DOCTORS KNOW IT, PATIENTS BELIEVE IT, TRIt'D AND TRUE. PENNSYLVANIA HOSPITAL [FmomiOmina. Hoerrw. MePons.] Mar 19, 1860,,,E11es S., ait..2B, single, never was very strong. Two years ago she had an attack of acute rheuma listnotrom which she was confined to her bed for two weeks and subseqently from arelapse fer four more. She has been well since then till last Satin day, while engaged in house cleaning, she took cold, had pain in her back, felt cold, hot had so decided chill. Two days later her ankles be gan so swell, which was followed by swelling of the knee joints and of the bands. She has now dull pain in her shoulders, and her knuckles are very tender, red and painful ; both banns are alle.ted, but the right is most so. This, then, Is a case of acute rheumatism, or, as it is now fashionably called, rheumatic lever. It is a well remarked , typical ease We will carefully watch the case, and from time to time, call your attention to the vari ous symptoms which present themselves. My chief object in bringing her before yon now, is to call attention to a remedy which has recently been recommended in the treatment of rheumatism. I 121=propyIsmine. Dr. Awenarius, of St. • Petersburg, recommends it in the highest. terms,,having derived great (moat from its , use in 290 eases which came under his care. Various co m mendatorY. testimonials respecting it have appeared in our journals, and I propose therefore to give it another trial I must confess Ism alWays mcredulouS as to the worth of new remedies, which are vaunted as specides ; but this comes to us recommended so highly, that we are bound to give it a tent. SAME'. CASE FOUR DAYS LATER ! MAT 23, 1860.—1 will now exhibit to you the patient for whom I prescribed Propylamine, and was then labor ing under an attack of acute rheumatism. She has steadily taken it in doses of throe grains every two hours (intermitting it at night.) The day after you saw her, I bound her much more comfortable, better than she ex pected to be for a week or More, judging from her other attack. (rite patimunow walked into the room.) The improvement has steadily progressed, and you cannot fail to notice a marked change in the appearance of her Joints,. which are now nearly all of their natural size.— Thus far our exporimeitt would have seemed very suc cessful ; but, gentlemen, we must wait a littlewhile be fore we can give a decided opinion as to what is to be the result. Here is another patient.who was placed on the uge of the same medicine on Suuday fast ; she has long been suffering from chronic rheumatism, and I found her at that time with an acute attack supervening . upon her chronic affiamme. The wrists and's:hackies were much swollen and tense. She took the chloride of Propyla mine in three grain doses every two hours, and you will perceive that the swelling of tllO joints WO much dimin ished. THREE DAYS LATER I MAY 26, 1860.—This is the case of acute rheumatism treated. With propylamine, the first of Leese to wuch / nailed your attention at our last clinic. alio is still very comfortable, And is now Liking titree grains thrico daily. In this case it has seemed to be followed by very, sat isfactory results. The second a .8u to winch your alien. don was called at our last lecoare, has also continued to. do welt. I will now bring before you a very &urea tec hnic case of acute rheumatism, and if the result be a:A leatory, I think, as good jurymen, we snail justly render Our verdict in favor of propylamm ,, He Is a seaman, mt. 26, who was admitted a few days ago. Has had ocaasional rheumatic pains, but not so as to keep his bed, until eight days ago. The pains began in his right knee,, subsequently alluded the left knee, and later, We joints of the upper extremities. ;these joints are all swollen, tense awl leader: the tongUe is furred his skin, at present dry, though there has been Much' sweating. His pulse is tall and strong, and about 90. He has now.used propylamine for twenty-four hours. . This gentleinaula what may be called astrietly typical case of acute rheumatiam. Tbere was :exposure to cold and wet, and this exposure is followed by a feeling of coldness, severe articular pain, beginning, as it usually dots, in the lower joints. There is fever and the profuse sweating, so generally atttendant on acute rheuraausm I did net bring this patient before you with the i uten tton of giving you a lecture on all the points connected with rheumatism,. but to again give a trial to Lae new remedy we are testing % and .to exhibit to you this typical haee, as I have called it, than winch there co old nut be a fairer opportunity for testing the mediates In question. We are, therefore, avoiding the use of all other medicines, even anodynes, that there may be no misgivings as to which was the efficient remedy. You Shall see the case el a flitureclinic. A FAVORABLE VERDICT . . 'hong, 1800.—The next of our convalescents is the case of acuterhoumatlam beforeyou atour °lido of-May Beth, which I then called a typical case,. and which • it was remarked was ;a fair oppor tunity , for teathig the worth at .our new remedy, It'was thereMre steadily given in-three grain dosee every two hours for four days. The Patient hut got along very nicely, and-is now able to walk about, as you. see. . Ido na hesitate to siy that I hive neien seen as severe newse .of aeute,. rheumatism so soon restored to 'health' as this than has been, and without being prepared to decide positive by as to the val ue of the remedy we - have used, I feel bound to eta to that in the cases in, Which. we have tried the, Chloride o Propylimide, the patients hive regamed their ,health much earlier than under the treatment ordinarily pur sued:. .1 wish gentlemen, you would yourselves try, it, sod report the results.
