ROUGH SHOE YOUR Hoses.—Oue of the hack
horses running between the city and Camp
Curtin, experienced a severe fall last evening
by slipping on the ice near the reservoir, and
struggled painfully before he could regain his
feet. It, is cruel to drive a poor beast with
smooth shoes over glaring ice, and those who
have not sufficient humanity to rough shoe the
animals and Route them from falling, should
at least consult their own interests and prevent
injury to the creatures under their care.
Pomoe AFFAIRS --Several cases of drunken
ness and disorderly conduct, including one .for
keeping a bawdy house, was heard before the
Vapor:this morning_ One of the "drunks"
was committed for thirty days, one fined $l,
which he paid, some recommitted, and the
others discharged. The parties in the bawdy
house case gave bail to appear.
The consolidated police, also made several
arrests for drunkenness, all of whom were
beard before an Alderman and committed.
" IJr. wrru VIE FLAG." —ln the absence of any
regular celebration of the anniversary of the
battle of hew Orleans to-morrow, the day might
very properly be honored by a general display
of flags throughout the city. Such an arrange
ment would have a fine effect, and we hope our
citizens will heed the suggestion.

GONE TO GET HIS BOOTS MENDED] Many
items of interest occur in camp at Annapolis.
Recently a simultaneous laugh went forth
whilst one of the volunteers read aloud an ex
tract from his good mother's first letter received
since his arrival : "Shall we see you when
your boots are mended ?" The story is: He
was very desirous to join the Massachusetts
Twenty-fourth. His parents refusing, he man
aged to . etiliat with the understanding that he
should not be seen with the regiment till the
day of its departure. In the interim he ob_
tained a knowledge of tactics, manual, &c.,
sufficient to enable him to appear well in the
ranks. On the morning of the day that we
left Readville, he was spied by his mother
while leaving the house. She, suspecting his
desire, had watched him cloSely, and called—
" George, where are you going " "To have
my boots mended," was his reply. He says
that he "joined the regiment because the Gov
ernment wanted more men, and he would add
one to the number." May his p ttriotism and
eourage be measured - by his adroitness. He's
a good fellow. and possessing capabilities re
quisite for a good soldier, no doubt he'll prove
heroic."
THE TREMIHENT or Dtpraeara.—The Philadel
phia Ledger of yesterday has an article on Dip
theria, in which some very excellent and prac
tical advice is given relative to the treatment
of this disease. After describing the symptoms
of the disease, which are generally soreness of
the throat, followed by the appearance of a
white or sometimes yellowish coating matter
on the lungs inside, our cotemporary says: It
is well known that the best mode of treating
scarlet fever, measles, and even typhoid fever,
is to regard them as the effects of some poison
ous matter inhaled through the lungs and
carried perhaps, as the oxygen gas is carried
through the capillaries of that organ iato the
circulatory system. In scarlet fever and mea
sles the best treatment has therefore been
found not to bleed or reduce the system, but
rather to stimulate it so as to aid it to throw off
the surface the poison which in those cases
blossoms out on the skin and dies there. The
same sort of general treatment is found most
useful in diphtheria. If a child has an ordina
ry attack of sickness, or sore throat, a little
abstinence or opening medicine will generally
reduce it. But in a disease of this kind, on the
contrary, a generous diet and a gentle stimn
lating treatment seems, to strengthen nature
and throw off the disease. Whether diphtheria
is contagious or not has been doubted. In all
probability it is not. But it may and does be.
come epidemic in the atmosphere. Wherever
there is exposure to it, fresh, pure air is
one of the best preventatives and even
medicines both for the individual patient
and for the prevention of the spread of the
disease. A room well aired and lighted and
warmed, so freely as to allow of a constant
change, without draft, or any extreme of heat
or cold, will of itself do much in the way of
medicine. But there is no time to be lost in
the commencement of active treatment the
moment the disease shows itself. To cleanse
and keep clean , the thrOat, and prevent un
healthy and corrupt matter from forming or
accumulating there, is in itself a work of no
ordinary skill. Gargle for the throat, that will
stimulate the muccus membrane to healthy ac
tion, or cauterization, as needed, together with
the keeping up of the strength of the general
system, will require no little management and
promptitude.
it should be borne in mind that the proper
treatment of each case as it arises is of vast
importance, not only to the life and health of
the individual patient, but, in fact, of the whole
community. An hour of two of neglect by a
sleepy nurse, may render the case virulent in
itself and pestilent to a whole neighborhood
while careful nursing and scientific treatment
may and. ill modify the type which a diseas e
assumes, until it entirely dies away, or be
conies in time easily manageable by discreet
family nursing.
ALL should read Prof. Wood's advertisement
n another column.

Ix WAVES. —The meeting of the State Legis
lature was duly signalized to-day, by the custo
dian of the State bunting erevating the "Star
Spangled Banner" over the dome of the Capi
tol, from which it now gracefully waves—
" And its fame shall never die."
Limo was cheap enough in olden time.
Socrates was supposed to have lived upon an in
come of seventy-five dollars ; but he lived worse
than a slave. His coat was shabby, and he
wore the same garment winter and summer.
He went barefooted ; his chief food was bread
and water ; and as he engaged in no business to
mend his estate or income it is not wonderful
that his wife scolded.
IT is estimated that five thrusand turkeys, al
ready roasted, went down to the soldiers on the
Potomac, by Adams' Exprsass,. about Christmas
time, together with other etceteras necessary to
make them go down appetizingly. This shows
that the soldiers are not forgotten at home ;
and it also proves that whether the people of
the loyal States "mean business" or no, in
the present war they "talk turkey !" Many a .
poor fellow in this city and elsewhere, to whom
a turkey is a dim tradition of childhood, had
better been a soldier at about Christmas even
on the score of eatables.

PrITIOOAT NUISANCE. —A Bostonpaper says :
A day or two since, a gentleman, in passing
along Tremont Row, unintentionally stepped on
a lady's dress, which was trailing on the side
walk. The lady instantly turned, her eyes
flashing fire at the gentleman, and spitefully ex
claimed, "You impudent:puppy !" The gentle :
man very coolly replied, " Madam, if your
dress had not been on the sidewalk which is
made for the people to walk upon, I should not
have stepped upon it. I have no apology to
make, but I would advise you hereafter either
to shorten your dress a trifle or adopt some other
method to keep it off from the common foot
path."

CONCENTRATED CMORRN FOR SICK SOLDIERS.—
A lady who visited ninety-two regiments of
the Potomac army, on behalf of the "Ladies'
Aid," of Philadelphia, distributing with her
own hands clothing and eatables, states that
"concentrated chicken" has contributed to the
recovery of many typhoid patients, who were
apparently beyond medical aid, and recom
mends that quantities of it should be put up at
once, and forwarded to the hospitals. For the
benefit of those who wish to make it, we give
her directions : "Prepare the chicken as for
stewing ; put it into cold water, just enough to
keep from burning, and boil until the flesh can
be stripped from the bones ; to the flesh and
some water add salt and a little pepper, but no
butter, and let it simmer slowly for a long
time, or until reduced as much as possible.
Seal it up hot in cans." Mutton and beef can
be put up in the same way. -
KINDNESS TO ANIMALS. —The New York World
well remarks: "Gentleness, like charity, is
twice blessed—the effects of which on the ani
mals around the homestead are scarcely less
noticeable than upon the family of your house
hold. No man can be truly kind to the latter
without letting his cattle feel the influence
of his spirit. Soft words and kind looks
burn away wrath among cattle as among
mankind. Harshness has its curses in
the hatred which the "brute beasts" feel,
though they cannot utter their scorn, except in
occasional kicks or bites, and by general "ugli
ness," as it is sometimes called. An ear of
corn, or a little salt, or a bunch of hay, or even a
kind look or gentle action, such as patting your
horse, has influence more or less in making
your appearance always a source of pleasure to
the animals around you. It is cheap luxury,
this rendering even the brute beasts comfort
ably wound your homestead."

%mar lam Cm* lon. —During the last
week there were about forty cannons proved at
Phcenixville by an officer from the ordnance
departmentat Washington, and every one stood
the test. Not one out of the three hundred
made at the Phoenix works has proved faulty;
all bore the test to perfection. •
- The ordnance department at Washington ha s
pronounced Mr. Griffin's wrought iron cannons
the beet, handsomely finished and of great du
rability.
The Government has given the Phoenix Iron
company another order of 300 more to make
as soon as possible. Besides the heavy orders
for railroad iron, the company have also orders
for beams and girders for iron bridges, andiron
of various discriptions for navy yards for build
ing vessels, which causes business to be very
brisk at these works. The company have a
large number of hands employed—part of the
works run day and night with double sets of
hands.
