(Flo: Onnam Hoserral RIPOIVELJ
Mar 19, 1880,—Ellea S., wt. 28, single, never was very
strong. Two years ago she had an attack of acute rheuma
tiam, from which she was confined to ber bed for two weeks
and subset:many from arelapse fer four more. She has been
well Sinee then till Wit Saturday, While engaged in house
cleaning, she took cOlel., had pain in her back, felt cold,
hot bad so decided chill. Two days later her ankles be
gan so swell, which was followed by swelling of the
knee jomts and of the hands. She has now dull
pain in her shoulders, and her knuckles are very tender,
red and painful ; both hands are affected, but the right
is most so. This, then, is a case of acute rheumatism, or,
as it is now fashionably called, rheumatic fever. It is a W
well remarked typical case. e will carefully watch the
case, and from time to time call your attention to the vari
ous symptoms which present themselves. My chief object
in bringing tier before you now, is to call attention to a
remedy which has recently been recommended in the
treatment of rheumatism. I m propyhonine. Dr.
Awenarius, of St. Petersburg, recommends it in the
highest terms, having derived great oeneflt from its use
in 260 cases which came.uuder his care. Various com
mendatory testimonials respecting it - have appeared in
our journals, and I propose therefore to give it another
trial. I mast confess lam always meredulous as to the
worth of new remedies, which are vaunted as specifies ;
but this comes to us recommended so highly, that we
are bound to give it a trial.
SAME CASE FOUR DAYS LAMB I
MAY 23, 1880.—I will now exhibit to you the patient for
whom I prescribed Propylamine, and was then labor
ing under AEI attack at acute rheumatism. She has
steadily taken it in doses of three grates every two hours
(intermitting it at night.) The day after you saw her, I
found her much more comfortable, better than she ex.
petted to be for a week or more, judging from her other
ethics. (the patient now walked into the room.) The
improvement has steadily progressed, and you cannot
fail to notice a marked change in the appearance of her
mints, which are new nearly all of their natural size .
toes far our experiment would have seemed very suc
cessful ; but, gentlemen, we must wait a little while be-
Fore we can give a decided opinion as to what is to be
the result.
Here is another patient who was placed on the use of
—fz same medicine on Sunday last q 41:Ls has long been
suffering from c nronic rheumatism, and I found her at
that time with en acute attack supervening upon her
Chrouic affection. The wrists and knuckles wore much
MOND and touse. She took the chloride of Propyla
mine in three grain doses every two hours, and you will
perceive that the swelling of the joints has much dimin
ished.
THREE DAYS LATER !I
MAT 26, 1860.—This is the case of acute rheumatism
treatee with propylamino, the first of those to Which I
called your attention at our lest clinic hhe is still very
comfortable, and is now tatting three grains thrice daily.
In this case it hes seemed to be followed by very sat
letectory resets. The second cme to which your atten
tion was called at our last lecture, has also continued to
do wel r I will now bring before you a very character
istic case of acute rheumatism, and If the result 130 eat
factory, I think, as good jurymen, we shall justly render
our verdict in favor of propylamin
Ho is a seaman, set. 28, who was admitted a few, days
ago. Has hail occasional rheumatic pains, but not so as
to keep his bed, until eight days ago. The pains began
In his right knee, subsequently affected the left knee, and
later, the joints of the upper extremities. These joints
are all swollen, tense and tender. His tongue is furred '
-
his skin, at present dry, though there has been much
sweating. His pulse is full and strong, and about 90.
He has now used propylamine for twenty-four hours.
This gentleman is What may be called a strictly typical
cage of acute rheumatism. There was exposure to cold
and wet, and this exposure is followed by a eieling of
ccidness„ severe articular pain, beginning, as it usually
door, in the lower joints. There is fever and the profuse
sweating, so generally atttendant on acute. rheumatism.
I did not bring this patient before yon with the titan
lion of giving you a lecture on all the points connected
with rheumatism, but to again give a trial to tte
new remedy we are testing, and to exhibit to
. yon this
typical case, as I have called it, than which there co Ind
not be a fairer opportunity for testing the medicine in
question. We are, therefore, avoiding the use of all
other medicines, even anodynes, chat there may be no
misgivings as to which was the efficient remedy. You
shall sae the case of a future clinic.
THE RESULT
A FAVORABLE VERDICT
June, 1880.—The next of our eon valeseenui le the
ease of acute rheumatism before you at our chide in May
26th, which I then called a typical case, and which it
was remarked was a fair opportunity for testing the
worth of our new remedy, It was therefore steadily
given in three grain doses every two hours for four days.
The patient hes got along very nicely, and is now able to
:talk about, as you see. Ido not hesitate to sty that I
nave nevea seen as severe a Me of acute rheu•uatism
so soon restored to health as this man has been, and
without being prepared to decide positive by as to the val
ue of the remedy we have used, I feel bound to eta to
that in the cases in which we have tried tee Chloride o
Propyiattdoe, the patients hevo regained their health
much earlier than under the treatment ordinarily .pur
sued. I wish gentlemen, you would yourselves try it,
and report the results.
For a full report of which the above is a °endowed
extract, see the Philadelphia Medical and Surgical Re
porter. It is the report after a fair trial by the best mod
teal authority in this country, and makes it unnecessary
to give numerous certificates from astonished doctors
and rejoicing patients.
