PENNSYLVANIA HOSPITAL [him °mica, Hamm. RzPOR2B.I Mar 39, 1869,—Ellat S., M. 28, single, never was very strong. Two years ago she bad an attack or sorde rheum. tism, trom whit:Mahe wes confined to her bed for two weeks and subseqently from arelapse for four more. She has been well since then till last , Be= day, while engaged in house cleaning, she took cold, had pain in. Bet back, felt cold, hot bad so decided *hill. Two days later her ankles be gan so swell, which was followed by , swelling of the knee joints and of the hands. She has now dull pain In her shoubjers, and ber knuckles are very tender, red and painful; Volt bends are affected, but the right tamest so. This, then, Is case of acute rheumatism, or, as it is now fashionably called, rheumatic fever. It is a well remarked typical case We will carefully watch the case, and from time to time call your attention to the vari ous symptoms which present themselves. My chief object In bringing her before you now, is to call attention to a remedy which has recently bean recommended in the treatment of rheumatism. I mean ?randomise. Dr. awenarlus of St. Petersburg, recommends it in the highest terms,i haying derived great benefit from Its -use in 260 cases which came under his care. Various' com mendatory, testimonials respecting it have appeared In our journals, and I propose therefore to give it' another trial. I most confess lam always incredulous as to the worth of new remedies, which are vaunted as specifies ; but this comes to os recommended so highly, that we are bound to give It a trial. SAME CASE FOUR DAYS LATER I SS, 1 . 1360.--I will now exhibit to you the patient for whom I prescribed Propylamine, and wa a then labor ing under an attack el acute rheumatism. She has steadily taken It In demos or three grains every two hours (Intermitting it at night.) The day after you saw her, I found her much more comfortable, better than she ex pected to be-for a week or more, Judging from her other attack. (The patient now walked into the room.) The Improvement has steadily progressed, and you cannot foil to notice a marked change In the appearance of her joints, which are new nearly all of their natural Mae.— Thar far our experiment would have seemed very suc cessful ; but, gentlemen, we must watt a little while be fore we can give a decided opinion as to what is to be the result. Here Is another patient who was placed on the use of _is same medicine On Sunday last ; she bas lung been suireflug from o Menlo rheumatism, and I found her at that time with an acute attack supervening upon her chronic adkohon. The wrists and knuckles were much swollen and tense. She took the chloride or Propyla mine In three grain doses every two hours, and you will perceive that the swelling of the joints ba s much dlmin hiked. THREE DAYS LATER 11 MAT 26, 1860.—This Is the case of acute rheumatism treated with propylamine, the WA of OM to which I called your attention at our last clinic, she is still very comfortable, and is now taking three grains thrice daily. In this ease it has seemed to be followed by very sat islasstory resets. The second c.,se to which your atten tion was called at our last lecture, has din continued to do welt I wilenow bring betbre you a vary character istic case of acute rheumatism, and if the result be sat factory, I think, as good jurymen we shall justly render our verdict In favor at propylamin lie is a seaman, set. 2IJ, who was admitted a few days ago. Ilan bad occasiona l rheumatic pain!, but not so ae to keep his bed, until eight days ago. The pains began In his right knee, subsequently %acted the left knee, and later, the bolas of the upper extremities. These joints are all swollen, tense and tender. His tongue is furred ; his skin, at present dry, though there • hait been much sweating. His pulse With and strong, and about 90, Ile has now used propylamine Air twenty-four hours. This gentleman Is what may be called a strictly typical ease of acute rheumatism. There was exposure to cold and wet, and this exposure is followed by a baling of °oldness, severe articular pain, besimeing, as it usually doe; in the lower joints. There is fever sod the protium sweating, so generally attendant on acute rheumatism. I did net bring this patient babes you with the inten tion of giving.you a lecture en all the points connected with rheumatism, but to again give a trial to the cew malady we are testing, and to exhibit to you thle typical am, as have Gated it, than which there co hid not be r fairer opportunity for testing the medicine In question. We are, therefore, avoiding the use of all other modlolses, evert woodpile, that thero may be no misgivings as to whiehlwas, the efficient You shell see the case of a future clinks. THE RESULT. A FAVORABLE VERDICT Josue, 1860.--The next of our couvaleacents is the case ul acute rheumatism -before you at our allele of May Nth, which 1 then millet a typical case, and which It was remarked was a fair opportunity fur Aeatiug the worth Cl oar new remedy. It was therefore steadily given In three grain dome every two hours for fbur days. The patient has got Meng very uloely, and la new able to walk about, Be you see. Ide not hesitate to sty that I have neves seen as severe a ease of acute rheumatism so soon restored to health as this man has been, and without being prepared to decide positive by ac to the val ue of the remedy we have used, I feel bound to eta le„ glut iu the cases lu which we have tried the Chloride o Propylandue, the patieuts have regalms.l their health much earlier than under we treatment ordinarily par ched. I wish gentlemen, you would - your-sell/ea - 'try it, and report the resells. Inca toll report of which the above to a eondeused extract, see Oa Philadelphia Medical an/ Surgical Re porter. It is the report after a fhb trial by the best med. loal authority in this oottutry, and makes it unnecessary to give numerous certificates from astoulahed doctors and rejoicing patients.
