pailliftit g rap. HARRISBURG, PA Monday Afternoon, January 20, 1862. THE LEGISTATURE,—Both Hquses of the Leg islature reassembled at 11 o'clock this morn ing, having adjourned over last Friday. A synopsis of to-day's proceedings will be found in another column All the officers have been appointed, and the standing committees an nounced, so that we may now expect to see the business of the session c ,rumenced in earnest. ME "SEVEN SISTERS." — This popular, thrill ing and patriotic drama is to be presented at Sanford's Opera House this evening, with all the original dressrs, scenery and other appoint ments which rendered the piece so highly at tractive in Philadelphia. The play abounds in patriotic allusions, fine tableaux, and local incidents, and is bound to create a sensation in our play-going circles. We anticipate a "full house" at Sanford's tonight. ANOTHER DULL DAY. —The present winter seems to run in the direction of wet and muck rather than in the way of ice and snow. The cold "snaps" are generally of short &nation, and they are succeeded by wretched, foggy and misty weather; the snow storms have thus far proved failures, and they generally end in sleet or rain. Last evening the clouds seemed to portend a snow storm, but to-day we had rain, mist and muck in its stead. A PROFESSIONAL PARTY. —Judge Pearson Of this city presided at the Chester county court last week in place of Judge Butler, in order to try cases in which the latter was interested• The West Chester Times noticing the fact says that Judge Pearson was handsomely entertained at the residence of Judge Butler on Thursday evening last, a large number of professional gentlemen were present. It was an occasion of wit, edification and social enjoyment—festive in more than one sense. I=l JOT SIDEWALKS. —We continue to hear of ac cidents on the icy sidewalks. A stranger pro ceeding to the depot this morning experienced a severe fall in Foutth street, spraining his ankle to such an extent that he was compelled to forego his contemplated departure in the cars, and returned to his hotel, where he is now receiving medical attention. We alluded briefly, some time ago, to the criminal negli gence of householders in not removing the ice remaining on the sidewalks, and even failing to take the cheap and ordinary precaution of sprinkling ashes on the slippery surface. Per haps a smart remauder from the police, in ac cordance with the ordinance on the subject, 'would do something towards effecting a reform in this matter. MADAM:II ANDIA. BISHOP'S CONCERT. —Our read ers should bear the .fact.in mind that Madame Anna Bishop's concert at Brant's Hall comes off on Wednesday evening. We need not say any thing dn . praise of the lady's abilities. No one ever heard her exquisite voice without receiving a new ecstatic sensation, and the echoes of her pure notes vibrate on the recollection, haunting us like pleasant dreams with their sunny influ ences. Her method is a model of excellence, and her voice is as sweet in its cadence as a lute or a harp. We bespeak for her a crowded house and a warm welcome. To the pleasure of Madame Bishop is that of the debut in our city of Mr. Edward Seguin, the son of a cele brated and most popular vocalist. He is said to have Inherited the fine voice of his father, and his musical education has been completed with great care at the imperial conservator at Paris. Tickets for the concert are now far sale at Knoche's music store, 93 Market street, where seats may also be procured. Thrive "cold" is not necessarily says the Scientific American, the result of law or high temperature. A person may go directly from a hot bath into a cold one, or into snow, even, and not take cold as he would by pouring a couple of table spoonsfull of water upon some part of his dress, or by standing in a door, or by opening another, where one part of the body. is colder than another. Let it be kept in mind that unifoi mity of temperature over the whole body is the first thing to be looked after. It is the uniform circulation of some part. If you must keep a partially wet garment on, it would be well, perhaps, to wet the whole of it uni formily. The feet are a great wince of colds, on account of the variable temperature they are subjected to. Keep them alirays dry and warm, and avoid drafts of air, hot or cold, wet spots on the garments and other direct causes of unequal temperature, and keep the system braced up by plenty of sleep, and the eschew ing of debiltiating food and drinks, and you will be proof against a cold and its results. A Ban Paecrice.—We observe that it is quite customary among the denizens of the smaller dwellings of our city, to shut the win dow shutters all around the lower story, as soon as the gas is lignted. This is done partly with a view of economizing fuel, partly in imitation of many of the aristocracy. A cotemporary re marks that is for the latter to hermetically seal their lower story thus when the rooms are extremely large, or when the walls are furnish ed with vents ators, but even when these reme dies are present, the furnace heat and the con sumption of oxygen by a large numberlA gas burners, make the parlors rather smothery places. " One who knows," involuntarily takes a long breathing, whenever he passes over a large parlor, the wooden shutters of which are tightly closed. while yet the sound of a piano -proclaims that it is still tenanted by human be ings. So long as the shutters are open, we can hope that the warping of the unseasoned wood so commonly used in our houses, and the im perfection of the carpenter work will permit of the ingress of some fresh air. But the double barrier is nearly impervious to this invigorating cordial. What shall we, say then of those of the poorer classes who, though they have a hone:: of half a dozen rooms, usually keep up but one fire—so that in the " snuggest" room of the house ; and after the whole family has spent the day in that room, seal it up as above at night P . Gaon° Music Herm.— We advise all who have the " blues" to drop in at the "Grotto," and, if the performances fail to bring imme diate relief, we will be compelled to prononnce the case hopeless. POLICE.—The city lock-up contained six tenants last night—four "drunks" and two colored "wags"—all of whom upon a hearing before his honor, the Mayor, this morning, were properly disposed, of. The consolidated police made no arrests on - Saturday or Sunday. THE "BUCKTAIL" BRASS BAND.—Since the re cent battle at Drainesville, the "Bucktails" have taken an unusual interest in Capt. Eas ton's battery. It is ref orted that two men from each company are daily taking lessons in the artillery drill, so that, should it ever be become necessary, they may render Capt. E. more efficient service. They have dubbed the battery ''The Bucktail Brass Band," and say that there is no mistake in its music, and that they will stick to it to the last. COURT. —The regular term of the c )urt of quarter ses.ions commenced in our city at ten o'clock this morning. There was but a slim attendance of countrymen, owing, we presume, to the bad condition of the roads. A number of the constables of the several wards and townships submitted their reports, and some business of an unimportant nature transacted, when in consequence of the absence of the as sociate judges, and a large number of grand jury-men, the court adjourned until 2 o'clock P. M. The business of the afternoon session was chiefly devoted to the reception of the reports of those constables who were not in attendance at the morning session, and the de livery of the Judge's charge to the grand jury. =I DEATH OF Gro. A. C. SEILER ) Mg. —Meeting of the Bar.—At a meeting of the members of the Dauphin county Bar, held in the Court room, .this morning, the following preamble and reso lutions were unanimously adopted: WnEnzes, It hath pleased God to remove from our midst our fellow member of the Bar, George A. C. Seiler ; And Whereas, It is right and proper that a fit expression of our sentiments should be giv en of this affliction ; therefore, Resolved, That in the loss of Geo. A. C. Seiler, Esq., we feel that one has been taken from us, whose kindness of heart, geniality of manners, and genuine friendship, recommended and en deared him to all his associates. Resolved, That we sincerely condole with his stricken family in this their hour of affliction, and extend to them our earnest sympathy. Resolved, That this Bar attend the funeral of our late Mend and brother Geo. A. C. Seiler, and that these resolutions be entered upon the minutes of the Court, and published. SUNDAY SUMS. —Every Sabbath this winter, since the existence of ice, the river shore and ponds in the vicinity of our city have been swarming with young men and boys amusing themselves with skates. Now this is all wrong. A man or boy who has no more respect for the Sabbath and himself than to engage in such pursuits on Sunday, will, in our opinion, never amount to much. Parents should know where to find their children at least one day in the week, and that day, above all others, should be Sunday. Parents in a great measure ure re sponsible for the actions of their children, and if they do not see that their early training is of such a nature as to make them respect the laws of God, how can they be expected to obey the laws of men. "Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy," says the Fourth Com mandment, and that is God's law, and " the way of the transgressor is hard," and it would be cold too, if they should happen to break through the ice. Artoryr Dunians.—What is a bad dinner?'ls it a plain one ? That, in a country like ours, where the viands are, or ought to be, in their primitive condition, first rate, is the best you can sit down to. The French and Germans are much more scientific in their cookery than we are, but that arises from the fact that they have worse raw material to deal with. Their art has its origin in poverty. Their meat is stringy and lean—their fish poor and tasteless ; but these they can dregs up with sauce of rare poignancy and merit, and from their ovens miserable veal and flaccid carp emerge as posi tivedainties. All honor to them for their in genuity ! They are attempting, through culi nary and almost chemical science, to make pal atable and digestible food out of substances which rank low in the natural scale ; and that they do succeed, what traveled gastronome can deny ? But here, wherethe beef and and mut ton, the flesh and game, poultry and vegeta bles can be had, not only in exceeding variety of kind, but of the primest quality--why should people make a desperate but really un availing effort to introduce foreign appliances which only serve to spoil that which, reasona bly treated, would furnish forth the finest ban quet that the broad universe can display.
