Two years ago she had an attack of aonte rheuma tism-Atom which she was confined to her bed for two weeks and subseqentiy from a relapse fer four more. Sheiks been well since then till last Satur day, while engaged in house cleaning, she took cold, had pain in her back, felt cold, hot bad RO decided chill. Two days later her ankles be so swell, which was followed by swelling of the knee joints and of the hands. She has now dull pain In her shoulders, and her knuckles are very tender, red and painful ; both hands are affected, but the right is most so. This, then, Is a case of acute rheumatism, or, as it is new fashionably called, rheumatic fever. It is a well remarked typical case. We will carefully watch the case, and from time to time nail your attention to the Tort ola symptoms which present themselves. My chief ohlaot in bringing her before you now, is to call attention to a remedy which has recently been recommended in the treatment of rheum/dime. I mean propylastine. Dr. Awenatius, of St. Petersburg, recommends it, in the highest terms, having' erived great benefit from its use in 20 cases which came under his care. Various co m mandatory testimonials respecting it have appeared in ourjournats, and I propose therefore to give it another trial. I must confess lam always incredulous as to the worth of new remedies, which sea vaunted as specifies ; but this comes to us recommended so highly, that we are hound to give it a trial." MIT 23,1880.—1 will now exhibit to you the patient for wham I prescribed Propylamine, and was then labor ing under an attack ot acute rheumatism. She has steadily taken it in doses of three grates every two hours (intermitting it at night.) The day after you saw her, I found her much more comfortable, better than she ex pected to be for a week or more, judging from her other attack. (The patient now walked into the room.) The improvement has steadily progressed, and you cannot fail to notice a marked change in the appearance of her joints, which are now nearly all of their natural size Thus far oar experiment would have seemed very sue cesspit ; but, gentlemen, we meat wait a little while be fore, we can give a decided opinion as to what is to be the result. Here is another patient who was planed on the use of the game medicine on Sunday, last; she has long been snaring from chronic rheumatism, and I found her at that , time With an acute attack supervening upon her chronic affection. The wrists and knuckles were much swollen and tease. ^a took the chloride of Propyla mine in three grain 'doles every two hours, and you will pereeive that the swelling ot the joints has much dimin ished. Mar 20, 1860.—This is the case of acute rheumatism treated with propylamine, the • first of those to which I called your attention at our last clinic, She is still very comfortable, and Is now taking three grains thrice daily. In this case it has seemed to be followed by very sat isfactory results. The second aisle to which your Wen. tioniwas called at our last lecture, has also continued to do well- I will now bring before you a very chum:der ail°, case of acute rheumatism, and if the result be sat- - fitetery, I think, as good'juryme ] t, we shall justly render our Verdict in favor of propyle He is a seaman, mL SS, who was admitted a few tap% ago; Has bad ocsaalonal rheumatic pains, but not so as to keep his bed, until eight days ago. The pants began In his right knee, subsequently affected the left knee, and Wei, the joints of the upper extremities. These joints are all swollen, tense ana tender. Hie tongue is furred ; his skin, at present dry, though there has been much sweating. His pulse IBM and strong, and about 90,—. Ile has new used propylamine for twenty-four hours. This gentleman is, what may be called a strictly case of acute rheumatism. There was exposure to cold and wet, and this exposure is followed by a feeling of °oiliness, severe articular pain, beginning, as it usually dole, in the lower, joints. There a fever and the profuse sweating, so generally &Menden% on acute rheumatism: d: id not bring this patient before you with the 1 nten tiOti of giving you a lecture on all the pointa connected with rheumatism, but to again give, a trial to tile new remedy we ace aloft", and to WAWA. ht 'Yritt this typical case, as I have called it, than which there co uld nottbe a fairer opphrtunity for Mating , the, medicine in I queStien. We are, therefore, avoiding' the use of all other medicines, even anodynes, that there may be no misgivings as to which was the efficient remedy. Yon shail see the case of a future nib*. Jesse, 1880.—The next of oar convalescents Is the mute of acute rheumatism before you at our clinic of May 86th, which I then called a typical case, and which .it was remarked was a , fair opportunity for testing the worth 01 our new remedY. It was therefore steadily given in throe grain doses every two hours for four days. The patient has got along verrnioelY, and is now able fa r walk about, as you see. Ido not hesitate to say that I have west seen as severe a ease of acute rheumatism so soon restored to health as this man has been, and without being prepared to decide positive by as to the val. ne of the remedy we have used, I feel bound to Its, to that in the cases in which we have tried the Chloride o Prcewlamine, the patients have regained their health much earlier than under the treatment ordinarily pur sued. Having inherited a Scrofulona infection, I have suffered from it in various ways for years. Sometimes it burst out in Ulcers on my hands and arms ; sometimes turned ra wer,' and distressed me at the stomach. Two years ago it broom out on my head and covered my scalp and ears with one sore, which was palatal and loathsome beyond description. I tried many medio'nes and several physi cians, bat without much relief from any thing. In fact, the disorder grew worse. At length I was rejoiced to read in the Gospel Messenger that you had prepared au alternative (Sarsaparilla,) for I knew from your rep• elation that any thing you made must be goo& I sent to Cincinnati widget it, and need it till it cured me. .
