ARREST OP DZEIBERTiaII.—AO order from Capt.
Dodge, euPerinteeiieni of the recrnitirurservice
in this State, makes it the duty of recruiting
officers to arrest deserters and send them to him
at Harrisburg, with the evidence of their deser
tion, when they will be transmitted to their
respective regiments. Advertising rewards for
the apprehension of deserters, a practice rather
common of late, is prohibited.
` A itasssimeam Bassi( or sma Wnin.--Darne
Nature is often fantastic in her conduct, and
she often startles us by the superior skill she
displays when she attempts to imitate human
workmanship. A remarkable affair of this kind
was exhibited in our city to-day by Maj. David
Mumma, in the shape of a piece of a flag which
his son had in his patriotism erected over his
father's country residence upon the 22d of Feb
ruary, in honor of Washington's birthday and
our recent victories. By the peculiar force of
the wind the flag was torn into shreds, and
platted firmly together in a regular four ply
plat, as evenly and regularly as if done by the
hand of some skillful workman ; and as if to
make an omen of good for oar country, after
the stars and stripes were firmly platted, a most
curiously wrought knot was fastened at the end
to prevent them, as it were, from ever becom
ing sepairated again.
sera—Big Thing on los.— To the great
delight of skaters, 3. Freet, Esq. ,
,paid us an
other visit last night, and the ice this morn
ing on Dowding's Pond was in grand condition.
Notwithstanding the disagreeable weather,'
a large number of ladles and gentlemen were
present, engaging in the invigorating and
healthful exercise, which has lately become so
popular. Old Boreas was unusually rude and
churlish, whisking about the draperiee of the
fair damsels who braved his-wrath, and pinch
ing the cheeks and noses of their cavaliers,
but tip only effect seemed to be to make the
beaux and belles draw nearer together and
make them skate the faster. To go down the
Pond before the wind was all very pleasant, but
skating back again was not so easy. All fancy
skating wee out of the question. We saw one
gentleman, indeed, executing several fanciful
movements, but as we observed him shortly
afterwards sitting down upon the ice, we con
cluded that his exertions had been rather too
much for him. Still, in spite of the cold, the
scene was extremely enlivening and cheerful,
Here would go some young couple in full sail,
tacking across the Pond to avoid the full dame
of the wind. There comes a gallant, backing
up right in the teeth of the breese with a
fair craft in tow, in all the glories,of ermine
skating-hood and crimson balmoral. The la
' dies, indeed, seemed to pride themselves upon
their hardihood in resisting the wind and the
storm, and certainly they deserve all credit for
their courage. If they only took proper pre
cautions against being chilled after bectiming
overheated by their exertions, they will proba
bly experience no ill effects from their expo
sure, although we doubt not that many old
ladies sagely shook their heads today, when
the young people returned from skating, and
prophesied all sorts of evils in the future.

ilumniy.—The meanest man on earth is the
slanderer. He who, taking ambush. behind
the convenient phrase "they say," endeavors ,
to destroy the reputation of an , enemy Is a
wretch beneath contempt. The foot-pad who
stops the traveller with his "stand and deliv
er" is worthy of respeot, compared with the
cowardly knave who stabs his foe in the dark,
as Ingo did Michael Canto. His deedie Coura
geous, if it is wicked, and he has at lewd the
merit of making no false pretence'. But the
tattlers form another class, which is not al
,together confined to those old ladies who
delight to gossip over their tea, and before
whose remorseless tongues reputations melt
away like the sugar in the boiling Bohea.--
Idle, chattering, emlity-headed creatures, who
delight, parrot-like, to repeat the last new
story, but more particularly if it is to the
disadvantage of those whom they call their
friends, are to be found in every circle of so
ciety and of both sexes. They repeat only
.what they have heard. "So-and-so told me,
I cannot vouch for the truth of it, very likely
it is not so. I wouldn't on any account have
the story come from me." And so these ill
omened magpies go hopping about, prating of
that of which they knew nothing, and sowing
the seeds of misery for many an honest man
or innocent girl, when in their presence, their
words will be sweeter than honey. It is a
very good rule, but one which Is often disre
garded, to say nothing behind a man's back
which you would not say before his face. It is
the golden rule applied to the use of the
tongue, and that member being proverbially
unruly, perhaps it is no wonder that slander Is
so rife. The best man has some flaws in'his
character. The beet man occasionally iloto
things of which he is afterwards ashamed. '"...Tt

Tea ezooan CONOBILT of the Continental Old
Folks, at Brant's Hall, last evening, was an
unusually pleasant entertainment. There are
splendid voices among the Old Folks, and they
use them to the best advantage. The voice of
Mrs. Nichols is unsurpassed for sweetness, afid
she alone would be sufficient to "draw a house."
Mrs. Sheppard is also a very sapeTior vocalist
The basso of Mr. Gulick is powerful, and there
is an alto voice in the party that is remarkable
for strenth and melody. The whole troupe ap
pear in ancient costumes, Mrs Nichols wearing
the identieal dress worn by Queen Elizabeth the
first time she appeared before Pailiamenc In
1699. The Old Folks will give another concert
this (Saturday) evening, and we advise every
person fond of good music to be on hand.
To rna Puma o. --The Condi !ion of onr country
a few months since, and the fear of a protracted
war, was the inducement with sorts of `otit
manufacturers to advance the price of cotton
goods, outside specniation.also contributed to
an additional advance, from the fact of holding
large quantities of goods out of the market.
The recent victories of the federal army, and
the probability of a ,speedy settlement of our
difficulties, has thrown those goods upon the
market, hence a small abatement in prices ; it

change until an uninterrupted supply of cotton
