Salnrflay Al ternoon, March 22, 1862,
LEMBS TOR THE PRNNSYLVANIA RESSRVIS. -
L tters intended for the Pennsylvania Reserves,
for the present, should be addressed as hereto
fore, to the Washington City Poet Office.
A Burro RATlON.—Neatly every member of
c o ogres, and five hundred arrd twenty-one field
officers, have petitioned the Secretary of War to
grant a butter ration to the soldiers. It Is said
that the ration will be granted. We fear the
loldierB will not prize it much when they get
it. Rancid butter will be no great treat, and
fresh butter will be out of the question.
BAD Dieser —The isme of small bills by the
SAL' of this State has given the rascally coun
terfeiters a larger field for the display of their
thievish Ingenuity. Every fort-night there
seems to be a new addition to floating stock of
a ccuthlrelism, and the public cannot be too
cautious In receiving bank notes. The cun
ning r ogues who manage to elude the vigilance
of detectives, are always careful to anticipate
the publications of Peterson and Hodge, and to
put into circulation a fresh batch simultaue
°ay with the issue of the Detectors Hence,
these are no guide till after the public have
realized the infliction of a new swindle.

HOBBIES AT THII DIEPOT.-A Earriaborger firs
Tretirn.—Mr. James Williams, of this city, one
of the Messengers of the United States Senate,
arrived here on a brief visit to his friends, in
the two o'clock train from Baltimore this morn
ing, and while leaving the car, or shortly after
he stepped upon the platform, at the depot in
our city, be bad the misfortune of being re
lie•ved of a purse of money containing the sum
of one hundred and eighteen dollars, by some
representative of the light-fingered gentry, who
it is believed also came a I assenger by the same
train. Of course, in the bustle and confusion
attending the arrival of the train, and the pre
vailing darkness, it was impossible to detect till;
thief, who, It is believed, proceeded in the next
train westward. Mr. Williams notified the
police of his loss, but under the circumstances,
it h scarcely possible that the thief will be ar
rested, and, even if arrested, still more so that
the money will be recovered. •
Ircruct—The third lecture of the muse in

within and without the walls, There will also
be shown a large ground plan of the city, nu
merous maps, life size paintings of Eastern cos

The description of these sacred and interest
ing Renee by an eye witness, will produce, by
the aid of the paintings and mem' more vivid
and lasting impression than could be derived
iron reading many books upon the aubject.
The lecture will commence at seven. and a
quarter o'clock.

DREW OF AN OW Hoarse.—" Uncle Jared
Robinson," between 80 and 90

lately found dead - in hie bed, (without sickness,
previously,) at his eon's on the river just above
Tunkbannock, Pa. He is said US have slain
500 wolves, and a "proportion" of other "var

out alone, for days, after game, wiiich brought
him quite a livelihood. We are not aware
that his adventures have had a historian.
Tan VERNAL Equutox.—The vernal equinox
set in yesterday morning, and for two or three
days at least we may expect •the usual rough
and boisterous weather which generally marks
this period of the year. The days and

world, &thing which does not occur again until
the 28d of September, when the sun enters the
first point of Libra, and they become again of
the same length.

A Bra throw.--They sometimes get big snows
way down east in *eine, nor do they seem to
be confined to any particular season. Last
Monday night a week, says the Postland Ad
vertiser a hOuse at Mixican Corner, occupied . by
two families, was so completely submerged in
snow that in the morning nothing of it could
be seen. The inmates attempted to escape by
tearing boards from the gable end of the house
but did not succeed in making their exit, and
they were obliged to remain in that position
until the neighbors gathered to dig them out.
By tunnelling forty feet threugh the snow the
blockaded fitmilies were released.

, It
seems that our previous statement in reference
to the recovery of the money was premature.
It was only recovered last night under the
floor of an old stable in Sunbury, Northumber

having accompanied the officer to that place
and pointed out the spot where he tad hid it.

, Very respectfully,
Your obedient servant,
P. H. WATSON,Aeallalec'y of War,
Swirntrass os BIBDS.—It has been calculated
that a hawk will fly not less than 150 miles, in
an hour. Major Oartviright, on-the ocaat of
Labrador, found, by repeated observations, that
the flight of an elides duck was at the rats of
90 miles an hour. The flight of the common
crow is nearly 26 miles an hour ; and Spinet . -
staitfound that of the swallow to be 92 miles,
while he conjectures that the rapidity of the
swift is nearly three times greater. A falcon,
kelonging to Henry IV., of France, flew from
Fountainblean to Malta, in less than 24 hours,
the distance being 1,860; and it is probable
that his flight was about 76 miles an , hour, as
such birds - fly in the day 'dale only. These
facts show how easily • birds can accomplish
their extensive •migrations, especially when we
consider that a favorable wind materially helps
them on their voyage.
Thounn Meson is a sturdy old blustering
of a month, and occasionally 'vindicates the
memory of winter with a rehearsal of piping
gales and frosty dispensations, he has moments
of mildness when the genial atmosphere of
Spring makes Nature feel that she is peeling
into wadi season. The violet must be creep
ing up 'pretty well from the South-by this
time, and doubtless many a pretty bird in 'the
forest of Georgia and the Carolinas is plurning
himself for en• early voyage to his Northern
nest. There axe fogs yet to be sure, on ourriv.-
ers and marshes, and crystal 'IAN from the
ice-blockades of January and February still
float down the stream at intervals ; but in the
fogs there is a prophecy of genial April showers,
and the scudding ice melts as it tosses on = the
current, at every glance of the sun. The signs
are, that we shall have a bright and healthful
Spring this year ; and its sunshine will be all
the more glorious to our people, that ins like
ly to gleam upon our banner glittering triumph
ly over the last breastworks of bloody and ig
noble Treason. If /leaven continues to smile
upon oar insulted nation In her efforts to vin
dicate herself against the meanest and basest of
all foes, the burning sun of June may lend
hitlight to the flag of our Union floating in
'triumph over as many States as there are ban
nered stars. In fact, there is every reason to
believe that "the Spring of 82" will be a glo
rionsly memorable season to as for. many
y ears to come ; and now that it is opening tio
bright through the mist of Winter's dying .
Eireath, let us hope that our whole country will
