Omar. Haerrui, Ilspoinej
Eitisi lb, 1880,—Ellen S., set. 213, single, never was very
strong. Two years ago she had an attack of acute rhetuna
ifsm, trom which shelves confined to her bed for two weeks
and eubsesently Rom *relapse for four more. Skeltobeen
well since then till last Satur day, while engaged Lousen
cleaning, she took cold, had pain hi her back, felt cold,
hot had no decided chill. Two days later her ankles be
gan so swell, which was followed by swelling of the
knee-joints and of the hands. She has now dull
pain in her shoulders, and her knuckles are very tender,
red and palatal ; both bands are affected, but the right,
tamest so. This, then, is a case
W of acute rbeumallsm, or,
as It is new•feattionably, called, rheumatic fever. his a
well remarked typical ease e will carefully watch the
eats, and from time to time call year attention to the vari
ous symptom which present themselves. Idy chief object
In bringing her before you now, is to call attention to a
remedy which has recently been recommended in the
treatment of rheumatism. I m min propplamfite. Dr.
aweuatius, of St. Petersburg, recommends it in the
highest terms, having derived great benefit from its use
to 260 cases which came under his care. Various com
mendatory testimonials respecting it have appeared In
our jommais, and I propose therefore to give It another
trial. I must confess lam always moredehtee as to the
worth of now remedies, which are vaunted as specifies;
bin this coma to as recommended so highly, that we
are bound to give it a trial.
LN,A.
f4A ME CASE FOUR DAYS LATER I
Mix 2; 1860.-1 will now exhibit to you the patient fer
whom I prescribed Propymmlne, and wee then labor
ing under an attack of acute rheumatism. She has
Steadily taken it in doses of three grains every two hours
(InternOting it at night.) The day after you Saw her, I
sound her much more condbrtable, better than she ex
pected to be for a week or more, Judging from her other
Aiwa. (The patient now walked into the room.) The
Improvement Wm steadily progressed, and you cannot
fall to notice a marked change in the appearance of her
joints, which are new nearly all of their natural Mee.—
Thug for our experiment would have Named very sea
esesfal ; but, gentlemen, we must wait a little while be-
fore we can give a decided opinion as to what is to be
the result.
Here is another patient who was placed on the use of
.2e mune medicine on Sunday last ; she has long been
sphering from o hronio rheumatism, and I found her at
that Ume with an mute attack supervening upon her
chronic allnotlen. The wrists and knuckles were much
swollen and toast'. She took the chloride of Propyla
mine In three grate doses every two hours, and yon will
nereerre that the swelling of the joints has much dimin
ished.
THREE DAYS LATER II
VOW 26, 1860.—This is the cue of acute rheumatism
Vested with prepylamino, the drat of thus to which I
called your attention at our last chide. She Is still very
comfortable, and Is now taking three grilse thrice daily.
In this case It has seemed to be followed by very sat
isfactory resells. The second c .se to which your atten
tion was called at our last lecture, has also continued to
do wel r I will now bring before you a very character
istic case of acute rheumatism, and if the malt be sat.
factory, I think, &II good Jurymen , we shall justly render
our verdict In favor of propylamm
He is a Beaman, at. 26, who was admitted a few days
ago. Has had ocaasional rheumatic pains, but not so as
to Mumble bed, until eight days ago. The pains began
le his right knee, subsequently affected the left knee, and
later, the Joints of the upper extremities. Thew )(tints
are all swollen, tense and tender. His tongue Is furred ;
his akin, at present dry, thougn there has been much
sweating. Him pulse MIMI and farm, and about 90.
Ile has now used propylamine ftir twenty-four hours.
This gentleman is what may be called a strictly typical
OW of acute rheumatism. There was exposure to cold
and wet, and this exposure is followed by a filing of
coldness, severe articular pain, beginning, as it usually
does, in the lower joints. There is fever and the profuse
sweating, so generally attlendant on acute rheumatism.
I did net bring this pedant belbre you with the I n ten
don of giving you a lecture on all the points connected
with rheumatism, but to again give a trial to the
sew remedy we are testing and to exhibit to you this
typical case, as I have Calle d it, than which there co aid
110% bee fairer opportunity for testing the medicine in
question. We are, therelbre, avoiding the, OM of aU
ether medicines, even anodynes, that there may be no
misgivings es to which was the efficient remedy. You
shall see the me et a Allure clinic.
THE RESULT
A FAVORABLE VERDICT.
Jung, I.B6o.—The next of our Asonvalesceats Is the
cue of acute rheumatism before you at our ciliate of May
Nth, which I then called a typical cue, and which it
wu remarked was a fair opportunity for testing the
worth of our new remedy, It wee therefore steadily
given in three grata doses every two hours for four days.
The patient has got along very nicely, and is now able to
Walk about, ma you see. Ido not hesitate io ssy that I
have neves seen as severe a oasis of acute rheumatism
mum restored to health as this man bas been, and
without being prepared, to decide positive by as to the val
