Hamm Rams.] MAT 38, 18911,—Ellen S., wt. 28, single, never was very strong. Two years ago sbe bad an attack donde rheas:la. tism, trom winch she was confined to her bed for two weeks and a tbsegenUy from a relapse for four more. Shorties been well since then till last Saturday, while engaged in house cleaning, she took cold, bad pain In her back, felt cold, hot bad no decided chill. Two days later her anklet be gan so swell, which was followed by swelling of the knee joints and of the bands. She has now dull pan In her shoulders, and her biocides are very tender, red and painful ; both bands are erected, but the right is most so. This, then, is a case of acute rheumatism, or, as it is now thshionably called, rheumatic fever. It is a well remarked typical cam We will carefully watch the ease, and from Ume to time call your attention to the vari ous sym g r r t i i t: which present themselves. My chief object in brio her before yon now, is to call attention to a remedy w has recently been recommended In .the treatment of rheumatism. I mean propylastfee. Dr. AWOOII7IOB, of St. Petersburg, recommends it In the highest terms, haying derived great benefit from Its use In 260 oases which came under his care. Various com mendatory testimonials respecting It have appeared in our *weals, and I propose therefore to give it another trial. I must confess lam always moredolous as to the worth of new remedies, which are vaunted as specifies ; but this comes to us recommended so highly, that we are bound to give it a trial. SAKE CASE FOUR DAYS LATER Mar 23, 1860.-I will now exhibit to you the patient fer whom I prescribed Propylaea:dna, and was then labor ing under an attack el acute rheumatism. She has steadily taken It m doses of three grains every two hours (intermitting it at night) The day after you saw her, I found her much more comfortable, better than she ex pected to be fora week or more, Judging from her other attain& (The patient now walked Into the motet.) The Improvement has steadily progressed, and yon cannot fait to notice a marked change in the appearance of her Joints, which are new all of their natural 811.8. !awe far our experiment would have seemed very suc cessful ; but, gentlemen, we must wait a little while be fore we can give a decided opinion as to what is to be the result. , . here is soother patient who was placed on the use of ...ae tame medicine on Sunday last ; she has long been suffering from o Wide rheumatism, and I Mond her at that time with en acute attack supervening upon her chronic allbetion. The wrists and knuckles were much swolkm and teeao. She took the chloride of Propyla mine In three grain doses every two heave, and you will perceive that the swelbng of the jointa has much dimin ished. MIME DAYS LATER t I MAT 96 1650 .— This is the case of acute rheumatism treated with propylamine, the first of those to which I called your attention at our last clinic, She is still very comfortable, and is now taking three grains thrice daily. In this case it has seemed to be Ibilowed by very eat: tafactory results. The second case to which your atten tion was called inner last lecture, has also continued to do wel k• I will now bring before you a very character hale case of acute rheumatism, and It the result ho eat. factory, I think, as good Jurymen, we shall justly render our verdict in favor of propylaWn ,, He Is a seaman, an. 96, who wag admitted a few days ago. Has had ocaasional rhanmatki pains, but not so as to keep his bed, until sight days ago. The pains Item in his right knee, subsequently affected the left knee, and later, the joints of the upper extremities. These joints are all swollen, tense and tender. His tongue is tarred • his skin, at present dry, though there has been mural.' sweating. His pulse is toll and strong, and about 90. He has now used propylamine for twenty-four hours. This gentleman is what may be called a strictly typical =se of saute rheumatism. There was exposure to cold and wet, and this exposure is followed by a feeling of coldness, severe articular pain, beginning, as it usually does, In the lower Joints. Thine is fever and the profuse sweating, so generally attendant on acute rheumatism. I did net bring tide pallent bolero you with the I men tion of giving you a lecture en all the points connected with rheumatism, but to again give a trial to the new remedy we are testing, and to exhibit to you this typical ease, as I have called it, than which there no uld not bee fairer opportunity for testing the medicine in question. We are, theretbre, avoiding the use of all other medietasit, oven anodynes, that there may be no misgivings as to which was the efficient remedy. You shall see the cue 01 a naive clinic. THE RESULT A FAVORABLE VERDICT. Juni9, 1800.—The next of our • convalescents le the ewe of acute rheumatism before you at our clink) of May 116th, which I then called a typical case, and which It was remarked was a fair opportunity fur testing the worth of our new remedy, It was therefore steadily given In three grain doses everytwo hours for Poor days. The patient has got along teary nicely; and la now able to walk about, as you see. Ido not hesitate to say that I have nevea rah as severe a cue of acute rheumatism so aeon restored to health as this man has been, and without being prepared to decide positive by as to the val ue of the remedy we have used, I feel bound to state that In the eases In which we have tried the Chloride o PrOpylanthie, the patients have regained their health much earlier than under the treatment ordinarily pur sued. I wish geittlemen, you would youreelves try It, and report the results. For a fall report of which `the above le a condensed extract, lee the Philadelphia Medic& mid Burgled Re— porter.
