pail g 47titgra0. HARRISBURG, PA. Monday Afternoon, January 24, 1862. Tin " PAYMASTER AROUND. "-A paymaster arrived in our city last Saturday, and was to have commenced paying off the troops at Camp Curtin this morning. One or two regiments will leave forthe seat of war directly after re ceiving the " sPondulieks." POLICE MAIMS are exceedingly dull in our City just now, and unless something " turns up" soon, our policemen will " spile" for want of service. The only cases at the Mayor's of fice this morning were that of Win. Burton and Mary Locker—both arrested for vagrancy, and after a hearing discharged. COURT. —The regular term of the court of common picas commenced this morning. The trial list is not very large, but it will doubtless occupy the attention of the court during the week. The prisoners tried last week have not yet received their sentences, nor will they, most probably, until about Tuesday of next week. RELIGIOUS Itsvrvillite.—Quite air interesting series of religious revivals are now in progress In the Fourth street Bethel, the Vine street Methodist Mission, and the United Brethern Church, in Second street. A number of people have professed conversion, embracing thelhild of tender years, as well as the tottering mat ron and sire. Ina Lemma. CAVALRY.—CoI. William's Regi ment of Pennsylvania Cavalry, has removed from camp Andy Johnson, near Indianapolis, to a position a few miles beyond the Green river, in Kentucky. The regiment passed through Louisville on Sunday of last week. The Tournal of that city says, they are well supplied with arms, but their horses are not generally up to the requirements of active ser vice. ...--.....,....... NEW TIME TABLE.-A new schedule of time for the arrival and departure of the several trains on the Pennsylvania Railroad, went into effect this morning The particulars are given in an advertisement in another part of this evening's TELEGRAPH. By the new arrange ment, the Philadelphia daily papers, that for merly reached here at 1 o'clock P. M., now, ar rive at 8,65 o'clock A. M. I=l SANFORD'S .Oman Housz.—The combination of talent and attraction in song and ballet, and all the requisites of light amusements, now en gaged at this house, certainly rivals anything yet shown in our city, and it is not astonishing that the measure of success is continually in creasing. Frank Brower, a celebrated delinea tor of Ethiopian charactei, miles his first ap pearance before a Harrisburg public at the Opera House this evening. HMIWAT ROBBERY.-A man whose name we could not learn, from Williamsport, who bad come to this city for the purpose of enlisting in one of the volunteer companies at Camp Cur tin, while passing through the .Harrisburg bridge, last Saturday night, was knocked down and robbed of fifty dollars in cash by a party of four or five soldiers who were lying in wait for him. The man made information of -the fact before the Mayor, and this morning officers Campbell and Kline, proceeded to Camp Cur tin, where they succeeded in arresting three of the party who, after a hearing, were committ ed to prison to answer. Film—The alarm of fire about half-past nine o'clock this morning was ocoasioned by the burning of a frame barn in Cranberry Al ley, below Third street, belonging to Berets' Brewery eatablishmeit. Owing to the combat; table material of wh‘h the building was com posed, the fire progressed rapidly, and before the firemen arrived on the ground with their '6, apparatus, it was completely enveloped in dames, which extended to the adjoining brew ery on the east side, and a stable on the west rr ern side, threatening to envelope both, with a number of frame tenement houses, in a general conflagration. The firemen, nevertheless, went to work with a will and by a liberal use of water, succeeded in arresting the progress of the fire, not, however, until the stable In which it originated was burned to a mere shell. The barn contained a small quantity of hay, a wagon and four large empty beer hogsheads, all of which were consumed. The only damage done to the brewery was the burning of a small portion of its roofing, The stable adjoining the one destroyed, on the western side, is owned by Mr. George Baily, and was considerably burned at the -end exposed to the flames, but the expense of re pairing it will be trifling. It is not known how the fire originated, but is supposed to have been the work of an incen diary. CARD 07 THANXIL—The following patriotic letter hasbeen received by the Relief Associa tion of our city, in acknowledgement of the re ceipt of a lot of clothing, fruits, jellies &c., lent by the association to the sick of the first Pennsylvania cavalry, now stationed at Camp Pierpont, Virginia : CAMP PIPMPOBT, VIRGINIA. McCarm's DIVISION, Jan. 13, 1862. Mr. Enrroa :—Will you allow me through our columns, on behalf of the sick of the first enneylvania cavalry R. C. to thank the la dies of the Soldiers Relief Society: of Harrisburg, nusylvania for their most aco , nteble present, , box of clothing, fruits, jellies, etc. k„ii. i,.. must compliment the judgment with which RAN articles were selected and the care with which they were packed ; all being metal for ;: the sick, and all having carried safely. Could they but see the brightened counts nances of the poor fellows when they receive such favors, they would feel well repaid for their trouble. It is not alone because the clo thing warms their bodies and the delicacies de- light their sense of taste, but to be brought thus to feel that they are still remembered by the dear ones at home, that their mothers, wives and sisters, who cannot do the fighting will work and pray for those who do. It le this which, while it brings tears to the sick soldier's eye, revives his drooping spirits and fills his heart with hope that he may soon be well, and again able to unsheath his sabre in fence of the , government that gives . patriotism to those dear ones, ,i, DEATH OF A HARRISBURG VOLUNTEER —lnfor mation has been received here of the death of John Carson Gratz, a son of Mr. Theodore Gratz of this city, and a volunteer in Capt. Dow ding's company, from Lykenstown, this county, attached to Col. Cake's (96th) Pennsylvania Regiment, which occurred day before yester day at "Camp Northumberland," near Wash ington city. A brother of. the deceased left for Washington yesterday, to bring the re mains home for interment. The deceased was a printer by profession, having worked in this capacity in the office of the "Lykens Journal." He served as volunteer in the three months' campaign, and was among the first of the gal lant young men from the "upper end" to re new his enlistment for three years. His re mains will probably arrive here some time to morrow, and will be interred in the Cemetery. THE KEPNER FPNCIBLEIL—This fine company of Harrisburg volunteers, named after Mayor Kepner, is at present located at Camp Pierpont, near Langly, Fairf ix county, Va A letter re ceived here this morning states that "the health of the company never was better since it left Camp Curtin," and that " the weather was re markably fine, but the roads execrable muddy.' , The company on the 13th inst. held an election for Captain, vice Capt. Wilt, whose continued serious illness in this city induced him to re sign. The result was the election of Thomas D. Horn, who jcined the company at Camp Curtin as a private. He is represented as a good officer, and will no doubt lead the "Fenoi hies" bravely in action. After his election he was made the recipient of a handsome sword, pnrchased by the company and presented in their behalf by Col. Taggert with the ceremo nies usually observed on such occasions. The company, judging from its present location, is in the van of the grand army on the Potomac, and in the approaching great conflict it will no doubt be heard from. TEE READING RAILROAD COMPANY.—We clip the following items respecting the Reading Railroad Company from the last annual report of its President. It shows the present manage. ment to be highly successful,. and will doubt less be satisfactory to all interested in that great improvement: The rolling stock of the Company has been increased 1,050 cars. The transportation of live stock, chiefly for the New York market, via Allentown and Easton, has reached 35,411 tone—an increase of 264 per cent. over last year. The net profits on the Lebanon Palley branch, during the past year, have been equal to the interest (7 per cent.) on the bonds issued for its construction, and fire per cent on the remainder of its cost. In the exercise of the general authority given to the board of mana gers, at the last annual meeting, a majority of stock has been purchased in the Allentown railroad, and in the Schuylkilland Susquehanna railroad. The road of the latter company leads from Auburn, on the line of the Reading rail road, 83 miles from Philadelphia, to Rockville, at the east end of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company's bridge across the Susquehanna river, a distance of 54 miles. The road i, en tirely free from floating debt, and is subject to one mortgage of $97,000, at 6 per cent. inte rest. This purchase entirely obviates the ne cesslty of the , construction of an extension of the Lebanon Valley road to Dauphin, estima ted to cost about -$200,000, s2ooyooo, ono whiott was authorized to be made by the stockholders at their annual meeting in January, 1860.
