I VALENTINE'fI DAY.—Friday next, :the.l4th
.-t . will he St. Valentine's day, and if we
n, itula from the displays in the shop Win
the custom . of sending missives to.sweet
i earts has not yet become altogether obsolete.
The origin of the day is thus given :
"St. Valentine was a presbyter , of the
cfmrch, who suffered martyrdom at Rome, in
the year 271, during the reign of °maim.
Valentine's day received that appellation from
his being sent upon the day conaeorat4d to
Lim, the proper name of which is St. Valen
tine's day. The custom of sending thaw ruts
elves is said to have arisen from the alleged
fact, that unon that day, the 14th of February,
the birds choose their mates, and hence the
custom is followed by unykdged youths."

"In these days when disesses.of the throat

the use of common salt Is recommended as an
effectual remedy. We commenced by using it
three times a day—mctruiug, noon and night.
We dissolved irlarge tablaspoonfid-of pure ta

been that, during .the entire winter, we were;

this satisfactory result entirely to the salt
