• • AM CURTIN. —We have been requested to
that in the present condition of affairs,
i)1 . our citizens will be permitted to 'pass
the lines at Camp Curtin. The sentries
all aimed with loaded muskets, and any•at

DISTINGUISHED COMPLIMENT Toe RAMILISBURD
-o.—No city in the country of the size of Har
risburg has more men filling positions in the
Army and Navy than Harrisburg. We are al
ways ready to chronicle the rapid rise of our
dtizeus, and we take particular pleasure In no
ticing the many posts of honor given to the
young and gifted Lieut. Snyder, who was deputy l i
and is now acting Provost Marshall of llerns
town, Va. Lieut. Snyder is one of the youngest
Ira in the army, and to be selected from
smug so large a number of officers as General
t•ta has under him, we must any is a very
bui,guished compliment. Gen. Sigel respects
ability more than age, and we congratulate him
ou hi; good selection ; and more especially con
gratulate Lieut. Snyder on his appointment.

RURAL ENJOYMENT. —A pic-nic party assembled
pleasant grove on the other side of the
ricer 'ant Saturday, consisting of about a dozen
loos and light-hearted ladies and:children.
A table wis hastily improvised, On which was
any quantity of good things, to which
acapa justice was done. The woods constantly
mug with the most melodious music of mirth
aid good humor. We like these little family
lard's pie ales, for we believe they acoomPlish
'd. great deal of good. The blessings and
hilarity are invariably bestowed upon the con
situtions and dispositions of 'those who take
Nit in such outdoor sports, much more ear

t he immortal Shakspeare admonishes us "to
throw physic to the dogs."

picked of a wallet containing several dollars in
money, The thief contrived to escape with his
iii.gotten booty, Instances of pocket-picking
crowds are beginning to become quite fre

t he purlieus of Philadelphia, having been
drivini from theme by the stringent laws pass
at the last session of the Legislature with
I sferesce to persons of their calling. It is a
gle,t pity that the law in question was not
kith, general iu its application, in which case
with a little vigilance on the part of the police
ih thoritles, the whole clyfacking fraternity
might have been driven from the State. As
the law now stands, the rascals are driven

the regiment in the late battle thus: "After an

Caroms ENCOURAGING TORIEBYEI To "Sturm
OVT."-A lady who has great success in rear
ing poultry, puts a few hen eggs with those of
her turkeys, so as to have the chickens hatch
about one day sooner than the turkeys. She
assures us that the lively chirping of the chicks
encourages the pent up turkeys to increased
efforts to break their shells! It may be so ; we
cannot refute the statement, and, would not, if
we could. We know that she had a fine flock
of turkeys, last year, and every one was a vt r
itable bird of paradise.

WONT Commie:nom IT.—They say that the
ladies of fashion fe England have resolved not
to counteeance the new style of hoops just
brought out by the Empress Eugenie. That
stylei is designed only for "plump" ladies,
and; of course, makes ladies to whom Nature
has been niggard of the cushiony adipose in
their composition look positively frightful.—
Now, fashionable ladies in England are com
monly lean. They .affect the delicacy of the
sylph, and scorn the robustness of the milkmaid.
The Eugenie hoop, therefore, would not suit
I them. It would be a burlesque on their thin
ness. Hence their opposition tkit. But how
about its adoption in this country ? Shall the •
fashion of France or of England rule with us ?
Otir ladies must see to it: They ''can hive
their choice; but common sense would say :
Try both. Let the thin adhere to the
thm of their English cousins, and the plump
copy Eugenie.
A Beams Damns= Boy .--Among the wound
ed at the Government Hospital at Washington
is a little drummer boy 'amed Paul Bower,
who had his leg shattered by a shell in one of
the late engagements on the Peninsula, so that
amputation had to be performed to save his
life. The little sufferer balls from Manchester,
and is scarcely fifteen years of age ; yet he
bore himself like a hero opthe field, and up
to the time of being struck; had kept in the
thickest of the fight. His father and brother
are both in the army, so that the family would
seem to be a fighting one. Paul was getting
along finely, and had so far recovered as to he
able to hobble around on crutches ; but he was
so unfortunate, a few daps since, as to. trip
against something, when he fell, bursting open
the ligatures which bound the stump , of the
amputated limb, and undoing in a moment
the improvement which it had taken days to
accomplish. The shock which the little fel
low'S system received was a frightful one, and
be nearly sank under its effects, but after hov
ering two or three days between life and death
his spirits rallied, and he is now in a fair way
of recovery. Little Paul has many visitors,
and among others who called to see him late
ly was the Hon. Robert McKnight, member of
Congress from the XXII. District. The little
fellow appeared to bear 'his° sufferings like a
hero, and only seemed anxious skint his
chances of getting a pension' and a wooden leg
at the close of the war. He was assured that
both the pension and artificial leg 'would be
forthcoming at the proper time, and as he is a
brave and deserving youth, we have no doubt
hatever but they will. .
