Two years ago she had an attack of acute rheum lifillosh she was confined to her bed for two 'melts and subseeently from a relapse for four more. She has been well since then till last Safer day, while engaged In house cleaning, she took cold bad pain in her back, felt cold, hot had co decided chili. Two days later her ankles be gin so swell, which was followed by swelling of the knee joints and of the bands. She has now dull pain in her shoulders, and herb:tackles are very tender, rod and painful; both hands are affected, but the right le mos t so. This, then, is a case of acuterheurnathrm, or, as It is now fashionably called, rheumatic fever. his a W well remarked typical ease. e will carefully watch the case, and from lime to time call your attention to the vari ous symptoms which present themselves. illy chief object In bringing her before you now, is to call attention to a remedy wh ic h has recently been recommended in the treatment of rheumatism. I mean propykrattne. • Dr. awenarius, of St. Petersburg, recommends it In Use highest terms, having derived great benefit from its use in 260 easel Windt cline under his care. Various com mendatory testimonials respecting It have appeared in our journals, and I propose therefore to give it another trial I must confess lam always incredulous as to the worth of new remedies, which are vaunted as specilles ; but this comes to us recommended so highly, that we are bound to give it a trial. SAME CASE FOlOJi DAYS LATER 1 MAT 230.880..4 will now exhibit to you the patient for whom I prescribed PropylamLne, and was then labor ing under an attack of acute rheumatism. She has steadily taken it in doses of three grains every two hours (intermitting it at night.) The day after you saw her, I found her much more comfertable, better than she ex peeled to be for a week or more, Judging frith her other attack. (The patient now walked into the room.) The improvement bas steadily progressed, and you cannot fail to notice a marked change in the appearance of her Joints, which are new nearly all of their natural site far our experiment would have seemed very 111113- canna! ; but, gentlemen, we must wait a little while be fore we can give a decided opinion as to what is to be the result. Here la another patient who was placed on the use of ...is same medicine on Sunday last ; she has long been coffering from c tweet° rheumatism, and I round her at that time with, an acute attack supervening upon her Monett, affection. The weals and knuckles were mach Swollen and tense. She took the chloride of Propyla mine in three grain down every two hours, and you will percalvelbat the swelling of the joints has much dimin ished. THREE DAYS LATER I I MAY 26,1890.—This is the case of acute rheumatism treated with propylettilne, the drat of these to which I called your attention at our last clinic. She Is still very comfortable, and Is now taking three grains thrice daily. In this case It has seems' to be Oillowed by very sat isfactory resells. The second case to which your atten tion wits called at our last lecture, has also continued to do weir Iwlilnow bring before you a very character hide case of souls ilieumatiam, and if the result be sat. factory, I think; in - good jerimen, we shall justly render our verdict In favor of propylemhi • • He WA seaman, pit. 26, *be wee admitted a few dayv ago. Has had ecansional rheumatic pains, but not so es to keep his bed, until eight days ago. The pales began in his right knee, subsequently affected the left knee, and later, the Mints of the upper extremities. These Joints are all swollen, tense and tender. His tongue is furred ; ills skin, aoprisent dry, though there, has been much sweating. His pulse fatal] and strong, and about 60. He has now used propylandne Sir twenty-four hours. This gentleman is what may be called a strictly typical, case of acute rheumatism. There was exposure to cold • and wet, and this exposure is followed by a feeling of coldness, severe articular pain, beginning, as it usually does, in the lower Joints. There is fever and the profuse sweating, so generally mitendant on soma rheumatism. I did not bring this patleut betide you with the I attri tion of giving yea a lecture on all the points connected with rheumatism, but to again give a trial to the new remedy we are testing, and to exhibit to you this typical case, as I have called it, than Which there co uld not bo a fairer opportunity for testing the medicine in question. We are, therefore, avoiding the use of all other medicines, even anodynes, that thorn may ho no misgivings as to which was the ellicleut remedy. Ton shall see the case of a Mare clinic. THE RESULT. A FAVORABLE VERDICT Justs 9, 1860.—The next of our convalescents Is the case of acute rheumatism before you at oar clinic of May which I then called a typical case, and which It was remarked was a fair opportunity for testing the worth of our new remedy, It was therefore steadily given In Wee grain doses every two hours for four days. The patient has got along very nicely, and is now able to walk about, as you see. Ido not hesitate to Cuy that I have novas seen as severe a case of acute rheumatism so soon restored to health as this man has been, and withoutheing prepared to decide positive by as to the val. no of the remedy we have used, I feel bound to state that In the cases In which we have tried the Chloride o Propylamine, the patients have regained their health numb °Miler than under the treatment ordlnanly per sued. I wish gentlemen, you would yourselves try It, and report the remits. For s, full rimer' of *hick the above is a eondensed ettntct, see the Philadelphia Mafiosi and 8400=1 Be porter.
