[Foos OFFICIAL HOSPITAL Moaned MAT 19, 1880,.—Ellen S., set. 29, single, never was very strong- Two years ago she had an attack of acute rheostat. Hem, from which she was confined to her bed for two weeks and subsceentty from a relapse for four more. She has been well since then till last Safer day, while engaged in house cleaning, she took cold, had pain In her back, felt cold, hot bad no decided chill. Two days later her ankles be gan so swell, which Was followed by swelling of the knee joints and of the hands. She has now dull pain in her shoulders, and her knuckles are verytender, red and painful ; both bar o ns are affected, but the right is most so. This, then, is a case of acute rheumatism, or, RS it Is now fashionably called, rheumatic fever. It Is a well remarked typical case We will carefully watch tIIh case, arid from time to time call your attention to the Vari ous symptoms which present themselves. My chief object in bringing her before you now, is to call attention to a remedy which has recently been recommended to the treatment of rheumatism. I mean propplamine. Dr. Awenarlus, of St. Petersburg, recommends it In the highest terms, having derived great oeneLit from its nee in 250 cases which canto under his care. Various com mendatory testimonials respecting it have appeared In our journals, and I propose therefore to give it another trial I must confess lam always incredulous as to the worth of new remedies, which are vaunted as specifies ; but this comes to us recommended so highly, that we are bound to give it a trial. SAME CASE FOUR DAYS LATER I MAY 23, 1860.—1 will now exhibit to you the patient for whom I prescribed Propylamine, and wa s then labor ing coder an attack of acute rheumatism. She has steadily taken it In doses of three grains every two hours (intermitting it at night.) The day after you saw her, I found her much more comfortable, better than she ex pected to be for a week or more, judging from her other attack. (The patient now walked into the room.) the Improvement has steadily progressed, and you cannot fall to notice a marked change in the appearance of her Joints, v.hieh are new nearly all of their natural size,— Thor Car our experiment would have seemed very suc cessful ; but, gentlemen, we must wait a little while be fore we can give a dectued opinion as to what Is to be the result. Here is ma r, her yahout who was placed on the use of .is game km Sunday last ; she has long been suffering from c Monk; rheumatism, and I found her at that time with an acute attack supervening upon her chronic affection. The wrists and knuckles were much swollen and tense. She took the chloride of Prepyla mine in three grain dues every two hours, and you will perceive that the swelling of the joints has much dimin t shed. THREE DAYS LATER II MAY 28, 1880.—Thts Is the case of acute rheumatism treated with prOpylamine, the erg of those to which I called your attention at our lest clinic, she is still very comfortable, and is now t dam; three grains thrice daily. In this case it has seemed to be followed by very vat lefactury retinas. The second oak, to which your atten tion was called at our last lecture, has also continued to do wel r I will now bring before you a very character istic case of acute rheumatism, and if the result be eat factory, I think, as good Jurymen, we nail justly render our veriffit In favor of propylamin He lea seaman, wt. 28, who was admitted a few days ago. Has hal occasional rheumatic pains, but not so as to keep his bed, until eight days ago. Tho pains began in his right knee, subsequently affected the left knee, and later, the pints of the upper extremities. These joints are all swollen, tense and tender. His tongue is furred ; hie skin, at present dry, thouxh there has been much westing. Hie pulse is foil and strong, and about lio. He has now used eropylamiue fit twenty-four hours. This gentleman is what may tie railed a strictly typical muse of acute rheumatism. There was exposure td cold and wet, and this exposure is billowed by a feeling of Coldness, severe articular pain, beginning, as It usually does, In the lower joints. There is fever and the profuse Sweating, so generally atttenitant on acute rheumatism. 1 did not bring this patient before you with the I n ten. lion of giving you a lecture on all the points connected with rheumatism, but to again give a trial to the new remedy we are testing, and to exhibit to you this typical Cale, as I have called it, than which there co old not be &fairer opportunity for testing the medicine In question. We are, therefore, avoiding the use of all other medicines, even ano !pies, that then• may be no misgivings as to which was the efficient remedy. You shall see the case 01 a future cliffic. THE RESULT A FAVORABLE VERDICT. Jura% lB6o.—The next of our couvaleacenta is the case of acute rheumatism before you at our clinic or May 26th, which I: then called a typical case, and which it was remarked was a fair opportunity for testing the worth of our new remedy, It wax therefore steadily given in three grain doom every two bourn for four days. The patient Us got along very nicely, and is now able to walkabout, as you sea. Ido not hesitate to aiy that I have neves seen as severe a case of acute rheumatism so soon restored to health as this man has been, and without being prepared to decide positive by as to the val ue of the remedy we have used, I feel bound to sta to that in the cases in which we have tried the Chloride o Propylamiue, the putouts h tiro romined their health much earlier than under the treatment ordinarily pur sued. I wish gentlemen, yen would yourselves try It, and report the results.
