by Sem Cain, Wieting, Laverty, and Messrs. Johnson, Walborn, Cassel and Captain Rohrer. Two of the Vice Presidents, Elberty and Camel, were in the war of 1812, are upwards of 80 years of age, and of course their presence cre ated great enthusiasm. Strong and excellent resolutions were read by Jno. Monaghan, Esq., and unanimously adopt ed, after which an opportunity was given for the young and able bodied men to enlist. Some forty enrolled their names, and we have no doubt but by to-morrow the company will be full.. One of the most esteemed and promi nent citizens of Middletown, J. Rohrer, Esq., has consented to accept the captaincy. Middletown is fully aroused and will do her whole duty. When they fill the company now forming, they will. have TRIM =Dm soldiers in the field. Subscriptions tor a bounty were opened yes- terday, and we learn the committee is meeting with success. One of the lists was headed by James Young, Esq., with three hundred dollars. IJaion Hall will be open as a recruiting sta• .ion.tintil Saturday evening, where all recruits are - requested to-report. This eveliing . soother war meeting will be held in Ceutre &rave, to be,,addressed by an able and:eloquent Idinlater of the Gospel, Rev. Cain. Ipanusei Maly taturbat7ftlotning, 'august 9, 1862 A Moron Farmiusnitatr.—Among the many, improvements lately made in our city, to which we can point with pride as an evidence of pros, perity and as a determination on the part of our business men, no longer to remain behind the light house," is the completion of Eby & Kunkle's large brick building at the corner of Market and Fifth streets, which is, alike creditable to the owners and ornamental to that part of our city. . The building is not only one of the largeSti devoted to the'grocery business, outside of New York, but the" stock ch Illenges competion.— Withont going into., detail, we may safely say that the iirmicAP do hand eierything usually, kept in a grocer3retore, (liquors excepted,) and that they sell at very small profits. Their clerks are civil" and nceeramodating, and have strict instructions Under no circumstances what, ever to misrepresent or fake advantage of any customer. A general invitation is extended to the public to visit the new building and exam ine the extensive stock, whether they purchase or not. , WHEN THIO HAREI pIIRG BAlpi of f icers were deliberating on a proper design for the notes of the denomination of ones and twos, author ized by the act of the Legislature, they were puzzled which of the many designs presented for their examination Should be adopted. In the midst of their discussion, and at the instance of Judge Murray, one of the directors of the Bank, sugeeted that one of the notes be adorned with a portrait of Gen. Scott. Judge Murray urged his portrait with just eloquence, and after some discussion it was finally adopted. While hi Washington shortly after, Judge Murray pre sented one of the notes with tlp portrait in hand to. Gen. Scott, , and alter it had been ex amineil by the aids of the old veteran, it was pronounced the most life-like and correct that they ever had examined. After the plate from which the notes were•to be printed, was, adopt ed, Mr. Weir, the citable; was so highly Pleas ed with the vignette of Gen. Scott, that he ordered several copies to be printed for private circulation. There is a pleasing incident In these facts, which we deemed of sufficient importance to lay before the community, as another evidence not only of the loyalty of our people generally, but of the sterling patriotism of our friend, Judge Murray. CULTIVATION OF me WEED. —The tobacco crop, we nu t ice along the line of the Northern Central railroad, in_the neighboring counties of Cum• betland and York, looks promising, and if cul tivated on a larger scale, would no doubt well repay the planter for his trouble, especially at this time, when "Old 'Virginia," the famous to bacco State, is devastated and ruined by seces sionism, and the tobacco crop neglected and en tir,ly abandoned in some localities. Indeed we never saw a finer "patch" of tobacco in our travels "from Dan to Beersheba," than can be seen a few miles below the village of New Cam berland, on the opposite aide of the Susque hanna. .Why is it that the farmer; who under stand the growing of the plant, do not cultivate it on a more extensive scak , is a mystery to us.
