well since then till last Saw day, while engaged in house
cleaning, she took cold, bad pain in bor back, felt cold,
hot had so derided chill. Two days later her ankles be
gan so swell, which was followed by swelling of the
knee joints end of the hands. She has now dull
pain In her shoulders, and her knuckles are very tender,
red and Painful ; both bands are Wetted, but the right
is most se. This, then, is & mute of acute rheumaism, or,
as It.la now fashionably called, rheumatic fever. It is a
well remarked typical ease Me 1114 careflilly watch the

in bringing her before you now, la • to call attention to a
remedy which has recently been I ecom mended, In the
treatment of rheumatism. I m min propplamine. Dr •
kwenarios, of St. Petersburg, recommends it In the
highest terms, haying derived great benefit from its use
in 250 cases which came under his care. Various com
mendatory testimonials respecting It have appeared In
our Jowls*, aid 1 propose therefore to give it another
trial I most confirm I rim alwitys incredulous as to the

but this comes to us recommended ao highly, that we

•
Mir 25, 1880.-1 will now exhibit to you the patient for
Who'll' prescribed Propyiamine, and was then labor
ing under an attack of acute rheumatism. She has
steadily taken it in dame of three grains every two hours
(intermitting it at night.) The day after you saw her, I
found her much more comfortable, better than she ex.
peeled to be for a week or more, judging, from her other
attack. (The patient now walked into the room.) The
Improvement has steadily Progressed, and you canoe',
fall to notice a marked change in the appearance of her
Pinta, which are now nearly all of their natural sixe .—
Thus far our experiment would Dave seemed very sue
easeful ; but, gentlemen, we must wait a little while be
fbre we can give a decided opinion as to what in to be
the result.
Here is another patient who was place.t on the use of
the name medicine on Sunday last ; she has long been
suffering from c braille rheumatism, and I found her at
'battling with an .acute attack supervening upon her
chronic affliction. The wrists and knuckles were much
swoltediand terse. She took the chloride of Propyla
inhuiln. three grain doses every two hours, add you will
perceive that the swelling of the joints has much dimin
ed,•

ln this case It has seemed to be followed by very, 'st
atutory results. The second e.ee to winch your awn.

do well. I will now bring before you a very charaoter
tstic case of acute rheumatism, and if the resat be sat.

our verdict in favor of propybiWns
HO isa seaman, get. 25, who was
,admitted a few days

to keep his bed, until eight days ago. The pains began
In hie right knee, subsequently affected theleft Imes, and
later,_ the joints of th e upper extremillee. These ; joints
are ll swollen, tense sea tender. His tongue is tarred g
his Sian, at praient dry, though there has - ban' meat
swaging. His pulse WWI and strongi and Abdul 90.
He has now used propyhtudne lbr twenty-four hours.
This gentleman is what may be called& strictly typical
case of acute rheumatism. Tbere was exposure to cold
andmet, and this exposere is folloobd by r feeling of
'coldness, severe articular pain, beginning, as it usually
dal, in the lower joints. There is fever and the profuse
sweating, so generally attlendant on acute rheumatism .
I did net bring this patient befbre you with the l nten
tkaof giving you a lecture on all the points connected
with rheumatism, but to •again give a trial to the
new remedy we are testing, and. to exhibit to you this
typhad caws, as I have calla it, than which there co old
not be a fairer opportunity 'for Meting the medicine in
qUeShOtt. We are, therefore, avoiding the use of all
other medicines, even anodynes, that thorn may be no
inisglvings as to which was the ancient remedy. You
shall see the case 01 a future clinic.
THE RESULT
