fine brass band, from Camp Curtin, favored
our citizens with a street parade to-day.

A CELEBRATED SONGSTRESS COMING.—Madam
Annie Bishop, of °per. , is celebrity, will give
two grand concerts in Brant's Hall, next Wed
nesday and Thursday evenings. She will be
assisted by several distinguished musical artiste,
which will render the entertainments highly
attractive.
MILITARY RELIEF FOND.—The committee
will meet this evening (Friday) at half-past six
at the office of A. J. Herr, Esq., for the purpose
of settling the accounts As this is a meeting
of particular importance, it is expected that all
will punctually attend.

TIMBER.—The Clearfield Atonal of last week
says: On Sunday night and on Monday, some
five or six inches of snow f , ll in this section of
country, which had the effect of making our
town quite lively. Persons engaged in haul
ing timber are making good use of the snow,
as it enables them to draw their timber with
much more ease than on the bare ground.
NORTHERN CANTRAL RALLHAOD.—The Gener•
al Freight Agent of this road gives notice, that
all .yeeial rates on local freights over this road,
made prior to or during the past year, (1861,)
ceased to be in effect on the 31st December last.
Hereafter all special rates will expire by limi
tation on the last day of the year in which
they are made, except in cases where special
agreements have been made to the contrary.
THE QUESTION "POPPED."—The attention of
those who anticipate advertising certain inter
esting transactions is directed to the top of the
last column on the first page, where rates of
advertising, local notices &c., are published.
If it is worth while to get married and have the
fact published, it is proper to pay parties for
doing it, and publishers do not like to ask min
isters or justices for their fees, and yet it is not
aristocratic nor genteel to draw a prize and

SERIOUS RAILROAD ACZEDENT.-A. man named
Michael Connel, a switch-tender on the North
ern Central railroad, was severely injured last
night, while in the performance of his duty,
at Marysville, several miles above the city, by
being run over by the cars on the Pennsylvania
railroad. The wounded man was brought to
this city, and under the direction of Mr. Young,
Superintendent of the Eastern division of the
Pennsylvania railroad, was provided with lodg
ings at the City hotel, near the depot, where
he was attended by Dr. Rutherford, who am
putated his right arm net the shoulder, and
performed such other services as were necessary
under the circumstances. The condition of
the wounded man this morning was very favor
able, inspiring his friends with fiattering hopes
of his speedy recovery. He is a single man,
and a resident of Baltimore.
COOLNESS or TUC BIETCKTAILS.—A correspondent
writes from one of the northern counties in this
State, where the BuCktails were recruited, as
follows: "I want to hear something of the
Pennsylvanians. I know the boys who fought
at Drainsville and fleshed their maiden swords
under Gen. Ord, and I well knew when they
met the foe somebody would die. I must give
you an incident or two of that fight: Charles
Yahn, a young man from this vicinity, was
shot through the face, shattering the jaw and
knocking out teeth, making a very ugly and
painful wound. Spitting the blood from his
mouth, he handed a cartridge to his next
neighbor, saying, 'I can fight yet, if I can't
bite.' And thus he fought it out, getting his
comrade to bite off the cartridges, and he is
now recovering under the hands of the surgeon.
Another was struck over the eye by a spent
ball, cutting the skin but not entering the
skull. He coolly picked up the bullet, re
marking, 'there is -the Secession lead that
struck me,' and put the little memento into
his pocket. This is the sort of men Pennsylva
nia has in the national army, and I want to
hear more of them."

SANFORD'S OPERA HORSE—The Happy Side of
Darkey Life in Dixie.—lf to laugh is all that
is necessary to grow fat, then we need have no
lank, cadaverous individuals in this community
while Sanford is with us. Every body laughs
at Sanford's, and every body is in a good humor
after being there. The performance of Uncle
Tom's Cabin last night was a perfect hit, and
was duly appreciated by the large and respect
able audience present. All done well. San
ford's representation of Uncle Tom was a per
fect piece of acting in every part, whether in
the gay old darkie, or the more serious mo
ments when he contemplated the effect of the
conduct of George Harris, who was on the eve
of taking his departure for Canada. " Bones,"
- as Topsy, was inimitable as usual, full of fun
'and tricks. Carncross; as George Harris, with
.Lie sweet and admirable voice, and his render
g of the tender passion, was very good.—
'Becket as lame Jake, the jealous nigger, and
, Hall as the inquisitive nigger, sustained their
parts well. Edmonds as Aunt Chloe, and Shack
leton as Eliza, delineated their characters ad
mirably throughout. Indeed, all the perform
ers did so well that we do not know who to
praise mo't, and we have no fault to find with
any. The whole company seemed to forget
that they were only delineating life among the
happy darkies of the south, they entered into
the dances, songs and marriage festivals with
so much earnestness. To appreciate Sanford
you must go and see him. It requires an effort
of the mind to realize that we are not among
the happy darkies, but in the neat and cozy
Opera House of Sanford.

ANOTHER URGE POIOTER.-Mr. Asa Botta of
Middletown, killed a "pig," a few days since,
that weighed 614 pounds, clean meat. The
pig was but 17 months old.

THE Gaorro Music HALL continues to be well
patronized, which is due not only to the en
terprize of the management, but to the merit
of the performances. There is nothing stiff or
constrained about the " Grotto," and order
and quiet are always observed.
SCIENCE has accomplished no greater triumph
than that in which it assists in preserving the
viands and the fruits of the season, so as to en
able the housewife to bring them on her table
as fresh and luscious as when they were plucked
from the garden and orchard. Dock & Co., in
Market street, have an abundant stock of vege
tables and fruits thus preserved, as will be seen
by their advertisement. They have peaches
almost as fresh as when they hung on the tree—
grapes as fragrant as when they perfumed the
vineyard—vegetables certainly as healthy and
as delicious as when they were yet growing•in
the garden. All this is the triumph of science—
and we are puzzled which to admire most, the
science which thus preserves the fruits of the
earth, or the enterprise which enables our citi
zens to partake of and enjoy these luxuries.

Tun THREE Camp DISEASES. —Soldiers 1 n camp
suffer from three diseases ; diarrhoea, rheuma-
tism and fever. The commonest cause of
diarrhoea is bad water ; its cure, complete rest,
and abstinence from every kind of food except
plain boiled rice. All ordinary diseases will
yield to this treatment in two and a half hours
or less. Rheumatism is usually brought on,
not by getting wet, but by remaining in wet
clothes. Hard drinkers are particularly liable
to bad attacks. To avoid rheumatism, wear
flannel and keep the digestion sound. Fevers
are generally caught after dark in the open air.
A man going out on night duty should never
go hungry and never stand still longer than
necessary. Good food and active exercise will
generally keep a man well unless the air is un
commonly deleterious. To cure a case of not
very severe fever, nothing seems so effi
cacious as as a change of air. It is said that
the removal of a patient only a few miles often
works an immediate improvement in his con
dition. In scouting along the edge of a swamp
at night, there is no danger so long as he par
ty keeps on the windward side of it. These
doctrines are laid down in the writings of army
surgeons and of physicians who have given
much attention to the subjects discussed, and
ought therefore to be trusworthy.
CAUOOS FOR STATE TREASURER.—The Republi
can and Democratic members of the two Houses
of the Legislature held their respective caucuses
last night at the Capitol, for the nomination of
candidates for State Treasurer, to be elected by
a joint convention of the two Houses next Mon
day.
The Republicans met hi the chamber of the
House of Representatives, and organized by
selecting Senator Penney as President, and Mr.
Smith, (Philadelphia,) of the Rouse, as Sec
retary.
After a brief interchange of sentiment, a
committee was appointed to confer with the
Union Republicans and Union Democrats, after
which the caucus adjourned until 1 o'clock A.
M., next Monday.
The Democratic members met at 74 o'clock,
in the East committee room.
Senator Mott was called to the chair, and
Messrs. Neiman and Duffield, of the House, of
ficiated as Secretaries.
The following is the result of the first and
only ballot :
Wm. V. M'Grath, of Philadelphia, had 31 votes.
A. G. Brodhead, of Carbon county, " 14 '6
H. L. Dieflenbach, of Clinton " " 4
Alex. Dixon, of Philadelphia, " 4 "
Mr. M'Grath having received the highest
number of votes cast, was declared duly nom
inated. His nomination was subsequently
made unanimous. The caucus then adjourned.
A DECIDED SELL—An individual calling him
self the original " Fakir of Ava " arrived in
our city a few days ago, and put out flaming
posters advertising an entertainment in the
" prestidigitatory " art at Brant's Hall last
evening, and by means of the "gift" game he
managed to secure an overflowing house. Each
of the audience, upon entering the hall, was
permitted to draw an envelope containing a
"chance" for one of the gifts advertized to be
distributed, including among other things a
"splendid horse valued at $100," a fine gold
watch, snits of clothes, a sewing machine and
barrels of flour. The performances, which Were
of a very indifferent character, having con
eluded, the " Fakir " informed the audience
that by presenting their envelopes at the
ticket office a portion of the gifts would be
distributed immediately, and the remainder at
the Hall this morning. Although this an
nouncement didn't exactly meet with the ap
proval of the audience still there was no outward
manifestation of displeasure, and as some few
of those who presented their envelopes were
the lucky recipients of various articles of cheap
jewelry, the majority of the audience were led
to believe that things were working on the
"square," and accordingly resolved to with
hold their envelopes. Thus matters remained
until this morning, when a large crowd of the
envelope holders congregated around Brant's
Hall anxiously awaiting the appearance of
the , Fakir. They waited an hour, then
another, and another, and still the Fakir
failed to show himself. At length the
crowd began to grow, testy and impatient,
and threats were made to seize on the magi
cian's "furniture," but this it was ascertained
had all been removed the night previous,
whereat the now excited crowd began to "sm ell
an exceedingly small mice," which animal be
came the more apparent when it was discovered
upon inquiry at his hotel that the distinguished
Fakir had ingloriously fled the city for parts
unknown, between "the sitting and the rising
of the sun," leaving behind him not only the
numerous unsatisfied "chances" for a "valuable
prize," but other little "reminders" in the
shape of unsettled hotel and store bills, all of
which we presume the holders will retain as
mementoes of the Fakir's "last trick"—his
sudden and mysterious disappearance.

AGREEABLY to the directions of an act of
the General Assembly of this Common
wealth, approved the ninth day of April, A. D.
1856, I hereby give notice that the Speakers of
the Senate and House of Representatives of
said Commonwealth, will receive proposals un
til the fourth Tuesday of January, being the
28th day of January, 1862, for doing the Pub
lic Printing and Binding for the term of three
years from the first day of July nest, at a cer
tain rate per centum below the rates specified
in the act relating to the Public Printing and
Binding, approved the ninth day of April, A. D.
1856, and according to the mode and manner
and conditions therein specified.
Said Proposals to specify the rate per centum
on the whole of the rates of said act taken to
gether, and not a specification of the rate per
centum below the rates on each item. The fol
lowing is the form of proposals for State Print
ing and binding :
"I propose to do all the State Print
ing and Binding in the manner and in all
respects subject to the provisions of the act
of the 9th of April, A. D. 1856, for the pe
riod of three years from the first day of
July next, at the rate of per centum
below the rates specified in said act, and
should the State Printing and Binding as
' aforesaid, be allotted to me, I will be ready
forthwith to give bond with sufficient sureties,
' for the faithful performance of the work so al
lotted," which said proposals shall be sealed
and endorsed, " Proposals for Public Printing
and Binding ;" and shall be directed to the said
Speakers, and be delivered to one or both of
them to be opened, announced and allotted, on
the 28th day of January, inst., agreeably to the
