The Procession of the 'Months.
On New Year's Eve I sat down, and looked
Into the clear blank air wherein anon
I saw as moving visions; these—the Months
Bleak January, stern, and hard and cold,
Inexorable vanguard of the year ;
His brother following close, with head bent
down,
And eyes avert, and lagging, painful tread.
Then March—the younger and lusty. In his
breath
Is life—fall, daring, fetterless, and wild,
Eager and fatal ae a thoughtless love.
Passionate April—girt-child of the year—
Weeping her heart out on thel4kof 03PrOg i. ,
Until the May-time cometh:fliwery fair,
And the earth smiles back the: mile of hosyea.
June-throbbing,, tremulous h coming job
Her rosebud pulses thrilling all the air.
And rich July, oppressed with empery,
Bathes in a flood of gold, and taketh rest
By starlight, with low sighs and murmurings.
August, queen ' regnant, born unto the throne,
Holding her state with bland, assured content,
gracious and regal-generons, large of heart.
September—gentle matron—nwith sweet eyes
And a low voice that penetiates j persuades,
And looks of love, and tender, guiding hands
October, with a calm anclthoughtful brow,
But quick decision is the look of him
And a great will that may, not be gainsayed
Sobbing November (*meth; veiled in mist,
And weeps, lamenting o'er the faded earth
And then the last—December—takes its rank
Submission and contented 'to be old,
Grateful =thought rays of happiness,
Aud eyer, mindful of , the , holy time
That ccometh towards the end.
' So 'they passed on—

Eruption o€ -Vesuvius;
By the last news from Europe we'learn ' that`
Mount Vesuiles is again in eruption, endanger-'
ing . with its streams of hiVa the village of
Terro del Greco; where many houses have al
ready been shaken from their foundation by the
earthquakes B,o3oMpallyillg the eruption. • Torre
del Greco is a flourishing town of 15,000 in
habitants, in the bay of 'Naples, at the foot of
Vesuvius to the westward. It is built upon the
lawi. cement ,tbrown up .by the volcano in the
eruptionof 1631, by which two-thirds of the vil
lagebeitring its name was destroyed. It has since
suffered'repeatedly from the voletutio, being par
tially destroyed in 1737 sod again in 1794.
In the latter year the molten lava advanced
upon the , village in a broad stream, p) 40
feet in thiekness, which passed, through the
centre of the town enveloping the cathedral,
several churches and the greater , part of the
honsee and
_finally plunged 880 feet into the sea,
M a mass 1,204 feet wide and fifteen feet high.
Of' the 18,000 Perkins then inhabiting the
town, all brit 400 escaped injury, some of these
whose retreat had been cut off taking refuge
,on the , tops of the houses, and escaping the
nest morning by walking over the hardened
surface of the still moving laina. In spite of
the "calamities from which the place has so re
peatedly auffered, its inhabitants remain sub
limely indifferent to, earthquakes and eruptions,
refasing every proposition for a removal to a
less datigarens site; long as' the Volcano
spares an3r'ot them; theitowri'of Tone del Greco
will continue, doubtless, to be rebuilt:upon the
ruins of, each succeeeding,catastrephe.,
We have no particul , rs by which to judge of
the extent of the pre a nt ' eruption, and have
heard nothing of 'the gns which usually pre
cede such an event. , Ehrthquakes are the ordi
oary precursors of tOe .eruption, and for six
months priceding i thefreat one of 1831, they
t
occurred at frequent ' teilals: As the moun
tain has been in a sort pf 'semi-active state for
some years back,. it may be that extraordiumry
OrtaPtohis foreossted its preseet violence. In
March limit the ixiitOr of the New York , Sun,
then- in Ent.e.Pe, wjttiewied the Movement of n
sluggisl; lays current which was slowly forcing
its way. dowA the side of Vfmuyius, and even
then.the crater was, grow li ng and grumbling
more ominously than Anal, sending oat its
daily showers of, ashes Ilial. a Spiteful violence
not characteristic, of its, mnre, quiet moods.
During the present. century Vesuvius has
burst into activity at intervals of three or four
years, with the exceptibn`bf,the longer periods
of six and 'seven • yearS. 1 I ts last' eruption
was in 1868 when no great damage was
done. It is now passed through its usual period
of rest, and is evidently . ready .for work again.
An eruptirin like tluit of 179, would be a seri
ous raider for the Villages that crowd its base.
Less than ten miles distant from its crater, lies
Faides with over 400,000 Inhabitants, the most
densely peopled city in Europe, and all its vi
einita is se,ttdckly peopled, that within a length
of a dozen miles along the road, atits base, over
which its lava currents, have flown fox the last
Century, are vil/agea contairdng a population of
at least 70,000. - . •
