She haebeen well eines then WI last eater day, while engaged In house cleaning, she took cold, had Willa her back, felt cold, hot had no decided chill. TwoLdays later her ankles be• get to swell, which was followed by swelling of the knee joints and of the bands.. She has now dull pain in her shoulders, and her knuckles are. ery tender, red and painful ; both hands are, affected, but the right Is most so. This; then; le I Cade of Smite rbeuinatiam, or, as It is now fashionably palled rheumatic fever. I ll s well remarked ' Vidal ease. , We will carefully watch the case, and from time to , time call your attention to the vari ous sys i nm a which present thethselves. My chief object in brie her before you. now, is to call attention to a remedy w has recently been recommended In the treatment of rheumatism. I mean prtpyiuntine. . 'Dr swans:ice, of. St. Petersburg, recommends it In the highest terms, haling derived great benefit from its : use In 260 cases which came under his care. Various com mendatory testimonials respecting It have appeared in our Journals, and I propose therefore to give It another triaL I meattionfesel am always incredulous as to the worth of new remedies, which are vaunted as specifies ; but this comes to us recommended so highly, that we are bound to give it a trial. SAME CASE F01:111 DAYS LATER 1 Kai 23, 1860,—1 will now exhibit to you the patient for whom I prescribed Propyhimine, and was then labor ing under an attack of acute rheumatism. She has steadily taken it In doses of three grains every two hours (intermltUng it at night) The day alter you saw her, I found her much more comfortable, better than she ex pected to be for a week or more, judging from her other shit% (The patient now walked Into the room.) The impr ement Ms steadily progressed, and you cannot fail to notice a marked change in the appearance of her Joints, Width are now nearly all or their natural size.— Thos far our experiment would 111190 seemed very suc cessful ; but, gentlemen, we must wait a little while -be fore We can give a decided opinion as to what is to be the result. Here is another patient who was placed on the use of the Same medicine on Sunday last; she has long been suffering from o bromic rheumatism, and I found her at that thno . With an acute attack supervening upon her chronic affeetion. The wrists and knuckles were much swollen and tense. She took the chloride of Propy (a mine in three grain doses every two hours, and you will parody° that the Welling ot the johns has much dimin ished. THREE DAYS LATER !I Max 26, 1860.—This is the case of acute rheumatism treated with propylamlne, the first of those to which I called your attention at our last clinic. She is still very comfortable, and is now taking three grains thrice daily. In this case it has seemed to be followed by very eatt isfactory results. The second case to which your atten tion was called at our last lecture, has also continued to do welt I will now bring before you a very character istic case of acute rheumatism, and if the result be sat. factory, I think, as good Juryman, we sull justly render our venlict in favor of propyla mi n He is a seaman, mt. 26, who was admitted a few days ago. Has had ocaasionll rheumatic pains, but not so as to keep his bed, until eight days ago. The pains began in his right knee, subsequently affected the left knee, and later, the joints of the upper extremities. These Joints are ell ewollen, tense and tender. His tongue • is lured ; his skin, at present dry i though there has been much sweating. His pulse IBM and strong, and about 90, Heine now used propylaudne for twenty-four hours. This gentleman is what may be called a strictly typ Icpi case of nuts rheumatism. There was exposure to cold and wet, and this expinure is %Sowed by coldneu, severe arUcular pain, beginning, as it a l ly.us does, in the lowerjoints. There is foyer and the profuse , sweating, 80 generally attlendant on acute rheumatism. I did not bring this patient betbre you with the i nutri tion of giving you a Imbue on ail the points concerted with rheumatism, bat to again give, a trial to the new remedy we are lasting, end to exhibit to you this typical case, as I have called it, than which there co old not be a fairer opportunity for • testing the medicine in question. We are, therefore, avoiding .the use -of all other meditates, even anodynes, that there may be- no utisgivings as to which was the efficient remedy. YOa shall see the case of a future clinic. TEE RESULT. A FAVORABLE VERDICT Joust?, 1860.—The next of our convalescents la the cam of acute rheumatism before you at our chide of May Sikh, which I then called a typical case, and which it was remarked was a fair opportnulty for testing the worth of our pew remedy, It was therefore steadily given in three grain doses every two hours for four days. The patient has got along very nicely, and is now able be walk about, as you see. Ido not hesitate to aty that I have neves seen as severe a case of acute rheumatism so soon restored to health so this man has been, and without being prepared to decide positive uy as to the val ue of the remedy we have used, I feel bound to sta to that in the oases in which we have tried the Chloride o .Propylamine, the patients have regained their health much earlier than under the treatment ordinarily pur sued. I wish gentlemen, you would yourselves try It, and report the results. . For a hill report of which the above is a eondemied extract, see the Philadelphia 'Wiwi and Surgical Re porter.
