and subseeently :roma relapse fer-four more. Shehas been

cleaning, aLd tiok col had: paid in • her • batlki felt cold,

gan so swell, which was followed by swelling of the
knee joint* and: of the bands. She has now dull
pain in hie ehbulders, and her knuckles are very tender,
red and painful ; both hands are affected, but the right
ill Men 50 This, then, is -a case of acute rheumatism, or,
as it is dew Tashionably called rheumatic lever. Ms a
well remarked typical case We will carefully watch the
case, and firm; time to time call your attention to the vext-
JOS syMptores which present themsolvei. My chief object
in bringing her before you now, is to call attention to a
remedy which has recently.been recommended in the
treatment of rheumatism. I mullprOpylamine. Dr .
Awesarius, of St. Petersburg,- fecommends it hi" the
highest berme, having derived great Dement from its use
at 260 Muses Which came under his care. Various com
mendatory-testimonials respecting it have appeared in
our journals, and I propose therefore to give it another
trial I meet confess lam always incredulous as to the
-worth of titiw remedies, which are vaunted as specifies ;
but this comes to us recommended so highly, that we
are bound to give it a trial.
SLUM CASK FOUR DAYS LATER !
MA! 23,1830-I will now exhibit to you the patient for
whom prescribed Propytamine, and wa a then labor
ing under an attack of acute rheumatism. iihe has
steadily taken it in doses of three grains every two boars
(intermitting tt at night.) The day after you saw her, I
bound her much more comfortable, better than she ex
pected to be for a week or more, judging from burnt her
attack. (the patient now walked Into the room.) 'the
improvement hue steadily progressed, and you cannot
tail to notice a marked change in the appearance of her
joints, which are new nearly all of their natural size.—
Thug far our experiment would have seemed very suc
cessful ; but, gentlemen, we must wait a little while be
tote we can give a decided opinion as to what is to be
the result.
Here 1a another patient who wua placed on the use of
_is same medicine on Sunday lust ; she has long been
suffering from c trouts rheumatism ; and I found her at
that time with an acute attack supervening upon her
chronic affection. The wrists and knuckles were mui h
swelter' and tense. She took the chloride of Propylei
mimi in three grain doses every two hours, and you will
perceive that the swelling of the Joints has much dimin
ished.
THREE DAYS LATER !I
iLtv 20, 1860,—This is the case of acute rizieumat6m
treated with propylamtne, the first of those to which I
called your attention at our last clinic, She Is still very
comfortable, and is now taking three grains thrice qty.
In thiecase it has seemed to be followed by very eat
isfaCtory restate. The second C -se to which your atten
tion was called at our last lecture, hue also continued to
do wet :• I will now bring before you a very character
bine case of acute rheumatism, and if the result ho sat.
factory, I think, as good Jurymen, we shall justly render
our verdict In favor of propylamin •
He isa seaman, act. 26, who was admitted nfew days
ago. HMI had ocaasiOnal rheumatic pains, but sot so as
to keep his bed, until eight days ago. The pains began
in his right knee, subsequently afflicted the loft knee; and
later, the Joints of the upper estrentities. 'these joints
are all swollen, tense and tender. • His tongue is furred '
•
his skin, at present dry, though there has been much
sweating. His pulse Shill and strong, and about 90.
He has now used propylamine for twenty-four hours.
This gentleman is what may be called a strictly, typical
case of acute rheumatism. There was exposure to cold
and wet, and this exposure is followed by a feeling of
coldness, severe articular pain, beginning, as it usually
dors, in the lower joints. There is fever and the profuse
sweating, so generally attendant on acute rheumatism .
I did net bring this patient before you with the inten
tion of giving you a lecture on all the points connected
with rheumatism, but to again give a trial to tke
new remedy we are testing, and to exhibit to yuu this
typical case, as I have called it, than which there co uld
not;be 4.4lrer.opportunity for Mating the medicine le
question. We are, therefore, avoiding the use of all
other Medicines, even anodynes, that. there may be no
misgivings as to which was the efficient remedy. Yen
shall see the case of aTuttire clinic.
THE 'RF.UI.,T
A'FAVORABLE VF ')LOT.
Juni9, 1860.—The next of our convalescents is the
case 01 acute rheumatism before you at our clinic of May
20th, which "I thencadled a typical case, and which it
waavemarked was a fair , opportunity [or testing the
worth di Our new'remedy,' It was Mercian steadily
given In three grain doses every two hours for four days.
The patient has got along very nicely, and Is now able to
walk about, as you see. Ido not hesitate to s,y that 1
Dave nevea seen as severe a case of acute rheumatism
so soon restored to health as this man has been, and
without being prepared to decide positive by as to the val
ue of the remedy we have used, 1 . feel bound to state
that in the cases in which we have tried the Chloride o
Propylamiuth the patients nave. regained their health
much earlier than under the treatment ordinarily' pur
sued. 1,1081.1 gentlemen, yon would yourselves try 16,
and report the results.
For a full report of wtdoh the above Is a condensed
extract, see the Yhiladelphla Medical and Surgical Re—
porter. It is the report after a fair trial by the ticstmecl

to give numerous certificates from astonished doctors
