ting as nurses to the sick soldiers in the miff
ray hospital :it Camp Curtin. Their modest

ings of aid soldiers, who treat them with the
rep trot due their heavenly mission.
SANFORD.S OHBA House.--The Bordwells, not
w Maraud lug the inclemency of the weather,
war greeter with a full house, at Sanford's
Orera House Monday night. Their performances
were of the most entertaining character, and
pleased the audience exceedingly. They will
appear again this evening in parlor opera, which
in connection with an excellent programme of
entertainment by Sanford's troupe, will, no
doubt attract another crowded house.
Due Tax —Petition's for a dog tax.of not lees
than ono dollar are in circulation in various
path; of the State. they pray the legislature
to iruptke this tax for the purpose of aiding in
the snrport of the poor in such locations where
thole are uo poor houses, and in every instance
where the tax thus raised is not absorbed for
the support of paupbrs, it shall be devoted to
Ruhuol and road purposes. The idea may be a
good one, but the petitioners will find all taxa
tion, hereafter, sufficiently high without the
necessity of creating any new taxes.
Crum Flan COMPANY.— A stated meeting
of the Citizen Fire Company was held at the
Company's Engine house, last Monday even
ing, when the following officers were elected
for the ensuing term:

to which the captain's company is attached, has
already distinguished itself in the field, and pro
mises to perform still greater deeds in the war
for the preservation of our glorious Union.—

private letter, that the wife of a respectable
citizen of Shippensburg, Cumberland county,
recently gave birth to a child which had four
ears, four legs and four arms—all, with the
rest of its body, singularly well eaveloped. The
child lived only a short time after its birth.

the operations of 0010.4 fkhoollinperintendent
Ingram, for the month of October :
.One teacher was examined, and one certifi
oats approved, to supply a vacancy caused by
resignation.
Forty-six schools were visited in Middle Pax
ton, West Hanover, South Hanover, East Han
over, borough of Millersburg, Upper Paxton
and Mifflin.
, One hundred and three and a half hours were
spent in the schools of this District, =king an
average duration of time in each school of 2
hours and 15 minutes.
Attended 1• District-Institute, , andepent two
days at Lebanon county Teacher's Institute.
Traveled"2lB mike, of which, walked 1091--
by railroad 91—in other conveyances, 1771
miles.
Schools generally doing very well—very lit
tle complaint.
The citizens of . Millersburg have a. school
house they may well be proud of. Thelund
tura, best style, is being made as fast as pos

from the peculiar circumstances connected with
it, promises to be of unusual interest; and from
