[rim Oman. Rooms Ramis.)
MAY 1660,-1/lien S., int. 26, single, never was very
strong. Two Years ago she had en attack of sante rheum
tism, irom which she was confined to her bed for two weeks
and substreenLy from arelapse for four more. She has been
well sines then till last Bator day, while engaged in house
cleaning, &betook cold, had pain in her back, felt cold,
hot had no decided chill Two days later her ankles be
gan in swell, which was followed by swelling of the
knee joints and of the hands. She has now dull
pule In her shoulders, and her knuckles are very tender,
red and painful ; both hands are affected, but the right
is meet so. This, then, is a cue of acute rheumatism, or,
as it is now fashionably Galled, rheumatic fever. Ills a
well remarked typical case. We will carefully watch the
ease, and from time to Ulna call your attention to the vari
ous symptoms which present themselves. My chief object
in bringing her before you now, is to.call attention to •
remedy which has recently been recommended in the
treatment of rheumatism. I mienpropylmnine. Dr.
Awenarlus, of at. Petersburg, recommends it In the
highest terms, haying derived great pelmet from tie use
in 260 oases which came under his care. Various com
mendatory testimonials respecting It have appeared in
onrjournale, and I propose therefore to give It another
trial. I mast cenfeas lam always incredulous as to the
worth of new remedies, which are vaunted as specifies ;
but this comes to us recommended so highly, that we
ars bound to give it a trial.
SAME CASE FOUR DAYS LAMB 1
apt 1860.—1 will now exhibit to you the patient for
whom I prescribed Propylamlne, end wa s then labor
ing under an attack of saute rheumatism. She has
Weedily taken it in doses of three pains every two hours
(intermitting it at night.) The day after you saw her,
found her much more comfortable, better than she ex
pected to be for a week or more, Judging from her other
Mama. (The patient now walked into the room.) The
Improvement Ue steadily progressed, and you cannot
fail 10 notice a marked change in the appearance of her
joints, which are now nearly all of their natural sise.—
Thus far our experiment would have seemed very sun
awful; but, gentlemen, we must wait a Ms while be.
fore we can give a decided opinion as to what is to be
the result.
Here is another patient who was placed on the use of
the came medicine on Sunday last; she has long been
suffering from o tweet:, rheumatism, and I found her at
that time with an acute attack supervening upon her
chronic affmtion. The wrists and knuckles were mush
swollen and tense. Sbe took the chloride of Propyla
mine In three grain doses ovary two bouts, and you will
pensive that the swelling of the joints has mutt di rain
hiked.
THREE DAYS LATER 11
Ilar 26, 1860.---Tbis Is the case of acute rheumatism
treated with propylamine, the drat of those to which
called your attention at our last clinic. She Is still very
comfortable, and Is now taking three grains thrice daily.
In this case It has seemed to be followed by very sat
isfactory reedits. The second else to which your atten
tion was called at our last lecture, has also continued to
do welt- I will now bring before you a very character
istic case of acute ihaumatitina, and if the result be sat
dtotary, I think, as good Jurymen we anal! justly render
our verdict in favor of privy iambi
He Is a seaman, tat. 26, who was admitted a few days
ago. Has had ocaaalonal rheumatic pains, but not so as
to keep his bed, until eight days ago. The pains began
in his right knee, subsequently erected the left knee, and
later, the loints of the upper extremities. These joints
are all swollen, tense and tender. the tongue is furred ;
his skin, at present dry, though there has been much
sweating. His pulse Is fall and strong, and about so.
He has now used propylamine for twenty-four hours.
This gentleman is what may be called a strictly typical
eme of acute rheumatism. There was exposure to cold
mad *et, and this exposure Is followed by a feeling of
°oldness, severe &Monter pain, beginning, as it usually
does, in the lower joints. There is fever and the produie
sweating, so generally 'attendant on acute rheumatism.
1 did not bring this patient before you with the i nten
lion of giving you a lecture on all the points connected
with- rheumatism, but to again give 'a trial to tee
,rein erg dr. are. testing, and to exhibit to .youthet
.typi-eittm Ito / have cau.d..ii, um. which there cc uld
eel De ,a Mrs, opportunity for testing the medicine in
question. We are, therefore, avoiding the use of aU
other medicines, even anodynes, that there May be no
Misgivings as to which was the cadent remedy. Yon
shad see the case 01 a future clinic.
THE RESULT.
A FAVORABLE VERDIOT.
Jonah, 1860.—The neat of our convalescents la the
eau 'Of acute rheumatism before you at our climb ot May
16th, whtith I then milled a typical case, and which is
was remarked was a fair opportunity for testing the
worth ot our new remedy, It win therefore steadily
[lvan In three grain done every.two hours for four days.
The patient hat got along very nicely, and is now able to
walk about, as you see. I de, not hesitate to say that I
have Musa seen as severe a case of acute rhen.hattlin
so soon restored to health as this man has been, nod
without being prepared to decide pointy° ay as to , the val.
as of the remedy we have used, I feel bound to eta to
that In the cues In which we have tried the Chloride o
