Every thing should be Christian in a Chris
tian.
Our life should show forth oar love.
False virtue is a sail that hides from us oar
sins.
Crime.is never left imperfect.
True hope is not deceitful. The just, sooner
or later, triumph over the unjust.
Fear is the first executioner to which the
sinner is given over after his sin.
It is best to receive the gifts of God In Ws
own time, rather than wish to have them in
01:11T own.
To forbid Christians to read the .Bible is to
Interdict light to the children of light.
Men are more inclined to ask questions of
cariosity, than to seek necessary instruction.
There msbnt few who era not in some re.
like the Pharisee.
It is almost impossible to call God our Fath

Let your manner belie your inward feelings,
and show yourself without concealment.
Whit is small, is small ; but to be faithful in
Grit whioh is bleat, is to be great.
Mauls too curious with< regard to natural
thinse, and too, zealous as to the supernatural.
'When a man is full of himself, he is empty
,of God, and must take charge of his own soul.
What awaits the man who fall into the hand
.of the living God f
God leaves the judgment of externals to
lltan; the recesses of the heart are known to
WM.
Men are believed on their word, but Qod is

Heresy snd schism arise from the passions of
men.
Sighs are the portion of the heart on earth ;
praleoWill be the language of heaven.
Itis the dawn of happiness to comprehend
The misery of
_sin, and to desire the satisfaction
of those who serve God.
It is the heart wbicik sbail be.judged by him
who knows the heart ; with the heart we must
please him.
God despises and abandons double-Minded
men, as be takes pleasure to instruct the sim
ple of heart.
What is the misery of that man who feels
the wants of the body more than the necessi
ties of the soul!'
Of all the virtues, Christ speaks in praise of
faith only, because a living faith includes the
other graces, and nothing can stand la its
stead.
What termerity is it to measure the eternal
and infinite mind of the Creator, by the feeble
fallible reason of the creature
The greatest sins are those committed against
the love of God, because they conflict with the
first and great commandment.
True humility is found in the confession of
the grace of God working within the soul, and
if this grace is not received in its amplitude, it
is wholly rejected.
Never deal rigorously with any one ; the ex•
actitude of honesty does not demand all that
is due. If you would be a friend beloved, be
not strictly exacting, nor fear to be in the ad
vance.
There is a time of just judgment coming,
when we shall not have the power to do what
we wish, because we did It not when it could
have been done.
The world is filled with good intentions that
are never executed. These but serve to render
the sinner inexcusable, because the sins hav
ing the preception of the knowledge of duty.
Who is there among us who would not go to
a hospital or a prison, were we assured that
Christ bad need of us? And yet Christ com
mands our attendance, and we tarn a deaf ear
to him, and do not minister unto him.
The everlasting pains of the lost come from
a sense of the infinite dignity of an offended
God. The eternal bliss of the elect results
from the wondrous goodness of the Lord, who
has crowned them with glory.
It is an easy thing to hide oneself from the
world, and to avoid the praises of men. But
it is difficult to conceal oneself from one's own
eyes, and not to feel a self-gratulation and ap
plause for an indifference or a contempt of hn
man approbation and admiration.
Noamsart Womm Ann nor Wes. The suit
ferings of our sick and wounded soldiers have
drawn forth freely all the noble and be
nevolent characteristics of the women of the
North, hundreds of whom have flocked to the
hospitals east and west, and are cheerfully act
ing as angels of mercy to the poor fellows who
are suffering there with wounds and disease.
Conspicuous among these philanthropic women
is Mrs. Henry Baylis. the wife of a merchant
of this city, who as chief directress of the Wo
men's Relief Hospital, has left a home of afflu
ence and hurries to the relief of our sick and
wounded soldiers at Yorktown. She ,has not
only volunteered to endure the privations, and
discharge the disagreeable duties of hospital
life, but she has studied the profession of war
geon and nurse, so that she can care for a
wounded Jimb equal to any of the surgeons of
the army. The memory of such a woman
should be cherished by the whole nation, and
she is richly entitled to a fame equal to that
which Florence Nightengale has so justly earn.
