The Procession of the Months
On lbw Year's Eve I sat down, and looked
Into the clear blank air wherein anon
I saw as moving visions, these—the Months
Bleak January, stern, and hard and cold, *
Inexorable vanguard of the year;
His brother following •close, with head bent
down,
And eyes avert, and lagging, painful tread•
Then March—the younger and lusty. In his
breath
Is life—full, daring, fetterless, and mild,
Eager and fatal as a thoughtless love.
Passionate April—Lgirt-child of the year
her heart out oe the klf of spring,
Until the May-time cometh, flowery fair,
And the earth smiles back the smile of heaven
June—throbbing, tremulous with corning joy,
Her rosebud pulses thrilling all the airs
And rich July, oppressed with empery,
Bathes in a flood of gold, and taketh. rest
By starlight, with low sighs and murmurings
August, queen, regnant, born unto the throne,
Holding her state with bland, assured content,
Gracious and regal-generous, large of heart.
September—gentle matron—with sweet eyes
And a low voice, that penetrates, persuades,
And looks of laie, and tender, guiding hands
October, with a calm and thoughtful brow, .
But quick decision is the look of him,
.And a great will that may not be gainaayed.
Sobbing Noveniber cometh, veiled in mist,
And weeps, lamenting o'er the faded earth
And then the last—December—takes its rack
submission, and contented to be old,
Grateful for unthought rays of happiness,
And ever mindful of the holy time
That cometh tolvards the end.
So they passed on.
The Months, in longprocession, glad to go
Unto the goal of all things—even to God.
Eruption of Vesuvius.
By the last news from Europe we learn that
Mount Vesuvius is again in eruption, end-anger
ing with its streams of lava the village of
Terro del Groco where many houses have al
ready been shaken from their foundation by the
earthquakes accompanying the eruplloh. Torre
del Greco is a flourishing town of 1.6:000 in
habitants, in the bay of Naples" at the foot of
Vesuvius to the westward. It is built upon the
lava cement thrown up by the volcietio in the
eruptionof 1681, by which two-thirdtkftilie vil
lage bearing its name was destroyed. It has since
swfeied repeatedly from the VOICBJ2O, being par
tially destroyed in 1737 and again in 1794.
in the latter year the molten lava advanced
upon the village in a broad stream, 12 to 40
feet in thickness, which passed through the
centre of the town enveloping the cathedral,
several churches and the greater part of the
houses and finally plunged 380 feet into the sea,
in a mass 1,204 feet wide and fifteen feet high.
Of the 18,000 persons then inhabiting the
town, all but 400 escaped injury, some of those
whose retreat had been cut off taking refuge
on the tope of the houses, and escaping the
next moining by walking over the hardened
ichface of the still moving lava. In spite of
the calamities from which the place has so re
peatedly suffered, its inhabitants remain sub
limely indifferent to earthquakes and eruptions,
refusing every proposition for a removal to a
less daugerous site, and as lon(ss the volcano
spares any of them, the town of Torre del Greco
will continue, doubtless, to be rebuilt upon the
ruins of each succeeeding catastrophe.
We have no particulars by which to judge of
the extent of the present eruption, and nave
heard nothing of the signs winch usually pre
cede such an event. Earthquakes are the ordi
nary precursors of the eruption, and for six
mouths precediug the great one of 1831, they
occurred at, frequent intervals. As the moue
taiu has been iu a sort seuituccive state fur
some yews back, it may be that extraordinary
symptoms forecasted its present violence. lu
March last the editor of the New York sea,
then in Europe, witnessed the movement of a
sluggish lava current which was slowly forcing
its way down the side of Vesuvius, and even
then the crater was growling and grumbling
more ominously than usual, sending out lis
daily showers of ashes with is spiteful violence
not characteristie of its more quiet moods.
During the present century Vesuvius has
burst into activity at intervals of three or four
years, with the exception of the longer periods
of six and seven years. Its last eruption
was in 1858 when no great damage was
done. It is now passed through its usual period
of rest, and is evidently ready fur work again
naoruption like that of 1798, would be a seri
ous matter for the villages that crowd its base.
Less than ten miles distant frour its crater, lies
leapies with over 400,001.Iinhabitants, the most
densely peopled city in Europe, and all its vi
cmity is so thickly peopled that within a length
of a dozen miles along the road at its base, over
which its lava currents have flown for the last
century, are villages containing a population of
at leasi. 7+5,090.
The Blockade and. Cotton.
In its "Talk op. 'Change" the Della of the
18th says:
There was some talk about the suggestion
and action of the Governor in regard to the ad
mission of cotton to-the extent of 10 per cent.,
or one-tenth of the crop, which, of course, em
braces Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas,
and Louisiana. it is the general impression
that the blck.kade of the mouths of the Missis
sippi can be avoided, particularly if a few Bri
tish steamers should happen Lobe in the vicinity
and it is not unreasonable to talk that 200,000
bales of cotton can be taken care of in our city
with great ease, that is, money can be realized
on that quantity. There are 20,000,000 of dol
lam now on deposit in the banks of this city.
One half of the amount can be available fur the
use of the cotton interest, but that sum will not
be required. Four millions and a half of dol
lars is the outside estimate that will be required
from our banks, which they will, we verily be
lieve, furnish. Of course it is taken into con
sideration that the cotton interest , of Louisian a ,
Mikis:4p/ and Arkansas is one and-the same.
There is no question hat whstthe requitlite
Ines= for the bent& of the cotton interest will
be realised.

Deq3ertions from the Rebel Army.
The Effect of General Pope's Rapid
Movements.
—..-._a
oarreivaza, Mo., Deo. Si
One of our men captured by the rebels near
Blinton and carried to Springfield, has just re
turned, having left that place on Christmas.—
lie says Price with 8,000 men bad taken all the
houses in Springfield for his troops, turning,wo
men and children into the streets. lie luel'un
loaded his wagons and was preparing for a long
stay.
The people of Arkansaarefased to allow Price
to enter that State with any other troops than
those regularly enlisted in the Confederate ser
vice,
and he had only 1,600 men enrolled in
that service.
The country north of gpringfleld was full of
men returning from Price's army, who said if
they were permitted to return home and take
the oath of allegiance, Price would be left with
only his regular confederate troops.
Since Gen. Pope's rapid operations last week
there is perfect quiet in all the region between
the Missouri and Osage rivers, not a rumor of
rebel camps or squads have been heard of.
