Coogreed and five hundred and twr my-one field
o fficers, bays petitioned the Secretary of War to
grant a butter ration to the soldiers. _it is said
that the ration will be granted. We fear , the
soldiers will not piss it much when they get

BAP HONEY —The issue of small bills by the
backs of this State has given the rascally coun
terfeiters a larger field for the di9lay of their
thievish ingenuity. Every fort-night there
seems to be a new addition tcl floating 'stock of
scoundreliew, and the public cannot be too
cautious in receiving bank notes. The min-
D ing rogues who manage to elude the vigilance
of detectives, are always careful to anticipate
the publications of Peterson and Hodge, and to
put into circulation a fresh batch 'simultane
onaly with the Issue of the Detectors Hance,
these are no guide till after the public have
realized the infliction of a new swindle.

ROBBERY AT TSB DXPOT.-.4. ilarrisburger the
Vidim.—Mr. James Williams, of this city, one
of the Messengers of the United State@ Senate,
arrived here on a brief visit to his friends, in the
2 o'clock train from Baltimore Saturday morn
ing, and while leaving the car, or shortly after
he stepped upon the platform, at the depot in
our city, he had the misfortune of being re
lieved of a poise of money containing the sum
of one hundred and eighteen dollars, by some
representative of the light-fingered gentry, who
it is believed also came a passenger by the same
train. Of course, in the bustle and confusion
attending the arrival of the train, and the pre
vailing darkness, it was impossible to detect the
thief, who, it is believed, proceeded in the next
We westward. Mr. Williams notified the
police of his lose, but under the circumstances,
it 16 scarcely possible that the thief will be ar
rested, and, even if arrested, still more so that'
the money will be recovered.

Swurmextox has Iran calculated
that a hawk will fly not less than 150 miles in
an hour. Major Cartwright, on the coast of ,
Labrador, found, by, reptiatri , observation s, that
the fliglit of' en eider duCk*lti c At - the rate of
90 miles an hour. - The flight of the commen
crow is nearly 26 mills an .hour ; and Spillait-
Rani found that of the swallow to
. be 92 miles,
while he ' conjectures that the rapidity of ttie
swift is nearly three timea greater. A falcon,
Lelonging to Henry IV., of France, flew from
Fountainblean to Malta, in less thin 24 - hours,'
the distance being 1,850; and it is probable
that his flight was about 75 miles an hour; ae
such binds fly ,in. the day time only. These
facts .show how easily birds can accomplish
their extensive migrations, especially when we
consider theta favorable wind materially helps
them on their voyage.

TER DEATH 01 PAYMASTER Caas . E. HAmmoirn.
In our afternoon edition of Friday, we briefly
announced the arrival of the remains of Assist
ant Paymaster Hammond, of the 11. S. gunboa t
i
Sciota, and their interment at the cemetery neer
this city. We have heard, since then, the pai
deniers of the sad accident, which has caused so
much grief to his large circle of relatives and
friends. Mr. Hammond. was ordered to the
Mote in December last, and sent to the Gulf qf
Mexico, the vessel forming a part of the blocka
ding squadron in the Gulf. On the 26th qf
February he went to his berth to get his revol
ver, and in drawing it from under his pillow it
discharged, and the ball passed through his
body, causing his death in forty-eight hours:—
He at onto realised thatthe wound was mortal.
Surgeon M'Sherry, of the Sciota, and Fleet
Surgeon Potty., and Surgeon Pile, of the Water
Witch, were constantly with him, doing all tha l i t
medical skill and science could afford. Fleet
Chaplain Steward, of the Niagara, was also with
•
him, administering to him the consolation of
religion. Capt. Donelson, and other officers of
the Sciota, were unceasing in their attentions to
him. He died full of hope and confidence. In
the language of an officer of the ship, who was
constantly with him, "He had endeared himself
to every one by his gallantry arin officer, by
his humanity and unselfishness, and by hbr
Christian heroism. Every one itived him, for.
he was as brave as he was generous. He did
what he thought was his d uty al ways and feared
nothing." His remains came home in the Govt
eminent steamer , -Rhode bland, arid arrived
here on the' evening of the 20th inst.,
partied by his clerk, Mr. Chas. H. Ferries. Hi
