[him Ornatu. Hamm Eta Palm) .
MAT 1860,--Ellea S., int. 28, single, never was very
strong. Two years ego she bad an attack of acute rheinna-
Insm, trom which she was confined to her bed for two weeks
and subseqenUy from &relapse far four more. Shehas been
well since then till Saler day, while engaged in house
Gleaning, She took cold, had pain in her back, felt cold,
hot had so decided chill. Two days later her ankles be
gan so swell, which wait followed by swelling of the
knee joints and of the hands. She has now dull
pain in her shoulders, and her knuckles are very tender,
red and painful ; both bands are affected, but the right
Is most sp. This, then, Is a case of acute rheumatism, or,
as it Is now fashionably enliedirbennalle fever. It is a
well remarked typical case. We will carehttly watch the
case, and from time to time call your attention to the vari
ous symptoms which present themselves. My chief object
in bringing her before you now, Is to call attention to •
remedy which has recently ben recommended in the
treatment of rheumatism. I mmn propylactine. Dr.
awenarius, of St. Petersburg, recommends it in the
highest terms, having derived great benefit front its use
In 260 oases which came under his care. Various com
mendatory testimonials respecting it have appeared In
our journals, and I propose therefore to give it another
trial I must confess lam always incredulous as to the
worth of new remedies, which are vaunted as specifies ;
but this comes to us recommended so highly, that we
are bound to give It a trial.
SAME CASE FOUR DAYS LATER !
MAT 28,1860.1 will now exhibit to you the patient for
whom I prescribed Propylamlne, and wa a then labor
ing under an attack of acute rheumetlem. She has
shadily taken it In doses of three grains every two hours
(Intermitting it at night,) The day alter you saw her, I
found her much more comfortable, better than she ex
pected to be for a week or more, Judging from her other
littera. (The patient now walked Into the room.) The
Improvement has steadily progressed, and you cannot
fall to notice a marked change in the appearance of her
Mints, which are new nearly all of their natural si z e.—
Thor far our experiment would have seemed very suc
cessful ; but, gentlemen, we must wait a little while be.
fore we can give a decided opinion as to what la to be
the result.
Here is another patient who was placed on the use of
-le same medicine on Sunday last; she has long boon
suffering from o !ironic rlieumatiant, and I found her at
that time with an acute attack supervening upon her
chronic affection. The wrists and knuckles were much
swollen and tense. She took the chloride of Propyla
mine in three grain doses every two bourn, and you will
perceive that the swelling or the Joints has mush dimin
ished.
THREE DAYS LATER 11
MAT 26, 1880.—This is the case of acute rheumatism
treated with propylamine, the first of those to which I
called your attention at our butt clinic,. Übe Is still very
comfortable, and Is now taking throe pains thrice daily.
In this case it has seemed to be followed by very sat
isfactory results. The second ado to which your atten
tion was called at oar lest lecture, has also continued to
do well. I will now bring before you a very Character
istic case of acute rheumallem, and if the result be eat.
factory, I think, as good jurymen, we snail Justly render
our verdict in favor of propylaMn
He is a seaman , seL 26, who was admitted a few days
ago. Has bad ociusetonal rheumatic pains, but not so as
to keep his bed, until eight days ago. The patne began
in his right knee, subsequently affected the left knee, and
later, the joints of the upper extremities. Thant joints
are all swollen, tense and tender. His tongue is furred ;
bls skin, at present dry, though there has been much
sweating. His pulse is MI and strong, and about 90.
Ile has now used propyitunine fbr twenty-four hours.
This gentlemanln what may bo called& strictly typical
case of acute rheumatism. There was exposure to cold
and wet, and this exposure is followed by • feeling of
coldness, severe articular pain, beginning, as It usually
does, In the lower Joints. There is fever and the profits&
sweating, so generally autendant on acute rheumatism.
I did not bring this patient beibre you with the Inten
tion of giving you a lecture on all the points consented
With rheumatism, but to again give a trial to the
new remedy we are testing, and to exhibit to you this
typical use, as I have called it, than which there co uld
not be a fairer opportunity for tatting the medicine in
question. We are, therefbre, avoiding the use of all
other medicines, even anodynes, that there may be no
misgivings as to which was the efficient remedy. You
shall see the use of a Mare clinic.
THE RESULT
A FAVORABLE VERDICT
Jinn% 1880.--The next of our convalescents 111 the
case of acute rheumatism before you at our allele at May
48th, which I then called a typical case, and which it
was remarked was a fair opportunity for testing the
worth of our new remedy, It was therefore steadily
given In three grain doses every two hours for four days.
The patient has got along very nicely, and is now able to
walk about, as you see. Ido not hesitate to sty that I
have nevea seen as severe • case of acute rheumatis m
so soon restored to health as this man has been, and
without being prepared to decide positive by as to the val
ue of the remedy we have used, I feel bound to eta to
that In the cases In which we have tried the tibloride co,
Propylandoe, the patients have regained thole health
much earlier than under the treatment ordinarily pur
sued. I wish gentlemen, you would yourselves try It,
and report the results.
For a full report of which the above la a eondensed
extract, see the Philadelphia Medical and Surgina' I Re
porter. Rle the report after a Mar trial by the beamed -
