the quota ot 8014000 volunteers required by

Admiral Goldsborough and Fleet Cape. Case
have asked to be relieved of their present com
mand. It is rumored that Goldeborough will
be _relieved: and Gam. Wilkes take his place,
while Com. Porter of the Mortar flotilla will
be flag officer of the, naval attacking forces
before Richmond.

Six: —We beg leave to report that immedi
ately on the receipt of your commission, we
hastened to Washington to obtain a permit to
visit the camp hospitals'on the James River, ee
also those at and around Fortress Monroe. We
could not obtain the first, but were granted the
latter. We visited the Hygiene, Fortress Mon
oe, Middle Creek, Chesapeake, Portsmouth and
Newport Nnws Hospitals. In these were many
Pennsylvanians; wounded, sick and Weary.—
But, almost without exception, cheerful and
grateful Jor -the care and attention.d& had
ueen paid to their waute. It wad an incident
in.our visit, a hundred times repeated, which
made us leel proud of our State, to hear- o
soldiers when informed of the object of our call
ing on Them, exclaim, "How careful our Gover
nor is of us." And those from othei States would
say, "Pennsylvania knows how to take care of
her sick and wounded."
I We found at the Hospitals, all of them, that
the beds were clean and comfortable, their ven
tilation good, diiinfecting agents in the rooms,
and from the kindness of distant bat humane
fellow citisms, in all bat one of them, a great
variety of delicacies suitable to the sick palate.
The 'patients in all of the Hospitals, with this
one exception, were unanimous in expressing
their satisfaction at the food and treatment they
received. At the Portsmouth Hospital very
universal complaint was made of their diet`
whilst they spoke in praise of all other atten
tions. We felt'lt our duty to speak to the bur
geon on the subject, and received in reply, that
he gave them just what the Government fur
nished for their use. Portsmouth Hospital, it
is true, is cut Off iron) near Union sympthits
by the fact of its being located in a hot bed of
secessionism. It would therefore be well to di
rect the attention of the generous men and
women throughout the land to supply its lar
der with those delicacies so grateinl to a sick
appetite.
We found a number of the soldiers to whom
was due a considerable amount of.back pay, but
which they were enable to obtain not having
een furnished with their descriptive lists. To
have these furnished to them they begged us to
draw your attention. There also seemed to us
to be a number <A the men, whom wounds and
broken down constitutiuns render it advisable'
they should be discharged and returned to their
triends,
Whilst at Newport News we had an opportu
nity of witnessing a regimental review of the
troops at that place. Among them were seve
ral regiments from our own State, whose disci
pline and manoeuvring compared well with
all others in the field. The men, with whci
we afterwards met and conversed, were cheer:
fill and contented ; lroking healthy and robust, ,
