vrtik a twrret this very morning, Tuesday, July
15: the paps ts.ned this morning and.intended
to be scut di by the mails which leave here at
7/ and 8 o'clock, were not deposited in
the Poet Office until 8 40, or nearly two.hours
litt er the mails had actually left, and • among
the lot thus sent to the office, two' different

It is a6o well known to the editor of the Pa

fAlowing description of a confl ignition :—The
devasting element, unscathed with floods of
water, belched forth' 'its crimson tints and
spr e.rd the fiery flag of devastation over entire
squares, unchecked by the superhuman exer
tions of the fireman, who seemed like lost
spirits in the hall of Pandemonium, 88 they
flocked around the terrific spectacle.
A Naw °prim WONDER —Mr. Henry Craig
has invented a little microscope of great power,
which is so simple that a child may use it. The
lens is of novel construction, magnifying about
100 diameters or 10,000 times, and owing to its
simplicity, it is invaluable for physicians, scied
tlficmen, students and schools. The instrument
only costs two dollars, thns being within the
reach of all in the community, and it should
be on the table of every family. They are for
sale by E. S. German, Religious Book Deposi
tniy, No. 27 South Second street.
Fannin Scumor,.—Our readers are referred
to!the advertisement of the Edgehill School,
Princeton, N. J., found in another column of
Ibis morning's TELEGRAPH. The estai.lishment
has the reputation of being one of the very
beat institutions in the country for the educa
thin of young men, and enjoys an extensive
Va.tronage. The Principals of the institution
are Rev. James P. Hughes, A. M., and Rev.
Thos. Cattell, A. M„ the latter a brother of
Rev. Mr. Cattell, of the Presbyterian (0. S.)
Church, of this city.
THE RESTRICTION or TRAVEL TO OLD
.PoINT.—
ds there seems considerable misunderstanding
on the part of persons desirous of visiting Old
Point or Norfolk in the regular Government
line of steamers in relation to permission to
travel in them, it is advisable to publish the
regulations, which are easily understood : All
persons attached to 'the Quartermaster's and
Commiseary's Departments; all agents employ
ed by the Government ; fathers and mothers of
wounded soldiers ; persons employed to furnish
meat and provision to the army and navy—pro
viding they produce evidence either from Major
General Dix or Captain Goldsberough that they
are employed as such. It will be seen from the
forgoing that the restriction will exclude the
representatives of the press from proceeding to
the seat of war by the line of steamers from
Baltimore. Within the past ten days a num
bei of correspondents of newspapers left the
Peninsula for the purpose of going North, and
upon reaching Baltimore were unable to pro
ceed further South.

IN TOWN. —Lieut. Horace Porter of the Regu
lar army is in our city, on a flying visit to his
father, ex-Gov. Porter. The Lieutenat looks
remarkably well, after having borne the fa
tigues, the hardships, and the dangers of three
hard fought battles in South Carolina. It will
be remembered that he was the hero of Fort
Tu i laski. He personally sup.rintended the
plarAing of the batteries around the rebel
works, and had the honor of personalty — tring
the first gun upon the rebel fort, which he bit
with telling effect. Lieut.• Porter is ordnance
officer upon the staf f of Maj. Gen. Hunter, and
was chief of ordnaoce for Gen. Benham's expe
dition on James Island, to Secessionville, where
our troops fought so bravely against treble
their numbers. The Lieutenant speaks highly
of the Pennsylvania volunteers now in South
Carolina, and says they are distinguished for
thqir universal good conduct, their courage
and their bravery. Harrisburg has one com-
Psny among them, commanded by Captain I. S.
Waterbury.
The Lieutenant is bearer of despatches from
Gen. Hunter, and will sail to-morrow for Hil
ton Head, from New York.
We predict.for the brave and gallant Porter
a sPeedy promotion, and a glorious, career.
ORGAN GRINDIMS.—Who does not remember
the joy that used to thrill his juvenile bosom,
when the notes of the hand-organ burst on hie
earl, and how swiftly he ran to the meat corner,
whin.° the boys had already congregated, to
hear the musicand see the monkey. . The finest
opera could not have afforded half so much
genuine delight. In after years, where we have
put away childish things, we often spend vast
same to gratify our musical tastes, we patronize
expensive concerts, we talk learnedly of the
merits of the "Sopranae" and ."Contraltos,"
and "Bassos," but who would not give them
all for one hour of the exatio pleasure that he
seed to feel when the.organ grinder came. to
,Lookiogfroa► our window, as we write,
we See a laughing throng of children, crowded
around a stout man, in a blue shirt, who is
vigorously grinding out the air, "Gay and

joyius glee at the pranks of the monkey.
Nimbly climbing up .a tree, he sports for a feW
minutes among the branches, then, at a signal
from his master, jumps down, takes the prof:
fertal penney and seats himself on the top of
the organ, with an air of grave and solemn
dignity to the ineffable delight of the juvenile
spectators. Viewing a scene like this, how ir
resittibly are the words of the ancient song
'brought to mind,
' 0 would I were a boy again.
When life aeem'd form'd of sunny years
And all the heart that knew of pain,
Was wept away in transit nt tears."
:Tbere are many persons who'turn up their
very arisotocratic noses at these street musi
cians, but ue must confess that we do not
share in this prejudice. Their music generally
coronets of simple, popular airs, which "plait,
folks" appreciate. As a clan the organ grind
ertt, are simple and inoffonsive. They are nearly
all Italians, and are never known to settle pet
manently in this country. By traveling from
door to door with their music, in the course of
two'or three years, they pick up a few hundred
dpllars, with which they return to their own
sunny land and spend the remainder of their
dale in comparative ease and affluence, i n
