MAT 19, 1880,—Ellen S., set. 28, single, never was very
strong. Two years ago she had au attack of acute rheum
tism, trom which she was confined to her bed for two weeks
and subsesentay from a relapse Per four more. Michas been
well since then all last Saturday, while engaged in house
cleaning, she took cold, had pain in her back, felt cold,
hot had BO decided chill. Two days later her ankles be
gan so swell, which was followed by swelling of the
knee joints and of the hands. She has now dull
pain in her shoulders, and her knuckles are very tender,
red and painful; both bands are affected, but the right
Is most so. This, then, Is a case of acute rheumatism, or,
as it is now fashionably called, rheumatic fever. It Is a W
well remarked typical case e will carefully watch the
case, and Prom time to time call your attention to the vari
ous symptoms which present themselves. My chief object
in bringing her before you now, is to call attention to a
remedy which has recently been recommended in the
treatment or rheumatism. I nr.an propyramine. Dr.
Awenarius, of St. Petersburg, recommends it In the
highest terms, having derived great benefit from its use
in 250 cases which came under his care. Various com
mendatory testimonials respecting it have appeared in
onrjournals, and I propose therefore to give it another
trial. I must confess lam always incredulous as to the
worth of new remedies, which are vaunted as specifies ;
but this comes to us recommended so highly, that we
are bound to give it a trial.
MT!M:I777TMT;VMI:77II
Mar 23,1880.—1 will now exhibit to you the patient for
whom I prescribed Propylarnine, and was then labor
ing under an attack of acute rheumatism. She bus
steadily taken it in doses of three grains every two hours
(Intermitting it at night) The day after you saw her, I
found her much more comfortable, better than she ex
pected to be for a week or more, judging from her other
attack. (The patient now walked Into the room.) the
Improvement has steadily progressed, and you cannot
fail to notice a marked change in the appearance of her
'cants, which are new nearly all of their natural size.—
Thur far our experiment would have seemed very sue
armsful ; but, gentlemen, we mast wait a little while be
fore we cau give a decided opinion as to what is to be_
the result.
Hero is another patient who was placed on the use of
—le same medicine on Sunday last ; she has long been
suffering from c bromic rheumatism, and I found her at
that time with an acute attack supervening upon her
chronic affection. The wrists and knuckles were much
swollen and Muse. She took the chloride of Propyla
mine In three grain doses every two hours, and you will
perceive that the swelling of the joints has much dimin.
tithed.
THREE DAYS LATER !I
May 26, 1860.—This Is the cue of acute rheumatism
treated with propylamino, the first of those to which I
called your attention at our Last clinic, She is still very
comfortable, and is now Liking three grains thrice daily.
In this case It has seemed to be followed by very oat-
Icfactory resells. The second case to which your atten
tion was called at our last lecture, has also continued to
do wel l• I will now bring before you a very character
istic case of acute rheumatism, and if the result be at
factory, I think, es good jurymen, we shall justly render
Our verdict In favor of propylamin •
He Ise seaman, att. 28, wholvas admiiteda few days
ago. Has had ocattaional rheumatic pains, but not so as
to keep his bed, until eight days ago. The pains began
in his right knee, subsequently affbcted the left knee, and
later, the Mute of the upper extremities. These joints
are all swollen, tense and tender. Ms tongue is furred ;
his skin, at present dry, though there has been much
sweating. His pulse is fall and strong, and about Wl.
He has now used propylamino for twenty-four hours.
This gentleman is what may be called a strictly typ eat
ease of acute rheumatism. There was exposure to cold
and wet, and this exposure is followed by a feeling of
coldness, severe articular pain, beginning, as it usually
does, in the lower joints. There is fever and the profuse
sweating, so generally attleudant on acute rheumatism.
I did not bring this patient beibre you with the I n ten
tlon of giving you a lecture on all the points connected
with rheumatism, but to again give a trial to the
new remedy we are tatting, and to exhibit to you this
typical case, as I have called it, than which there co uld
not be a fairer opportunity for testing the medicine in
question. We are, therefore, avoiding the use of all '
other medicines, even anodynes, that there may be no
misgivings as to which was the efficient remedy. You
shall see the case of a rause clinic.
THE RESULT
A FAVORABLE VERDICT
Jostle, 1880.—The next of our convalescents is the
ease of aenterheninatiam before you at our chute of May
28th, whleh I then called a typical case, and which it
was remarked was a fair opportunity fur testing the
worth of our new remedy. It was therelore steadily
given in three grate dotes every two hours for four days.
The patient has got along very nicely, and is now able to
walk about, as you see. Ido not hesitate to say that I
have nevea seen as severe a case of acute rheumatism
so soon restored to health as this man has been, and
Without being prepared to decide positive by as to the val.
ue of the remedy we have used, I feel bound to state
that in the eases in which we have tried the Chloride o
Propylamine, the patients hive regained their health
much earlier than under die treatment ordinarily par -
seed. I wish gentlemen, you would yourselves try it,
and report the results.
For • full report of which the above lea eondensed

porter. It le the report after a fair trial by the beamed -
