CAMP MATHEWS, 1 o'clock A. IL, }
January 6, 1861
We have just received orders to march, and
whilst the men are preparing to "fall in," I
hastily drop you a few lines.
On Caristmas day the weather which had
previously been mild and pletsant, suddenly
changed, and since that tbo cold has been very
severe. No drills have taken place, and our
holidays have generally be• n spent in erecting
winter quarters, by bui ding, with logs and
mover, about four feet high, and securely
placing the tent upon the top, making a roomy
hbuse. Some have pip chased small stovi 8,
while others have built fi.e-places in them,
rendering them very comfortable. Yesterday
we completed outs, the 'a 'raptly, hut alas, are
not permitted to enjoy them. Half an hour
ago we received order to march, and will soon
be on oar way.
This evening information of a very impor
tant nature was brought in, and our whole
division are now under marching orders. I
I think we will go to Willirm-purt, about
twenty-five miles from out present li c ttiou.
Though the weather is very inclement and
cold—it having snowed an inch or two on Sa
turday, beginning again this evening, is uuw
four or five inches deep and still coming down
very fast, yet the wen seem unxiuus t.. see more
active service, even though coupled with hard
ships, and a commendable feeling of patriotism
pervade the whole regiment. We are, how
ever, illy prep ired for a forced march at ibis
time. Every body is completely "broke." On
Tuesday the paymaster should have made his
appearance, and our requisition for shoes end
clothing would have been 1111, d in a few dare.
Many of the men are now nearly barefooted,
very few have stockings worth wearing, and
some none at all. We will be unable to take
our tents, and how we will stand a march in the
snow, and to-morrow night will be spent,
should the tents not reach us, I will explain in
my next.
We will likely get into an engagement, and
if should be so fortunate, rest assured the 46th
will come out with flying colors. Promising to
write again in a few days, I remain, as ever a
