respective places for holding Ward meetings,

hold general Ward meetings in the early part

nation for the various offices to be filled on next
Friday. It is very important that good men
should be placed in nomination.

Tam CON'rLNXNRAL OLD rms.—We bare sel
dom, if ever, seen a larger or more respectable
audience than was assembled iu Brant's Hell
last evening at the concert of the " Old
Polio." They fully sustained their reputation
as accomplished vocalists, and the hearty ap
'plause of those preseht fully testified how much
they appreciated the music. The selections
consisted of several pieces of church music, be
sides popular solos, glees and choruses, all of
which were rendered with fine effect: The
troupe consists of twelve performers,moet of
them dressed in ancient costume, and one of the
ladies, Mrs. Nichols, had a dress which was
wore by Queen Elisabeth more than 800 years
ago. It was presented to her in London by a
lineal descendant of Lord Bur Leigh Mrs. Bhep
beard and Mrs. Nichols are both fine vocalists,
and nndered their solo; with great sweetness
and flexibility of voice. The troupe will give
another concert this evening, and as the pro
ceeds are to be devoted to a laudable and patri
otic purpose, we feel assured that there will be
a .ull house on the occasion.

visiting a large city to find a hotel conveniently

it has all the substantial conveniences of first,

luxuries of the season in abundance.; itacham
bets are roomy, with good beds and sufficient
toilet appurtenances, while from its widows a
better view of Broadway can be obtained than
from almost any hotel situated. upon it. The
lattice parlors are specious and beautifully fnr
niabed, so lima even a rainy day in New York
can be plrantly spent in viewing the pancr
rama of a great city, as it moves on with sights,
scenes and incidents ever changing, and hardly_
equalled upon any stage. With its advantages
of situation,lhia hotel has long been it popular
stopping place for merchants visiting New York,
bat now, under its present management and
with its recent improvements, we anticipate a
"perfect rush." Among the regular boarders
at this hotel is Commodore Neirr, Barnum's new
man in miniature, who is said to be a bard nut
to crack, and whose jokes keep the table in a
roar.
It is a matter of some interest to our readers
to know that they oui find in New York city a
hotel situated directly opposite the Astor Souse,
offering to its guests the convenience and accom
modations of a first class house for the unirm
ally moderate charge of one dollar and fifty
cents per day, and we recommend them to try
Poyang' Holm. They will find that its propri
etor possesses the accomplishment of knowing
how to keep a hotel.

Bwoan PRISIIINTATION.—Ono of the soft plea
sant parties which it has been our good fortune
to attend, convened at the Farmers' Hotel last
evening. The object of the meeting was tbit
presentation of a sword to Capt. Wm. E. Beet,
of the Eleventh Pennsylvania Volimteers, com
manded by Col. Richard Conker.
We have witnessed many presentitious,, but
thiti one exceeded them all in truthful senti
ment and manly feeling on the part of the
loyal and generous donors. •
The following are the remarks of Mr. B. G.
Peters, who was designated by Capt. Sees'
friehds to make the presentation:
Captain Sees—ln behalf of a few of your per
sons' friends, I present you this sword as a
token of their sincere friendship, and feel,
mitred, whilst I am doing so, that Ispeak with
confidence when I say that you will use it in
defence of our glorious cause—the Union and
Constitution of our country. Go then, and
join your regiment, and be assured that you
have the best wishes of your friends for your
success, and the success of the cause you are
defending. Wishing that you may be blest
with health and strength to conquer the foes
of our country, and return to your home with
honor to yourself, and victory to the muse you
are about going to defend, I hand you this
sword in behalf of your friends.
In acknowledgment, Capt. Sees replied as
friends—For this elegant token of your es•
teem, accept my sincere thanks. Rest assured
that in my hands it shall be used as effectively
as it is possible for one man to do, whose
strongest desire is to aid in *rushing out this
wicked and unholy rebellion. And be assured
that if ever the opportunity offers to use it,
that tbe thought which will inspire ape with
courage to strike hard and sure will be that
friends like you thought me worthy to repre
sent you in this sword.

no man of his age that has been brought up

has proved himself a true and loyal man, we
hope the tax-payers will insist upon his being
a candidate, and his election is certain.
MARRIED WOMIN Law.—There Is a very gen
eral mistake in the community as to the power
of married women .to bind themselves by con
tract, and this mistake allows a great deal of
swindling to be carried on under the name of
married women. A married man being insol
vent seta up business in the name of his wire,
perhaps calls himself her agent. She, or he in
her name, makes bargains, signs notes, gives
bonds and confesses judgments. Persons deal
ing with such parties, knowing or believing
that the wife has property in her own right,
and thinking that her obligations are good,
give her credit. They probably find out when
foo late that the note, bond or judgment con
fessed by a married women, though she may be
worth thousands, is not worth a copper. No
judgment can be obtained against her on any
contract, note or bond, which she enters into Or
gives, and a judgment confessed by her is
. a
mere nnlity. She may, possibly, give a judg
ment for the purchase money of real estate she
buys, though this is by no means certain, and
she by 'uniting with her husband can execute a
mortgage, which will bind any real estate she.
may own.. With these exceptions, all the
documents she may sign in the way of obliga
tions to pay money, are not worth the paper
they are written on, a fact which every one
ought to know. There have been swindling_
operations carried on all over the country
for years by the married women dodge opera
tions which should have sent some of the par=
ties to the penitentiary, and it is important
that the public, to escape being swindled fur
ther, should know what the law is. What
makes the matter worse is, that a man and his
wire being one person in contemplation of
law cannot be indicted for a conspiracy to cheat
their creditors when the fact is perfectly eO
- but can pocket the money and laugh at
those who were fools enough to depend upon
the contracts of married men.

A SUPPLEMENT ,to _ an act in , relation to public
printing, approved the ninth day of - April,
one thousand eight hundred and fifty-six.
Sacrum 1. Be it awned by the ante and House
of Repr esentatives of the Onnsnonsoealth of Pennsyl
vania,- i n Greneral *nobly tad, and it is hereby
enacted by the, authority of the sante, That the con
tractor or contractors for the public printing
and binding, shall hereafter be allowed for the
translation of Knglish matter required to be
printed in the German language the sum of forty
cents per thousand ems. Provided, That no
charge shall be allowed for figures or other mat
ter not actually translated.
Sic. 2. That in addition to the charges al
lowed for the furnishing of blanks, by the elev
enth section of the act to Which this is a supple
ment, there shall hereafter be allowed for down
red ruliog five 'cents per quire of twenty-four
sheets.
Sec. 8. That,it ith the intent and meaning ß t.
of the act to which this is a supplement, thlt
there shall be no charge allowed for composi
tion on any extra documents ordered, unless
the composition has actually been performed,of
which an affidavit of the public printer shall be
required by the Auditor General.

of March, one thousand eight hundred and six
ty-two, and on the fourth Tuesday of January
every third year thereafter the Legislature shall
meet in joint convention in the Hall of the
House of Representatives, and let the public
printing and binding for three years according
to the provisions of this nEt, and the act to
which this is a supplement, except that but one
week's public notice may be given of the time of
the allotment for tne year one thousand eight
hundred and. sixty-two. Provided, That the
bonds with the sureties of the several bidders
shall be duly executed, sealed up and delivered
with the proposals for the printing and binding
and in addition to the condition now required
by law, shall be conditioned that in case the
bidder or bidders to whom the printing and
binding shall be awarded, shall neglect or re
fine to accept the same at his or their bid, the
paid bidder or bidders w.Jth his or their sureties
aforesaid shall be liable to the Commonwealth
for the difference' between the amount of such
bid_and the amount of the bid of the person to

said Commonwealth will receive proposals until
the 18th day of March, 1862, for doing the Public
Printing and Binding for the term of three
years from the let dayof July next, at a certain
rate per centum below the rates specified in the
acf relating to the Public Printing and Binding,
approved the 9th day of April, L. n., 1866, and
according to the mode and manner, and condi
tions, therein specified, and in the supplement
to said act above recited.
Said proposals to specify the rate ptri (mitt=

together,and not a specification of the rate per

The following is the fdrm of proposals for
the State Printing and Binding:
