[rEcrm Ommu HaSenAL Exponsd
MIT 10, 1860,—Elles S., set. 28, single, never was very
strong. Two years ago she bad an attack of acute rhenem
tism, trom whloh she was confined to barbed for two weeks
and subseriently from arelapse far four more. Sheila been
well since then 1111 last Suter day, while engaged in house
defusing, she took cold, bad pain in her back, felt cold,
hot bad no decided chill. Two days later her ankles be
ran so swell, which was famed by swelling of the
knee joints and of the hands. She has now dull
plan in her shoulders, and her knuckles are very tender,
red and painful ; both bands are affected, but th e right
Malt so. This, then, is a case of acute r heumatism, or,
as It Is new fashionably called, rheumatic fever. Ills a
well remarked typical ease. We will carefully watch the
oasts, and from Ume to time call your attention to the vari
ous symptoms which present themselves. My chief object
ln bringing her before you now, is to call attention to •
remedy which has recently been recommended in the
treatment of rheumatism. I mean propylassilne. Dr.
Awenarlutt, of St. Petersburg, recommends it in the
highest terms, having derived great benefit from Its use
In 250 cases which came under his care. Various com
mendatory testimonials respecting It have appeared in
Our journals, and I propose therefore to give It another
trial. I must confess lam always incredulous as to the
worth of new remedies, which are vaunted as enmities
but this comes to us recommended so highly, that we
ire bound to give it a trial.
SAME CASE FOUR DAYS LATER I
friday 28,1880.—1 will now exhibit to you the patient far
whom I prescribed Propylamine, and was then labor
ing under an attack of acute rheumatism. She has
steadily taken it in doses of three grains every two hours
(intermitting it at night.) The day after you saw her, I
found her much more comfortable, better than she ex
pected to be for a week or more, judging from her other
Meet. (The patient now walked into the room.) The
Improvement Ms steadily progressed, and you cannot
fall to notice a marked change in the appearance of her
joints, which are now nearly all of their natural size.—
Thee far o d e experiment would have seemed very suc
cessful ; but, gentlemen, we must wait a little while be
tbre we can give a decided opinion as to what is to be
the result.
Here is another patient who was placed on the use of
the same medicine on Sunday last ; she has long been
searing from o hronic rheumatism, and I found her at
that thne 'with an acute attack supervening upon her
OhrOnlo affection. The wrists and knuckles were much
swollen and tense. She took the chloride of Propyla
mine in three grain doses every two hours, and yon will
perceive that the swelling of the joints ha s' much dimin-
Med.
THREE DAYS LATER 11
Mat 243, 1860.-7111 s Is the cue of acute rheumatism
treated with propylamine, the first of those to which I
called your attention at our last clinic. She is still very
comfortable, and is now taking three grains thrice daily.
In this case It has seemed to be followed by very eat
tsfutory resells. The second Otte to which your atten
tion was called at our last lecture, has also continued to
do well I will now bring before you a very character
istic case of acute rheumatism, and if the result be sat
factory, I think, as good Jurymen, we shall Justly render
our verdict in favor of propylamind
He Is a Seaman, let. 26, who was admitted a few days
ago. Has hat moutons' rheumatic pains, but not so as
to keep his bed, until eight days ago. The pains began
in his right knee, [subsequently affected the left knee, and
later, the joints of the upper extremities. These Joints
are all swollen, tense and tender. His tongue if furred ;
his skin, at present dry, though there has been mach
sweating. His pulse latell and strong, and about 90.
He has now need propylamine for twenty-four hours.
This gentleman is what may be called& strictly typical
OW of saute rheumatism. There was exposure to cold
and wet, and this exposure is followed by a feeling of
eoldnesa, severe articular pain, beginning, as it usually
doss, in the lower joints. There is fever end the prattle
sweating, so generally attleadant on acute rheumatism.
lAN net bring this patient Wore yon with the intim
' Ilion of giving you elf:chin, on all the points connected
with rheumatism, but to again give a trial to the
new remedy we are testing, and to exhibit to you this
tiptoed cue, as I have called it, than widish there or old
not be a fairer opportunity for testing the medicine hi
question. We are, therefore, avoiding the use of all
ether medicines, even anodynes, that there may be no
shall
uto which was the efficient remedy, You
seethe ease of a future clinic.
THE RESULT.
A FAVORABLE VERDICT
18130.—The next of our convalescents is the
sass of acute rheumatism before you at our clinic of May
Nth, which I then called a typical ease, and which It
was remarked was a fair opportunity for testing the
worth et our new remedy, It was therefore steadily
given in three grain doses every two hours for four days.
Thapstient has got along very nicely, and is now able to
walk about, es you see. Ido not hesitate to sty that I
Wm naves seen as severe a case of acute rheumatism

us of the remedy we have used, I feel bound to state

much earlier than under the treatment ordinarily pur
sued. I what gentlemen, you would yourselves try it,
