PENNSYLVANIA HOSPITAL
(Flom OFFICIAL HOSPITAL REPORTS.]
Ley 38, 1860,—Ellen S., set. 28, single., never was very
strong. Two years ago she had an attack of acute rheuma
tism, from which she was confined to her bed tor two weeks
and subseoeutiy trout a relapse for four more. She has been
well since then till last Satur day, while engaged in house
cleaning, she took cold, had pain in her back, felt cold,
not had no decided chill. Two days later her ankles be
gan so swell, which was follow, l by swelling of the
knee jo'o l / 3 and of the hands. She has now dull
pain in her shoo Ideriti, and her knuckles are very tender,
red and painful ; both lianas are affected, but the right
is most so. This, then, is a case of acute rheumatism, or,
us it is now fashionably called, rheumatic fever. nig a
well remarked typical case We will carefully watch the
case, spa from time to time call your attention to the vat.
one symptoms which present themselves. My chief object
In bringing her before you now, is to call attention to a
remedy which has recently been recommended in the
treatment of roeumarlam. lon 21411 propyl amine Dr.
awenarius, of St. Petersburg, recommends It in the
highest terms, having derived groat °cook from its use
in 150 cases which came under hie care. Various com
mendatory testimonials respecting it hsve appeared in
our journals, and I propose therefore to give it mailer
trial. I must confess lam always increilelous.as to the
Worth of new remedies, which aro vaunted as specifies ;
out this comes to 116 reconitheuded so highlyt-itiat. we
are bound to give it a trial.
SAME CASE FOUR DAYS LATER
L: DUI '22, 1880.-1 will now exhibit to you the patient fur
whom I prescribed Propytamum, and wa s then labor
ing under an attack of acute rheumatism. Site has
steadily taken It in doses of three grates every two hours
(Intermitting it at night.) The day after you saw her,
found her much more comfortable, better than she ex
pected to be for a week or more, judgtog from her other
attacx. (the patient now walked into' t Ito room.) The
improvement has steadily progressed, and you cannot
fall to notice a marked change in tile apttearmice of her
Johns, which are new nearly all of their natural size.—
Thus far our experiment would have seemed very suc
cessful ; but, gentlemen, .we must wait a little while be
tore we eau give a decided opinion as to what is to be
the result.
Here is another patient who was placed on the use of
--It sumo medicine on Sunday lasi ; she has long been
- sin - feline from° uronic rheum-then', and I found her at
that time with an acute attack supervening upon her
chronic affection. The wrist; and knuckles were much
swollen uud te, so. She took the eidoride of Pro pyla
mine in three grain doses every two liners, aud you will
perceive that the swelling of the, loiute has much dimin
ished.

He lea seaman, set. 26, who was admitted a few days

in his right knee, subsequently alfeeted the left knee, and
later, the muds of the upper extremities. These joints,
are all swollen, sauce and tender. tits tongue is furred ;

This gentleman is what may be called a eirictly typ foal

was remarked was a fair opportunity for testing the
