The Recent Order in Reference to Telegraphic

Colonel Corooran to be Exohnnged
Weintrunrox, May 18.
The Senate to-day confirmed tile nomination
of Brevet Major qeneral Wool to be Major
General of Army for gallant conduct on the
tenth of May, in taking the city of Norfolk
and for other gallant services ; also of Charles
Chase as postmaster at Winchester, Tirgbilla.
The mails for New 9rleans will be made at
New York, to be forwarded by sea on every
steamer which may leave for that port.—
Therefore, the communication between these
cities will be frequent. Postmasters are re
quested to forward all mail matter for New
Orleans to the New York post office.
Isaac Newton, at present connected with the
Agricultural branch of the Patent Office, has
heed nominated by the President as Commis
sioner of Agriculture, under the recently passed
law establishing a Department of Apiculture.
Benjamin Wood not wishing to consume the
time of the House in the delivery of hie speech
on the condition of the Union, - obtained
permission to print it. He says it has been
left to him to speak-the first conciliatory word
in behalf of his suffering countryman. There
were gentlemen within his vision whose aworn
purpose and greatest'desire, paramount even
to the preservation of threpublic is emanci
pation. They first appl (U the torch, and are
now more busy than ever
- with throwing fresh
fuel to the flame.
Should history ever trace, which God forbid,
the record of this country's rain that page will
seem the strongest to those that read which
tell of the mallows and wickedness of the arch
fanatics of abolitionism. In the dark recesses
of the temple of infamy the gloomiest niches
will bear the inscription of their names.
In place of making the negro question the
subject-matter of debate, Congress should take
into earnest and solemn consideration some
expedient for securing peace. He believed that
success would crown their efforts. An honora

peoprialudi maize that it is only the infamo us
design to sttengthen the anti-slavery movement
which prevents an effort to obtain peace, wo to
the chiefs of the abolition party.
But words are thrown away on stubborn fa
naticism. He appealed to the loftier feelings
which should pervade humanity, to the lovers
of our common country, we want a union of
sovereigns not of subjects.
In conclusion ne urges and entreats Congress
to adopt some measure which may bring about
a cessation of hostilities with a view to media
tion. Adjourned till. Monday.
On inquiry at the War Department it is as
certained that the order of the assistant super
visor of dispatches at Cincinnati to the operator
at Cairo was not issued by the military super
viror at. Washington. It was issued by the
assistant supervisor at Cincinnati under a mis
apprehension of instructions received from the
military supervisor which were intended to
stop forwarding from Cairo to the newspapers
of false and improper military intelligence and
sensational dispatches relating to military
matters, such as had, on several occasions,
created public anxiety without cause and of
which great complaint has justly been made.
There has been no change in the orders of the
Department, and there is no intention to with
hold any authentic information from the pub
lic, except such as could not be published with
out embarrassment to military operations and
danger to our armies.
The Secretary of War, upon the application
of Representative Ely, s ordered the release

Aided by Mr. Ely they have - succeeded.

ditiogfrom Pulaski, supported by Col. Little's
ex .:1;:ton from Athens, entered Rogersville,
driviagille enemy across the Tennessee and
deitroyidg &portion of their ferry boats.
Having learned-of the approach of Colonel
Little'aforces the enemy succeeded in removing
their artillery, baggage and stores before the
arrival of-Gen,-N-egley.
I expected an obstbiate defence at the passage
of the Elk river and accompanied in person
Col. Little's expedition, but without crossing.
The enemy, as usual, fled at our approach.
I ordered on yesterdayan expedition to move
promptly from Rogersville to seise the bridge
across Shad creek and the ferry below the
month of the same stream. This duty has
• , n promptly executed and the ferry and
ridge are ours.
No more troops will enter from that region,
and we have now upon this side twelve or
fifteen hundred of the enemy in bands of three
or four hundred, whom we will endeavor to
hunt down and destroy or capture.
The gunboat which I have extemporised will
be ready for service to-day, and I will soon be
able to pay my respects to the enemy in the
eastern side of this region under my command.
