The reception at the White }knee is going on
with animation. - From 11 to 12 o'clock, the
Judges of the Supreme Court, while the For , :
eign Ministers in full court dress, and the Sena
tors and Representatives called on the Presi

The members of the Cabinet and Generals in
the army, with the naval officers also paid their
respects to the Chief Magistrate.
general McClellan, who is quite ill, was not
able to be out this morning.
During last night they e was an incessant firing
of Musketry, with discharges of artillery, on the
Virginia side of the river. NO little excitement
was caused, as the firing lasted two hours ; bat
this morning it is ascertained that the firing
was Merely the firing out of the old year by the
troops:
A vast concourse of people was present at the
President's Levee to-day. The members of the
Sniireme Court, Foreign Ministers, includ.ng
Lord Lyons and' Monsieur Yltrcer, with their
ladies. Officers of the army and navy headed
by Geri. ItteDowii.ll, and civilises in great•num
bers were preseut. Geis. McClellan being in
distiosvi did not attend.
The marine. band 'in attendance clisconnted
choice music.
Several of the Secretaries kept open houses in
this City.

Col. Rush'a regiment of lancers paraded the
Avenue today, presenting a brilliant appear
ance.

large size, and made of wool. The figailts upon
it. being of red, white and blue.
